Nightmare with a Samsung Wifi printer 2165W

Hello,

I've just bought a Samsung 2165W "wifi" printer. I've spent the last five hours trying to configure it to my wireless network. The problem appears to be not my technical ineptitude, but the fact that the instructions provided, the programs on the installation CD and the support section of the Samsung website do not tally with the reality of using a computer (I'm on a MacBook pro, running OSX 10.7.4).

I have followed the installation instruction to the letter. The printer works when connected via USB; but there is absolutely no way I can connect the computer to my wifi network (I don't have a screen on my printer that would allow me to select my network, the Samsung software does seen to want to give me that option either).

I got very excited when I noticed that there was a recently-launched piece of software on the Samsung support site called 'Wireless setting'. It does absolutely nothing apart from raise my blood pressure.

Does anyone have any experience of this before I through the printer out of the window?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.4)

I had the same problem, and I eventually fixed it. I installed the printer like they said with the usb cable etc, but in the connectivity section of the installation there was an advanced tab, I entered my WIFI details, WEP Key etc...

Once it was installed the printer would not connect up... So in the printer settings I removed the Samsung printer then re-added it manually... It then came online for about a minute just at random intervals. During one of the online phases I took the IP address down from the Samsung Printer Manager Utility...

I then reinstalled the printer a third time, but from the IP address only... Since then it has worked like a charm...

I think the printer itself is great as a cheap compact high quality printer... But the software is ridiculous! It is clearly not MAC compatible from the offset and you must use OS X to manually set it up...

Samsung need to get it together, because this printer very nearly went through the window!

I have attached a couple of screen shots to hopefully help...

Yeah, these instructions are good.

I also updated a printer firmware and it doesn't jam anymore. (http://www.samsung.com/us/support/owners/product/ML-2165W/XAA Manuals&Downloads, firmware) In order to do that by Macbook, I needed to install VirtualBox with Windows 7, since firmware update program is Windows only. After trying out around 6 times it finally worked out.

If you run out of paper, you need to open and close the tray before it resumes printing.

"One-Touch Wireless Setup"

Right... 6 hours of struggling. By profession I am a computer engineer.

I have the same issue and spent those 5 frustrating hours + with you as well.

Samsung needs to get their s**t together. Their CS is horrible and the tech support is very unknowledgeable with the exception of one person I spoke to 6 months back regarding a different issue.

I'm sending mine back as well and don't have the box as I threw it out right away. They better give me 100% refund.

Additionally I sent in a comment on Samsung's blog and specified everything and they sent me the following link:

If you notice the ML-2165W is NOT on this list. What a bunch of losers!

PS - I have the Samsung CLP-325W and works perfectly.

There must be a lot of people with lost Samsung hours that they'll never get back. Lost to the black hole of time.

I opted for an HP 1102w which, so far at least, has worked well. It was also a nightmare to setup on the wireless network; I succeeded by configuring it via my girlfriend's MacBook, which is running OSX 10.5. That did the trick.

Good luck.

I too was about to throw this printer off the balcony but then turned to youtube to see if anyone else was in our boat. I found a short video of someone hooking upi the printer on a PC. While I knew it would be different, I did learn one important thing... If you followed the set up instructions, it installed a manager software on your mac. You have to open that software while the printer is connected by USB and turn on the wifi settings on the printer. Once you do, then go back and add it as a printer (you will see a first attemt by your mac before doing this that will be offline). I deleted the auto attempt by osx to create the printer and then added one manually. After turning on the wifi in the manager program it was easy to add just like a normal printer. Works well with the ipad/iphone too. Way frustrating but fixable. Good Luck!

PS-the samsung instruction were absolutely no help in getting it to work!

You just saved my life and my entire afternoon with your post and your screen shots. Even though people have decided to return their printers, it's not that easy to be done in Brazil, specially if you bought it online, so you indeed saved the money I spent on it.

Thank you very much! 🙂

About the original problem, I installed the software that comes with the printer in my MacBook Pro adding all the wifi details and then I deleted the printer from settings. After that, when I tried to add a new printer there was an option to install the Samsung printer and it said there were some mistakes in the previous installation and asked if I'd like to repair them. It went to work as it shold after that and I had no problems installing it in my MacBook Air.

I may be lucky but -- I'm not at all technical but I didn't have the problem you all semed to have had. I think it's probably because I installed this printer on my ladyfriend's PC first.

Then when that was running OK I installed it on my MacBook Pro.

I installed as per instructions, and then tried to print. I then got a message stating Software INcorrectly INstalled - do you want to fix it? I clicked Yes and then about 30 secs it repaired permissions.

I then completed installing easy print manager.

Then i tried to print but nothing happened so I clicked on printers in the Print Menu. It had Samsung 2160 as the generic printer - when I looked down the printer menu, it showed another Samsung 2160 with a long number after it. I designated that as the printer and tried to print again and lo and behold, success.

I hope this helps.

The software is a joke. My husband installed it and there is no way to connect wirelessly through it. I did not install the software on my Mac (Macbook,OS X 10.8.4) and this worked for me:

Connecting in PBC mode

1 Press and hold the (WPS) button on the control panel for more than

2 seconds. The machine starts waiting for up to two minutes until you press the WPS

(PBC) button on the access point (or wireless router).

2 Press the WPS (PBC) button on the access point (or wireless router).

This is from the full manual for the printer from here: http://mypdfmanuals.com/dref/4121800

Good instructions, indeed. After three hours of struggling with the network settings, I finally installed the printer!

There is a firmware update method via SyncThru, which works from a Mac, too. You MUST update the firmware, in order to use it without problems with Macs. Right now the printer works without any problems on a mixed Mac/PC/iPad/Android network.

You have to install it as a ML 2160 use a cab;le to connect to your machine and use the wifi set up tool, once that's installed you disconnect the cable and then install the 2160 software......thats what worked for me the wifi side of it came up as bonjour and it has a whole load of letters after it l added that...now mine works

Works fine with airport extreme base station, 10.7.5 and 10.9.2 in wi-fi mode

print network configuration from printer (to get pin number for WPS mode)

airport - just add WPS printer in pin mode

10.9.2 - just add printer (driver updates automatically)

10.7.5 - first install only driver from samsung support website, next add printer

All without cable and soft install
