I just bought my apple TV. I have set my home sharing to every possible device I have. I am getting NO WHERE. Nothing shows up under my computers on my apple tv. I have checked my router- they are all connected to the same network. I have also tried the remote app... NOT WORKING. I have tried to use airplay.. NOT WORKING. There is no icon for airplay... and absolutely nothing is showing up under computers on my apple TV. Someone PLEASE help!!!! 😐

I am having a similar problem. I have 2 apple tv's one has no problem connecting to home sharing but the other one times out and says cannot connect to my library. Have reset everything to no avail. Obviously it is not a firewall or similar problem as 1 apple tv works but not the other.
I don't know if you are having the same problem I was but the way I solve my problem was to reconfigure the router. I searched high and low and wasn't able to find the solution on the Apple forum but my husband found the answer on the Dlink forums.
Once we reconfigured the router to support multicasting, everything worked as it should.
@RobWoodman I experienced the following: MacBook connected to ATV aok, Homesharing operational and content successfully streaming to ATV. iTunes Library visible on ATV and music from the visible library could be played and driven either by the Remote or using iPad RemoteApp. It was also possible to connect the iPad to the ATV and stream content successfully from the iPad to ATV.
The impossibility was using AirPlay from the MacBook to ATV. The icon appeared in iTunes but when clicked just timed-out. Frustrating.
Solution? After using the Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.app and running the First Aid options of Verify and Repair Disk Permissions on the MacBook HDD, iTunes was then re-started. Clicked the AirPlay icon to connect and voila, working again. Within the logs it seems AirPort Utility required a number of permission repairs. Could be the source of the AirPlay problem?
No go on the home sharing no matter what i did. was still under warranty. shop tried to make it work but to no avail. new one sent to me by apple works perfectly. So even though the network connection worked, i could view youtube etc, home sharing would not work. Thanks to apple (took less than 3 days from when i dropped it off till new appletv arrived). And Ozmac in Adelaide Australia gave me excellent support/service.

I am storing my iTunes lib on a Drobo which is connected via FW to my Mac Pro - from there it should be accessable via Home Sharing. Unfortunately either my (Apple Extreme) Network or the Apple TV's (or...?) are slowing down the stream to an extent where watching a video becomes impossible.
1. For some reason (other than verifying one's ID) Home Sharing requires to stay connected to the internet...
2. Both Apple TV's have to be restarted quite often (showing Home Sharing on but no library available)
3. the Apple Network throughtputs are below the possibilities of Airport Extreme Stations (between a couple and 400 KB/s; peak 1.3 MB).
I am not sure what is causing the delay of the data stream - it just doesn't work...(most of the time)
Does Apple require Bonjour to be running on the PC inorder to home share with the Apple TV?
