Yahoo mail won't push to my iphone and iPad

As of today, Yahoo mail won't push mail from my Yahoo account to either my iPad or my iPhone. I can open the mail app and manually refresh to get new mail, but mail won't push on it's own. I tried the basic trouble shooting steps of removing my Yahoo account from my iPhone and iPad and re-added and also turning push off and on, neither fixed the problem.

I wanted to see if it was a global problem so I created a dummy Yahoo account and added it to my iPhone and push worked for that account, so I know push is working. Now here's the weird part. When I added the dummy Yahoo account to my iPhone, push started working for my actual account. I repeated this with my iPad and it worked there as well.

Thinking things were fixed I removed the dummy Yahoo account and push stopped working on my real account. I added the dummy account back in and push started working for my real account. So basically I need to have a dummy Yahoo account on devices to get push mail to my real account. The opposite is not true, I can delete my real account and the dummy account will still get push mails. I tried leaving the dummy account on the phone, but turning mail off, but that too causes my mail account to stop receiving push notifications.

It looks like when a Yahoo account is added to an iOS device, a message is sent to Apple's push servers indicated the Yahoo email address that was added. Similarly when an account is removed a message is sent to indicate the email account was removed. That way Apple knows if any Yahoo Mail accounts are on the phone and if there aren't any it won't push. That or it can tell Yahoo that there are accounts on the phone that need push email.

At this point I don't know how to get things working without using my work around. I can tell the iPhone/iPad is sending info to Apple when I add my main Yahoo account to the device, but the push to check for new messages isn't coming in unless I add a different Yahoo account to the devices and turn mail on.

Anyone know how to fix this?

The following accounts/account type support push access.

Does your ISP support accessing the account as an Exchange account or as an IMAP account that supports push access?

If not, push access does not apply to the account - Fetch only.

Well now I noticed since this problem started my emails to my ISP email address gets pushed as well but only sometimes. In the settings there is no option to tick "push" for this ISP email address. Only the option for "fetch" and "manual" so this is odd. It never pushed any emails from this email address before this whole problem started. BTW does "push" means pushing the email notifications to the lock screen? That is my understanding of what "push" means because that is what it does to my Yahoo emails and ISP provided emails now but only when "it feels like it" meaning sometimes it does it sometimes it doesn't.

Your ISP email account does not support push access as already provided. If the account supported push access, there would be a setting available to turn push access on/off for the account.

No, that is not what push access means.

Push access means when a new emal is received at the incoming mail server for the account, the incoming mail server pushes the email out without the email client used to access the account having to automatically or manually check the account for new messages, which is fetch. Your ISP email account does not support push. More than likely the account is an antiquated POP account.

This is a Yahoo problem, which is not true push access anyway - pseudo push access.

So if that is the real meaning of push then for all practical purposes on the phone's operation for the phone user's convenience there is no difference between push and fetch as bot will mean that when incoming emails arrived either push or fetch will allow the email to be notified on the lock screen. Is this correct? The push and fetch difference only operates on tyhe technical side that doesn't apply to how the emails are managed on the phone allowing the phone user any less function whilst using the phone. Push and fetch are just technical jargons then.

+1 for having the exact same issue with Push mail on Yahoo. I've no idea whether the problem lies with Apple or Yahoo though, could be conincidental that the issue might have started to occur around the time of the iOS 5.1.1 update.

I don't fully understand how push mail actually works, but from my observations, it seems to me as if the phone believes Push mail is available and working correctly. My reasoning behind this is the statement in iPhone settings that the fetch schedule is used when push is off or unsupported. My assumption was that if Push was not working for some reason, the phone would revert to using the fetch schedule for that account instead??? I've found however, that my phone was only displaying emails if I opened the Mail app manually, only then would it download any new mails, clearly indicating that the fetch schedule was not being used. This made me think that as for as the software on the phone was concerned, a push connection was established for the account(don't know if a constant or intermittant connection to a push server is required, as I say, not sure how it works).

Anyway, in order to get my mails to appear in notification centre, I have had to delve into the settings further into the Advanced section within Mail settings and "Fetch New Data" to set my Yahoo account to "Fetch" whilst leaving iCloud set to "push". iCloud notifications still work fine then, and at least I get my emails from Yahoo on a fairly regular basis.

Even a kid and an imbecile can say "wrong" but can they give reasons backing why they say "wrong"? LOL Well on my phone the phone behaves exactly the same to me when I either set the mail settings of both email accounts to "push" or "fetch". It delivers mail automatically to my account without me needing to update the account manually and sends the email notifications to my locked screen. I have set my email settings to both "push" or "fetch" and that's what the phone does.

Not answered if you read my second post which asks about the PRACTICAL difference to the phone user in terms of how the phone treats the emails in the way the phone operates vis a vis the user. And in asking that question I have provided the fact how my phone and my email accounts behaves just the same if they were set to fetch or push. There is nothing that contradicts this fact yet so far. And there must be a few mental midgets here. LOL

I think it must be a Texas thing. Do you know the idiot son of Saddam Hussein? It is Saddam W. Hussein. Maybe I am dealing with Allan W. Sampson? LOL

I'll give you a practical example:

I am working with a number of people on a grant project. After a meeting today emails were being sent that I needed to immediatly see and respond to. So let's say this exchange is with Patsy, Chris and I. Chris sends and email to Patsy and I. I respond with a question that I need the answer to ASAP. Now if I have Push mail (I do with an iCloud account) as soon as Chris responds and it goes through the chaotic internet email system it will alert me (vibrate in this case and show 1 additional email on the badge, plus I have notificiations on and can see the header of the email.

If I was set to Fetch every 15 minutes and Chris send her response one minute after my iPhone had tried to fetch new mail then I would have to wait 14 minutes until I saw her response. Or I could open the mail every minute or so which would cause it to manually fetch until I hit upon the time that here email came back.

Push is far more convenient and in this case crucial to me.

That was very good. Clear as crystal now. You obviously understood what I was seeking from my post unlike Dubya. LOL Thanks for your clarification and your superior explanation skills. One less mental midget in the world is a good thing. 😉 On the other hand you just demonstrated an old saying: "no such thing as bad students, just bad teachers!". Great stuff!

No it doesn't have to be a problem with the firmware or push access for any email account that supports push access for received email wouldn't work either, which is not the case.

Yahoo has had ongoing problems with this since day one with the original iPhone and iOS 1.0 beginning 5 years ago. Yahoo doesn't support true push access for received email anyway - it is psuedo push access with iOS devices, which Yahoo does not support when accessing the account with an email client on your computer. Don't believe Yahoo supports IMAP account access with an email client on a computer as they do with the iOS Mail app.
