Yahoo mail won't push to my iphone and iPad

As of today, Yahoo mail won't push mail from my Yahoo account to either my iPad or my iPhone. I can open the mail app and manually refresh to get new mail, but mail won't push on it's own. I tried the basic trouble shooting steps of removing my Yahoo account from my iPhone and iPad and re-added and also turning push off and on, neither fixed the problem.

I wanted to see if it was a global problem so I created a dummy Yahoo account and added it to my iPhone and push worked for that account, so I know push is working. Now here's the weird part. When I added the dummy Yahoo account to my iPhone, push started working for my actual account. I repeated this with my iPad and it worked there as well.

Thinking things were fixed I removed the dummy Yahoo account and push stopped working on my real account. I added the dummy account back in and push started working for my real account. So basically I need to have a dummy Yahoo account on devices to get push mail to my real account. The opposite is not true, I can delete my real account and the dummy account will still get push mails. I tried leaving the dummy account on the phone, but turning mail off, but that too causes my mail account to stop receiving push notifications.

It looks like when a Yahoo account is added to an iOS device, a message is sent to Apple's push servers indicated the Yahoo email address that was added. Similarly when an account is removed a message is sent to indicate the email account was removed. That way Apple knows if any Yahoo Mail accounts are on the phone and if there aren't any it won't push. That or it can tell Yahoo that there are accounts on the phone that need push email.

At this point I don't know how to get things working without using my work around. I can tell the iPhone/iPad is sending info to Apple when I add my main Yahoo account to the device, but the push to check for new messages isn't coming in unless I add a different Yahoo account to the devices and turn mail on.

Anyone know how to fix this?

Push access for received email with an email account that supports push access is not done with Apple's push servers on an iOS device - except with an Apple iCloud account. That is done by the email account provider which in this case is Yahoo. Contact Yahoo in regards to a problem with push access with a Yahoo account.

I also started having this problem in the same timeframe. Have heard some theorize it could be a bug in 5.1.1, but I don't really know if the timing aligns and have not substantiated this. It would be nice to see someone from Apple make an official, researched statement on whether this is an Apple or Yahoo problem.

Glad to hear I am not the only one having this problem! I have been emailing Yahoo! Customer service for the past couple of days but they keep telling me to do the same thing ( turn push off- reset iPhone - turn push back on) or ( remove the account, reset my iPhone and add the account back). Nothing has worked!!! I have had this problem before, but Push started back working after a couple of days. I am so disappointed and frustrated! APPLE OR YAHOO! PLEASE HELP US!!!!!!!!

I am also having the same exact problem since I've updated to iOS 5.1.1. I am not 100% sure if it happened right after I've updated to the latest iOS, but it's approximately the time after I've updated my 4S. I got my Yahoo mails being pushed to my devices about twice a day, it's more like fetching rather than pushing. Push emails are very important to me, and I'm so frustrated now. I hope Apple could figure the problem out and solve it a.s.a.p.. By the way, I think this problem is global, I'm from Malaysia.

I am in Australia and I notice this problem before I upgraded to 5.1.1. Now sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. I have changed the settings to fetch every 15 minutes and this works at times. I found out that before I changed the settings to fetch every 15 minutes it was on manual but it was working when the problem has not started yet. Now manual doesn't do the job and only if it is set to fetch every 15 minutes. Also my problem is not just with Yahoo mail but also with my ISP provided email address. So I guess it can't just be a problem on Yahoo's end. I also set the Yahoo mail to fetch and it at times does pushes the mail rather than simply fetches. I don't know what's going on.

The following accounts/account type support push access.

Yahoo

Apple iCloud

Exchange

Does your ISP support accessing the account as an Exchange account or as an IMAP account that supports push access?

If not, push access does not apply to the account - Fetch only.

Well now I noticed since this problem started my emails to my ISP email address gets pushed as well but only sometimes. In the settings there is no option to tick "push" for this ISP email address. Only the option for "fetch" and "manual" so this is odd. It never pushed any emails from this email address before this whole problem started. BTW does "push" means pushing the email notifications to the lock screen? That is my understanding of what "push" means because that is what it does to my Yahoo emails and ISP provided emails now but only when "it feels like it" meaning sometimes it does it sometimes it doesn't.

Your ISP email account does not support push access as already provided. If the account supported push access, there would be a setting available to turn push access on/off for the account.

No, that is not what push access means.

Push access means when a new emal is received at the incoming mail server for the account, the incoming mail server pushes the email out without the email client used to access the account having to automatically or manually check the account for new messages, which is fetch. Your ISP email account does not support push. More than likely the account is an antiquated POP account.

This is a Yahoo problem, which is not true push access anyway - pseudo push access.

So if that is the real meaning of push then for all practical purposes on the phone's operation for the phone user's convenience there is no difference between push and fetch as bot will mean that when incoming emails arrived either push or fetch will allow the email to be notified on the lock screen. Is this correct? The push and fetch difference only operates on tyhe technical side that doesn't apply to how the emails are managed on the phone allowing the phone user any less function whilst using the phone. Push and fetch are just technical jargons then.
