I have read every post and tried everything suggested and still no summary button around??? Probably iTunes is just not compatible with Windows... I have had problems over the years so does not surprise me.

iTunes works perfectly with Windows. If you don't see the Summary screen you are not connected with your iPhone. The instructions have been posted several times, but here goes again.
In the newest iTunes screen on PC there's no Summary Tab when you click on the device. However I found it by clicking on a tiny iPhone icon in the upper left corner of the screen. It's below the main toolbar with "File" and "View". Good luck.
BTW I can't believe some folks took the time to reply to this with a troll response.
I clicked "view sidebar" and there is nothing of what you are mentioning. There is no summary tab, no device tab. Not even a tab to choose which device I am using. (iPad)
Its not working for me. I have been wrestling with this for an hour and no luck. Isnt there another way? or am I stuck with what I got and cannot restore since I am locked out?
I'M here 14 months latter and looking for that elusive "Summary tab" and no one knows. This is sad!
Here's how I got to Summary in iTunes on the Mac
Open iTunes.
Go to the Store icon in the menu.
Click on it.
You will be in the iTunes store.
In the iTunes store window, next to three dots (...) you should see a an icon which is the Device icon, though it doesn't say so .
Clicking on it will let you select your attached device.
When you do, you should be taken back to the iTunes window where you will see the Summary option at the top of the sidebar.
I hope this works for you. Like many of the posters here I could not get Summary to appear by following the various suggestions given. I found it by flailing, a technique that often works for me when Apples sometimes arcane advice doesn't.
Open iTunes on computer. Connect iPhone to computer. In left column of iTunes halfway down, DEVICES, click iPhone name. The Summary Tab, will now appear near top of iTunes. Just click on the Summary Tab button.
After plugging in your device you may need to click on left half of the button along the top menu bar that simply is a rectangle with the name of the type of device you have plugged in and an eject symbol. Once you click on the left side of this button it will bring you to the screen with the summary "button" or tab that is easily visible and you should have no problem finding it.
Here we see what my iTunes 12.3.0.44 looks like when I open it in OS10.11
When I plug in my iPhone6+, I get the automatic Photos app. I have to launch iTunes manually.
Here is what it looks like when I open it with my phone connected.
When I click on the little image of a phone to the right of the three dots, here is what I get:
There is the elusive 'Summary' tab.
And at this point it is well to do the things we find helpful to manage our phone or iPad, such as backing up and synching, etc.
For three years now, iTunes' process to get to this point has changed due to updates. (Evidenced by the fact that Mr. Finch's image of iTunes doesn't look like mine.) Therefore the changing recipe to get to this point has been the thorn in the sides of folks who have sought answers here.
Hope this helps.
In the 4 years since the post you responded to there have been a lot of changes in iTunes. To see the Summary screen in the current version connect the phone, then click on the phone icon in the top bar and select your iPhone if there is more than one device listed.
You will see the summary screen on the right, and the word "Summary" highlighted on the left sidebar.
I am having the same problem. I can see my phone icon but clicking on it doesn't do anything. When you replied that disabling Javascript in the browser settings solved the problem that doesn't exactly make sense to me? Disabling the Javascript in one of the various web browsers installed on my computer has some effect on an icon for an iPhone in iTunes?
how do i do this on the newest itunes? i am having major problems figuring this out !!! thx
It IS sad! Hundreds of millions of people have found it. A few can't follow the directions that have been posted, and can't read the manual, and can't use the online help. That is very sad.
