Cannot restore iPhone backup ?

I've recently restored my iPhone to its original settings and now I'm trying to restore my latest backup and it doesnt work. The message that I get is 'iTunes could not restore the iPhone because the backup was corrupt or not compatible with the iPhone that is being restore'.

Note: I backed up the file the day before restoring it to its original settings so I do not think that compatibility is an issue.

Thanks for any help. 🙂

Assuming you have older backups:
* Mac OS: ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup
* Windows XP: %AppData%\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup
* Windows Vista: %AppData%\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup
* Windows 7: %AppData%\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup
Go onto iTunes, right click on your device on the left-hand side bar, and their should be an option 'Restore From Backup', or something similar, click that and it'll help you to restore iPhone from previous Backup.

I had this and this link below helped me. I took the cable to my Iphone 4 off my PC and linked to my Mac and downloaded this software below for the Mac. I then saw that i didnt need to pay (free trial) and it asked me to hit the re-start button once i opened up their software that I downloaded and it put my iphone 4 back to how it was working before to corrupted, all ok now, (it put me back to the old software). I then downoaded all the camera roll that I thought i'd lost. Phewww!!

It turns out that apple has changed its iTunes store and doesn't allow iTunes to iPhone Notes, Calendar, contacts syncing. So I'm guessing that because the back up file has all contacts included it falls under the category of back ups that are not compatible with the new iPhone and iTunes sync system.

The new way apple wants us to sync our contacts and such is through iCloud. Good idea or or not aside a big jump like this one should have been advertised by apple. You would think that they would have had disclaimers every where... But sadly the didn't. Now for all us users that had not synced our contacts to i cloud before we did our restore, then we have just lost all our contacts! Thats terrible apple, i can not believe a multibillion dollar company would do such a clumsy move. Thanks to this new change i have lost all my contacts, but luckily i did a sync maybe 6 months ago to my outlook contacts. Still losing all my contacts for this past 6 months.

Thanks apple,

Past biggest fan.

I know this is a somewhat old thread, but I'm interested to see if anyone else is having an issue like this.

I work on the program Decipher Backup Repair, that fixes the errors in an iTunes backup so that you can restore your device in iTunes. I'd be very interested to know if anyone thinks they're having a restore issue because of notes, calendar, or contacts and iCloud. Those settings shouldn't affect how the restore works with iTunes as suggested above, but obviously if they are interfering, I would love to integrate a fix into our software. If your backup isn't restoring, and you think it might be related to an issue like this, I hope you'll try Decipher Backup Repair:

And if it doesn't work, contact us at http://deciphertools.com/support.html so we can figure out what is going wrong with your restore! Please mention my name directly, Kelly, so that your note gets directed to me for sure! 🙂

(Note: As I mentioned, I work for the company I've discussed above, so I stand to benefit, either financially or otherwise, from the links I'm recommending.

Hi Kelly,

I actually just received my iphone 6+ and am having the same issue. I had an iphone 4 prior and I have never come across this issue. Message states "iTunes could not restore the iPhone because the backup was corrupt or not compatible with the iPhone that is being restore".

Hi Marhalfm,

Do you have the old iPhone (that you used to create the backup) still? If you do, and it still has the data on it 😉, then we could delete the corrupt backup and rebuild it from scratch by backing up the old device again. That may be a simple fix to the problem.

If you don't have the old device anymore, or the old device doesn't have data on it anymore (like if you've wiped it for trade-in or selling) then our only option is to work with what we have. I would start by downloading our free trial from the download link in my previous post, and looking to see what kind of issues it reports.
