Greyed-out songs problem

First off, I'd like to start by saying that I'm sorry if I there are other threads that already talked about this. I tried googling for solutions, but I could not find any one article that could help my current problem.

After downloading my songs onto my iTunes, I tried to sync the songs to my iPhone. That's when the "Greyed-out" songs started showing up. In the Library itself, the songs are normal, playable. But under "Devices" -> Music, the songs appear "greyed-out" with a circle being created with two arrows that do not move. Furtherrmore, the "grey-out" song(s) does not sync to my iPhone. Below is a picture of the problem.

Again, the song is plays perfectly fine in the Library. However, it will not play under the Devices -> Music category nor will it appear on my iPhone. Please help me. I am tired of this problem and would like a quick solution. If there was a thread with the exact same problem, please post the link to said thread IF there is a solution. It is much appreciated.

I already tried one of the solutions that worked one time but doesn't seem to work now. The solution involved logging out of one's Apple account then logging back in. As I said, this one doesn't seem to work for me anymore. Any help and input is appreciated. Thanks.

OK, so I think my issue had something to do with the way iTunes imported the files. First I deleted all the songs off of my phone (iTunes --> device --> music --> don't sync). Then I deleted my iTunes library (I know...but I'm at that point...). I re-imported about 250 songs, including several of the albums that were grayed out before. When I synced, they loaded to my iPhone fine. Still not sure of root cause, but at least now I can listen to my new music on my iPhone.

Had this issue and am up to the wee hours with it. Somehow I had erased all the music on my iPod Touch... so I was trying to sync it all back... not so fast... hmmm it appeared to sync and then I had the greyed out songs problem. I thought the sync had stopped. But when I looked closely at the iTunes window of my iPod's music library... the tiny sync arrows were frozen in the left hand side of each line of each song. Apparently this was too much to synch WIRELESSLY. As soon as I plugged my iPod into the Mac w/USB cord and once again hit the sync button on iTunes... it started happening... the songs appear to be downloading and the greyed out names seem to be turning black. It did crash in the middle of this. Then I started it again. It's just a big overload of stuff.

Forgive me if this is a repeat... I skimmed the thread and I'm exhausted.

I had the same problem of greyed out music on iPhone 4 running iOS5. After trying many of the recommended solutions, I did the following

Connect to iTunes

Select restore

Select the option to set it up as a new phone instead of restoring from back up

Go through the set up process

Sync

OK, this means all Apps that were in folders needed to be arranged again, but all the music synced immediately. Way I see it is a little bit of pain for a huge gain - I HAVE MUSIC AGAIN!!

Thank you, Jacob, for the great tip! I was ready to trash everything after three days of trying everything. I went to my iPhone music in iTunes; deleted one song just to see if it would work and immediately all the greyed out songs were retransferred and blackened. This community discussion is well worth it.

Now if someone can tell me how to configure my Acer laptop windows to get a valid internet connection to the iTunes Store.

I had the same issue and I tried all of these suggestions (with no luck) except deleting all the greyed out songs. I had over 600 songs greyed out songs and didn't want to spend all day deleting them. Then I tried something VERY simple and it worked. I went to my first grey out song in my play list which happend to be "Addicted to Love" by Robert Palmer (yeah I know.... not sure why I have that song on there).... anyway, while my iphone was connected I clicked on my iphone, then music, then where it lists the artists I manually checked the box next to Robert Palmer; I then re-synced and whalla.... all 600+ grey songs synced.

Hope this will work for you too, as it will save you from a giant head ache of deleting every greyed song!

hi there, I actually had this problem a while ago, i guess if technical representatives from apple cant help us, let's utilized things we know, I have an ipad 2 and downloaded songs from my itunes in my office computer, then right now, I tried to copy some songs from my home desktop and eventually noticed that after the process of copying files, i had this greyed-out music in my ipad, i was like freaking out and searched for solutions for it, then i googled my problem and possible solutions but i was disappointed cause i dont get any help...

the first thing i did was to open up my itunes at home

then, try to locate those songs which is greyed out

after locating it, i deleted those songs from my music one by one, on my device using my desktop so i actually delete it manually using itunes

2nd i tried to delete playlist that i made which i found out not so useful at all..( its my opinion only)

3rd i had to arranged my songs in my ipad by artist

then Wallah....my problems solved

Hi I am sorry if this reply is so late, however I to am having this exact problem and every website I have looked on has no help what so ever. I dont think anyone really has the answer as apple seem to be stuggling with this problem to so I am hopeing maybe there will be a small update for the iphones / ipods ect and itunes to fix this issues. If not I will be making an hour and a halfs worth of journey to speak to an assistant in the apple store as all I have had from having my iphone is trouble and I really did expect more and to be quite frank would not recomend it to anyone at this moment in time.

However I do wonder if you could help me with another of my querys...

I do not seem to be able to drag and drop music from my itunes libary to my music (the section under device) do ou have any suggestions?

Thankyou from another confused itunes/iphone user.

I've literally tried about every single one of these suggestions and nothing has worked. I have a mac and when I try to delete the greyed out songs from the music tab under my device, they don't delete. Also, I tried restoring my ipod on the phone with a customer service man from apple. No dice. I tried re-downloading the songs, didn't work. I can't figure it out if anybody has any suggestions to help me out, they would be much appreciated. Thank You!

Another possible solution.

I had the same problem, no music, no books, no apps - basically a pretty useless iPad. Tried all the suggestions on the community - restore, change iPad name, synced and resynced.

Just now I've re installed iTunes (10.7) on my MBA and now resynced and my iPad is back up and running.

Given the number of posts on this on several streams it is very surprising that Apple have not done anything yet, has Apple lost it's way on the user experience ?

I was considering a new 7" iPad just for music and books but this has made me rethink - Android and Kindle might be a better option.

I had same problem and took half a day to figure it out... I tried everything i could think or read here and nothing worked. So i decide to restore my iPhone 4S and configure it as a new one. But before, i did some copy/paste of my photos/video folders from Windows Explorer then i've select all then tried to delete it from windows explorer..after few deleted i got a message saying that the device wasnt responding or was unpluged. But wasnt.

some files was not deletable. And in my iPhone the pictures wasnt there too but files was listed in windows explorer....

So, i did a Photos sync but choosing the Windows Sample folder only. It wiped out all my photos folder and did new one, then all my songs were synced again and all is back and playable.

I suggest, look if you have photos, videos, apps that isnt working or not deletable.. then wipe it out by an iTunes sync (unselecting sync those things or sync completely different apps or folder)

It worked for me... Hope you get it fixed too.
