In the newest iTunes screen on PC there's no Summary Tab when you click on the device. However I found it by clicking on a tiny iPhone icon in the upper left corner of the screen. It's below the main toolbar with "File" and "View". Good luck.
BTW I can't believe some folks took the time to reply to this with a troll response.
how do i do this on the newest itunes? i am having major problems figuring this out !!! thx
It IS sad! Hundreds of millions of people have found it. A few can't follow the directions that have been posted, and can't read the manual, and can't use the online help. That is very sad.
The new itunes has a mysterious button that has not been mentioned. In order to get to the summary tab one must first click on THE LEFT SIDE of a little rectangular button labelled "iPhone (eject)". It might say iPad if you are using an ipad. This button is located along the horizontal menu bar in the new itunes. Once you click on the part of this button that is not the eject symbol you will find the mysteriously contained window where the settings and summary button are obvious.

For three years now, iTunes' process to get to this point has changed due to updates. (Evidenced by the fact that Mr. Finch's image of iTunes doesn't look like mine.)
It does look like yours.
He has whited out a few things and added a few items (by click the ellipses and editing).
You get there the same way.

Thanks, Chris. I see that Mr. Finch has changed his iTunes. I see that he has only shown the top. I agree that his instruction is correct as of now.
However, if the default opening status is Movies, then a sidebar is present with the attached iOS device listed under devices. Clicking on this device name does not open the device's Summary sidebar. That sidebar is only activated by clicking on the icon as Mr. Finch directs. So, again, as of now with current updates of both iTunes and iOS, the answer to the original question is here.
During the over three year history of this thread, in 18 replies, 5 people have posted that they need an answer, 113 have clicked 'I have the same problem', and 42,270 views. And during this time, there has been:
Direction to click on 'view' and 'show sidebar'.
Direction to click on the device name under 'devices'
Suggestion about going to the store and back
So my message to the four experts listed above is:
I realize there are 113 out of hundreds of millions who just don't get it when there is no sidebar with our devices shown.
You can always demean us newbies and feel good about it.

I have the same problem with iPhone 6+ since Sept. I'm using Vista, Itunes 12.1.3.6. Had to remove all videos synched using Sycn Photos in summary page. I did this by scanning the folders I was synching and removing all *.M files. I resynched and Summary screen came back. By the way, without the summary screen and clicking on the phone icon in the upper bar puts itunes in an endless loop for me using above 50% of my processor times forever.
Hope this helps.
Bill, I have to agree with you 100%. Its the New Apple or AppleSoft as I prefer to refer to them now. I have been using Apple products in business and at home for the last 15 years, so I don't consider myself a Newbie. I too have problems in using online help as updates and configurations are constantly changing. Had it not been for your post I might still be looking for summary. THANKS. I have a 6sPlus and have had major issues with it the last month. Apple phone suggests, RESTORE. I am not willing to restore my phone every week to keep it working. I love Apple products but see them slipping away from what was once"It Just Works". Now it just works if you want to spend the time restoring your phone. I search the web and see countless issues with my phone. Some problems have work arounds usually posted by consumers not online tech support. I'm pretty sick of this whole Apple issue. Seems to me Apple is much more concerned with slapping out new products, let the real world test it then hopefully have most problems resolved with updates just about the time they release a new phone and OS. Then we get to go through the same thing again.
I'm one of the crazy people who upgrade every year. Making money is there primary concern now, not making products that "Just Work".
As for arrogant online tech support people you just have to look the other way. It makes them feel special I guess.
I will say Apple phone support has always been excellent, but they have a script to go by. Try getting your phone replaced and you will see what I mean
THANKS APPLESOFT

Do you have a technical support question we, your fellow users can help with?
Hello, Jerry.
I had supper with my wife, son, and grandson yesterday. We had an iPhone6+, an iPhone 6, an iPhone 5s, and an iPhone 4s. Our other son, his wife, and other grandson all have iPhone 6's. At supper yesterday, we had some of the discussion you reference above. Apple has evolved. Many things are very good, but the attention and time required to appreciate the good things about Apple devices has grown significantly. The folks in South Korea along with Google are offering some very capable alternatives. I don't have any of those products and don't have the time to adulterate my mind processes at this stage in my life.
I'm comfortable with my iPhone, iPad, Mac, but the price for all is more than $$. It is the precious commodity of time this late in my life.
To Meg's question about a 'technical support question', I do have one. I have given up on sharing text, notes, contacts and calendar content over 3 iOS devices with Much lost information, so here is my question: How do I separate these devices and not have duplicated posts and lost information?
Apple Care + (which I have on ALL my devices) is very helpful, but each one has me on the phone for hours and the end result is a different jumble of performances by our devices. Always loosing some information which sometimes is recoverable, but often some that never shows up again.
That's my rant for this morning.
Good morning to the rest of us!

You probably want to start your own thread with a properly descriptive subject line as it sounds as if your question is quite different than the original question. When you do, explain what you're trying to do, what you've done so far, what has happened and what troubleshooting steps you've already taken. Make sure to explain how many people are involved. Are all three devices yours? Or are you trying to share data with different people.
Continuing to post in this thread will mean a lot of people who are very knowledgeable about this are not going to see your question. It's not really my area of expertise.
Best of luck.
Thank you, Meg.
You are correct that the question I posed is unrelated to the subject of this thread. - - - "Using a high pressure music cyberstore to manage an iOS device"
I've submitted new questions without respectful responses.
We humans usually respond to and repeat interactions that are respectful. Mr. Anderson's response was one of those rare ones.
Thank you Ron - I can assure those of you who were more than a little dismissive of some of the posts asking for help on this topic that the summary tab is not easy to find on a mac even for those who have used computers for many years. I spent an age today trying to find out how to delete films from my iPad in order to make space for new films, the facility to do so is NOT available automatically on the screen when the machines are linked, however thanks to Ron, after much searching I located it in the iTunes store icon (which in my view is a bizarre place to hide it even for Apple).
The summary screen is not there. What IS there is LIBRARY and DEVICES. Under Library is "recently Added, Artists, etc.
Under Devices is "xxx's iPhone, followed by Music. There is no Summary and no Apps.
This worked. I had to uninstall Java and reinstall it, but after doing that, it worked. Thank you for that - really!
Now, I went to sync the songs I wanted, which appear on my computer, but they were not listed as choices in the sync list. If they were purchased from a different Apple ID (which is possible because I have two) will they not be able to sync even if I have purchased Apple Match? Thx
Hi Visalian,
I just connected my iPhone 6+ and after closing Photos, I had to find iTunes to open. It showed me an iOS (phone) icon. I clicked on it and it gave me the summary page, just like it's supposed to.
Upon browsing in my iTunes, I found some music and played a couple songs. Now, I have the same screen you do. Possibly, your Mac iTunes goes directly there and bypasses the opening screen I got. Now that i've gotten into music, I don't see a way to get back. But after some more thinking, I went back to the iOS device icon in the very top and clicked. There came back the Summary tab. Somehow, we've got to have that super human knowledge to get back.
As to the Javascript in a browser.... I don't see a straight reason for a browser setting to impact your local connection and management of your phone or other iOS device. Here's my surmising, not a real knowledgeable explanation. Since iTunes is a huge commercial enterprise, it needs to connect your device to the 'store' for them to sell you something. Therefore, a browser setting for that phishing process may impact your devices's connection.
Good luck!
