Drag a bookmark folder from the Safari bookmarks window to the Desktop. It becomes a Finder item. Delete the original. Drag the folder back into the Safari window. Delete the Finder item.
Thank u Linc for the response...seems like a lot of work... Have you heard of the free software that does this Called "sortosaurus"? Supposed automates without all the dragging back and forth? Your thoughts?
The procedure I suggested should take about ten seconds. I've heard of that software, but I've never used it.
Unbelievable! Excellent. After spending hours dragging the bookmarks around to alphabetize them, I found your response. Took 10 seconds as you promised. Brilliant!
Linc, when I try to drag the folder back to the Bookmarks window, it just pops back to the desktop. I can't get it to "stay" with the other Bookmarks folders. Any thoughts? I see others have no problem with this. I'm using OS-X 10.6.8, if that matters.
Expand the Bookmarks menu window so that there's empty space at the bottom, then drag the Desktop folder into that location. It should put a copy there. Finally, move it to wherever you want and delete the original if the new one meets your needs.
Thanks, balto. Unfortunately, my little macbook won't let me expand enough. I even deleted a couple folders to try to make space, but that didn't work (just fewer to scroll though, but it didn't create any blank space). The way my window looks is: History, Bookmarks Bar, Bookmarks Menu, Address Book, Bonjour (?), and All RSS Feeds (all under the heading Collections), then the separate heading Bookmarks. This is where I have all my folders that contain all my bookmarked sites. I have 27 folders.
While searching the forums for help on this issue, I saw an example where the user's folders were under his Bookmarks Menu. Maybe this is why he could do this, and I can't? Because mine are under Bookmarks instead?
I might be better off just doing all the alphabetizing manually😟
Select Bookmarks Menu or try dragging the sorted folder onto that collection. That's all I have to offer.
No go, thanks anyway!
It worked for me! Thank you!
This is what I have been looking for for over 2 years - thank you as this worked great and did only take about 10 seconds! I am so excited to have my Bookmarks alphabetized! Plus, when in folder mode you can delete the ones you don't want and rename ones that are named "sign in" - so cool! Thanks!
IT WORKED PERFECTLY!!! Thank you so much.
I had the same experience, but I could drag the alphabetized folder from the desktop into the Bookmarks bar at the top of the Bookmarks window. Then click on the bookmarks folder item in the folder list on the left side to itemize the bar contents in the main window. The alphabetized folder appears as a sub-folder that can be dragged into the folder list.
I was able to drag the bookmark folders and bookmarks to my desktop and organize it. But Safari will not allow me to drag it back into the Bookmarks Menu, I drag them over and they never stay in both the sidebar or in the screen where you click the edit button at the bottom of the side bar page. If anyone has an idea of how this works in Safari: 9.0.
Thank you,
Jay
