"Manage My Places" not displaying maps

In Manage My Places I click on any place in the list, and no map is displayed. This just began, perhaps since upgrading to Lion. I've worked with iPhoto since then, but perhaps not with Manage My Places.

This is the latest version of iPhoto, latest update. I update iPhoto religiously, because I continue to hope, all evidence to the contrary, than each update will squash the many bugs which Apple seems to have built into iPhoto.

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.4), 2.66 GHz Core i7, 17", 8GB RAM

Not sure what you mean by opening and closing the library. If you mean quitting iPhoto '11, yes, that's documented at the beginning of the thread. Or do you mean something else, and have found a way of quitting iPhoto '11, then starting it again and the maps are displayed in Manage My Places without having to interrupt the Internet connection?

No, just what you though it meant. Quit and then relaunch. I didn't see any mention of losing the maps after your post with the "fix". That's why I went thru some experimentation. Just be sure to report it to Apple via http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html as will I.

As I've posted in this thread, I have brought the problem to the attention of Apple Care, and it has been escalated to Tier 2 support. The agent is still waiting for a reply from Engineering. I've developed software long enough and seen support organization from the inside to know how little leverage the support people sometime have, so, since I think we've waited long enough, I've asked the agent to please escalate.

As I've already requested, if anybody who has this problem also has Apple Care, please call them and ask them to read this thread, so that the agent doesn't always begin from scratch.

A quick update from me, I have deleted the cookies AND cache files from within safari itself and am really happy to report that my map in manage my places is now working. I have opens no closed the app a number of times as well as full shut downs and still me map works. Great news! I guess this would go hand in hand with the maps working on a new user account as no cookies / cache files would have been created on that account. Thanks all for the help here.

Yes, indeed, clearing Safari's caches and cookies seems to work. I'm just wondering how long the solution will last. I know that just clearing cookies didn't work for me. In fact, what I did was to select Reset Safari and then reset everything except the Top Sites. So maybe it wasn't cookies and/or caches at all, but something else.

If I didn't misunderstand him, the Tier 2 agent said that Manage My Places is a "web app", as opposed to the teeny weeny ℹ map for individual photos and events. So I guess it might have stored something in Safari's caches or cookies that just needed to be cleared out.

I will ask the Tier 2 agent whether he can shed more light on the matter and give us an indication about the permanence of the solution.

Upgrading from iPhoto '09 to iPhoto '11 solved this problem for me. If you're still on iPhoto '09, I can actually recommend upgrading to iPhoto '11 now, because they finally seem to have solved the bug whereby deleted keywords would reappear.

Glad you find the upgrade to iPhoto '11 worthwhile. I think you'll be quite satisfied unless you use Places a lot, especially the possibility to manually enter the place at which you took a photo.

The problem is with Google. Just delete the cookie google.com on safari... it works for me

Same issue, grey "places" on iPhoto 11

Went to Safari (5.1.7)--Preferences--Privacy--Cookies and other Web Data--Details

enter google in search box and select remove

I did not bother to determine if one or more cookies were releated to the issue, took the brute force approach

Restart iPhoto, Manage My Places , Map Available

Had Mavericks with iphot ver 9 (latest for Mavericks).

I could see the red pins in iphoto but map would not show in iphoto. Instead just had a yellow background. Apple maps was working ok.

Tried all recommendations here but none worked.

My particular solution was to upgrade to Yosemite which had the replacement 'Photos' app.

Worked first go.

Hi,

hum, I have iphoto 09 (8.1.2) and also got only one pin on a yellow map, and also cannot search for places and assign more precise locations than the provided list of towns.

Deleting cache and google-cookies in Safari did not work it out.

Do you have another hint I could try?

And, does iphoto 09 accept to enter GPS raw coordinates (and if so in which syntax)?

Add places to your photos

If you have photos that don’t have GPS information, including print photos that were scanned to a disk, you can still map your photos in Places.

iPhoto matches recognizable location names you enter, such as “Seattle” or “Milan,” to a mapping database. When you add a location to a single photo or an entire event, those photos are marked on the Places map.

Or, if you have latitude and longitude information for the place where you shot your photos, you can use that information to add the location.

Important: You must be connected to the Internet for the Places feature to show photo locations on the map.

Add a place name

Use latitude and longitude to add a place

Select the photo or event you want to add location information to.Tip: If you select an event, the location is added to every photo in that event. But you can add locations to selected photos without adding locations to them all. To do so, select the photos you want, move your pointer over them, and then click the Info button. Skip to step 3.
Click the Info button to open the Information pane.
Select “Assign a Place,” and then type the latitude and longitude, separated by a comma.For example, you can type “24.0, -110.5” or, if you prefer, you can use a longer format, such as “24.15988731, -110.50838234.” It’s important to always put the latitude first.
Look at the map to confirm the location, and then do one of the following:
- If the location is correct, continue to step 5.
- If the location is incorrect, retype the latitude and longitude, or drag the pin to a more exact location on the map.You can use the plus and minus buttons to zoom in and out, and drag the map to center it on a better spot.Note: You can move marker pins only in the small map that appears below Places in the Information pane. You can’t drag marker pins on the full-size Places map.
If you want, you can view the location marked on the full Places map by clicking the arrow next to the location name.

Copy the location of one photo to other photos

You can copy the location of one photo to another photo or photos.

Select a photo that has the location assigned to it that you want to copy, and then choose Edit > Copy.
Select one or more photos that you want to assign the same location to, and choose Edit > Paste Location. The location is added to the photos, which you can then view using Places.

Thanks, I also found this help page in the web - but it is not part of my help in iPhoto 09. Seems this feature came with iPhoto 11 only?

As I am still using MacosX 10.6.8 I think I cannot upgrade to iPhoto 11 (and also from this version I see posts with geotagging problems).

When I click on "search on map" i see the map for a fraction of a second, and then disappears for a yellow background with half of a pin at the bottom left border. How could I solve this? (turning off wlan and on, or delete google cookies does not help).

did you try entering the Lat/Long using the iPhoto '11 format?
