Apps are crashing because of high wired memory usage without reason!

Hi, I am using an iPhone 3GS, iOS 5.1.1 and had no problem with it so far, but couple days ago I installed the smartsync app (syncs my contacts with facebook) and since then all of the apps are keep crashing because of the wired memory goes up really high, crashes the phone and do it again. Even if there is no app open, the wired memory goes up really high and crashed the phone and then do it again. So the battery dies really fast, and you cannot really use any app! I deleted the smartsync, it didn't help! I did a restore and a back-up, didn't help so does anybody have any idea?

Thank you!

This is so argumentum ad hominem.

So for you, paulcb, the problem is not with the App and how it crashes the iOS, but the fact that there are people willing to sync their contact information with FB contacts to get their profile pics?

This thread is not about what I want to do and what you don't want to do, it is about a potential problem that could affect anyone who installed that app, no matter the reason they installed it in the first place.

What I think Apple could do eventually is remove the app from the app store --if they haven't already -- while also explain to the public the issues they found about the app and how to get rid of the problem for once and for all. That would be nice.

BTW, it crashed the App Store app just now, so the problem continues, even after deleting the app and doing a hard reset. The same with Safari just happened to. SmartSync is as bad as it is...

Summary of what to do your when iPhone crashes suddenly.

1. Double-click the Home button to see all the programs running in the background

2. Hold any App down for a second or two until you see the minus sign.

3. Tap the minus sign to close App.

4. Reset your iPhone. Hold the Sleep and Home button down for about 10 seconds until you see the Apple logo.

Thank you, but it didn't help! Even if there is no app running in the background and only the app is running what with i can see the memory usage, the wired memory goes up high and crashes. By crashed I mean every apps quits and the phone switchs back to the home pages (in case i would use the word crashes wrong 😝) So unfortunatelly that didn't help! Thank you for the answer though!

Any other idea?

I am experiencing the exact same thing right now as well. I ran the Facebook friends picture sync (part of the native app), as I have not done so in quite some time, and now every app starts to chew through memory until it crashes...but only when wifi is enabled curiously... I called Apple, but my iPod is out of warranty, so they want $29. I tried to close all running apps, including the Facebook app, but when I re-launch it, it is still trying to sync the photos. I have done a backup and restore, but to no avail. I am thinking to do a DFU wipe which is extremely frustrating, and the dumbest fix for any issue ever. It reminds me of what I need to do to keep Windows running well... I do not like the thought that Apple is headed for the same fate...

Hi,

Yeah it is quite annoying! It did reminded me to the old windows times... But I guess it is the smartsync app that somehow chrashes the ios or something. I am not sure. But finally, nothing worked for me and nobody could help me. So finally I had to do a restore and restore it as a new iPhone. What of course delete every personal things from your phone but I just realized that in the age of iCloud it is not that a big problem 😝 I mean my contacts where synced with icloud without a problem and because of in my itunes i had all my preveious apps, it wasnt that hard either to put them back to my phone! So it is not an end of the world thing. Took maybe 1 hour to have my phone back. Oh yeah, and after doing this, the problem disappeared so it works great again! But might wanna go back to appstore and leave some nice ratings about this app because for me it seems causing the problem!

Taking 1 hour of my time is not acceptable for an Apple issue. If I could simply kill the process, I would not have to take more than 5 minutes. I see this as a much bigger issue of them wasting my time. THEY should spend the hour to troubleshoot and fix the actual issue. Restoring from backup is not an acceptable answer to such an inquiry, unless my phone were lost, stolen, or broken.

I have done everything, from rebooting the iPhone, uninstalling SmartSync, restored my phone etc.

It seems SmartSync breaks the iPhone from within and so far no solution from Apple. I have an iPhone 4S and ever since I installed SmartSync, my phone broke up.

Every app I run breaks after some minutes.

Also, the battery usage spiked! It takes 5 minutes to reduce 1~2% of battery life. And nothing I do fix this, even though I have already uninstalled the app. One thing it could eventually do is misuse some libraries, including notifications, so that it hangs, uses a lot of memory, reduces battery life and breaks other apps out of nowhere.

How can I fix this now? Any real suggestions that actually fix this, or this might end up as a dead issue? I hope not. SmartSync has made my phone worse than the old Windows Mobile cell phones. I hope I can get a fix.

This was the first thing I did after I noticed it caused possibly a memory problem that led apps to crash after running for some minutes.

Even though I had already removed and turned off and on the phone again, the problems persisted.

Right now I tried the hard reset by pressing the power and the home button for 10s. So far it seems the unstability is over, but just deleting the app and turning the phone off and on again wasn't enough to get rid of its problems.

I know Apple has nothing to do with SmartSync. But Apple has a lot to do with the App Store and it's hard to understand the testing process of apps like that. Isn't it tested? Didn't Apple find these problems before publishing the app for GA? To be or not to be reliable, that's the question?

They probably did test it but I suspect any testing they do is limited. Any idea how many apps they have to test and approve on a daily basis? Like anything, the app store is not perfect but it's by far the best and safest one out there.

Personally, I think you're crazy for syncing anything personal with any social service, especially a big target like FB.

No meant to be argumentative, just stating facts. My personal comment about syncing with social media was just that, a comment. Don't be so sensitive.

The world is far from perfect, which includes all apps and all app stores. If you find one that gives you problems, delete it. In this caase, finding or assigning blame will get you nowhere.

If you still have problems, standard troubleshooting is...

Reset by pressing the home and sleep buttons until you see the Apple logo, ignoring the slider. Takes about 5-15 secs of button holding and you won't lose any data or settings.

If still a problem restore from your backup.

If still a problem restore as new, i.e. without your backup. See how it runs with nothing synced to it.

If still a problem, it's likely a hardware issue.

Good luck. 😉

Hi

I had exactly the same problem with SmartSync! I had tried everything and the only way to solve this problem if you restore your phone AS A NEW iPHONE. If you do a simple restore that will not solve the problem, tried it! Above you can read my comment where I shared my experiencies! Here it is again:

Paul, no comments there, I think you got my point. I'm not the one being sensitive here, I just want Apple to recognize there's a big issue there and that they should look more into it. It seems to be something big there, some sort of bad bug, maybe even a security bug? Who knows. To me it seems that the app keeps running in the background, even after you delete it. Is it possible? it seems to be to me. Hopefully Apple will find that out, if not too late.

I mean, there are more than 10 people complaining about the app, so this is not a personal problem I am having here, that's the point. The app *****, ok, but why does it keep sucking after you delete it? That's a mystery.

@csabanova, I will try to restore the phone as new eventually. If nothing works and this works, I will post it here for everyone to know 2 important things:

1) SmartSync is causing problems;

2) A single app CAN cause problems in the iOS, even when it's deleted, no matter if it's SmartSync or something else. So watch out.

Best,

Leo
