Just now at WWDC major update to Aperture

http://tinyurl.com/d4fsvf4 is a discussion on ApertureExpert. I searched for my comments on this form but couldnt find them. Leonie confirmed the problem. But its now fixed.

The bug WAS

Try importing into Aperture 3.2.3 a large color Tiff file like Adobe98 and add a solid color fill like (72, 182, 70) into a selection, (collapse all layers). The previews and thumbnails of the color green looks hosed. Export that image out of AP3 via versions with no adjustments and the image is not the same as the original. Color loss via import and Export This happens in other colors but green is pretty easy to see. First brought to my attention on ApertureExpert.com forums.

And I'm going to need a truckful of cases as I process the iPhoto-like devolution to the new "simpler" Highlights and Shadows Brick (the Tonal Width sliders are gone).

I have applied that adjustment to at least 2,000 personal pictures.

The Highlights & Shadows adjustment controls have been updated in Aperture 3.3 for ease of use, reduced halo effect with shadow adjustments, improved highlight detail recovery, and better overall performance. (Emphasis added.)

Gah! Can I _please_ have my High and Low Tonal Width sliders back. This, singly, will have me looking to replace Aperture.

Fwiw, the on-line User Manual has not been updated (2012.06.11 23:20 EST). The quote above is from the Ap 3.3 Help file.

All your old Highlight & Shadow uses remain untouched. You have to manualy upgrade the adjustment itself. The new adjustment is the default for new uses, but the old instances aren't changed unless you want them too.

Masters are dead?

Major terminology changes from Aperture 3.2 to 3.3. 😮 That will make composing posts a pain - I see us already writing "master (if you are on version 3.2) or originals (if you are using version 3.3 or iPhoto)" - what a mess!

I'd love to. But I think I'll have to wait. My recent MBP is only two month old 🙂

I could not wait for the new release since I had to replace my lost MBP.

BTWW how does iPhoto handle preview generation?

No idea, but this made me look at the Aperture Previews.

Luckily the "Preference" panel is still colored. 😁

The "Camera Preview" option has been moved to the Import Panel and now contains a warning message. I wonder if the behaviour of camera previews will have changed as well.

"Aperture offers various options to set the size of Previews or whether to use Previews at all. iPhoto always creates full size Previews. When you open an Aperture library in iPhoto, existing Previews are not changed unless you edit an image in iPhoto. If you do, a full size Preview for that image is created."

Yes, and thanks. The transition to the new, simpler, tool has been well-implemented. My problems are likely to be with the new tool. Apple seems to have removed functionality in favor of simplicity. I applaud their effort to improve the functioning of the Highlights & Shadows Brick: it is likely to be more usable. At the same time, usability has in this case come at the cost of some power. As a user of that power, this disappoints directly.

Indirectly, it points towards two things, each of which worries me:

- the solution resolves a problem inelegantly (excising functionality is one way to simplify the interface; it's just not a good way), and

- this particular kind of inelegance was accepted (making Aperture less powerful is an unwelcome design goal, imho).

The first is a matter of laziness; the second is a matter of direction.

Together with the other non-directly-iOS-related changes (lots of one-button processing), this deprecation of sophisticated elegance and elevation of ignorant simplicity seems to announce (clearly) Apple's intentions for Aperture. I find that deeply worrying.

That new-in-April MBP is still cute enough to find a good home 😁 .

Master is now Original?

Metadata is now Info?

I'm guessing, or assuming that Original was the term used in iPhoto? I hope so. At least I can understand the decision to unify terms between the two apps.

I'm not sure I would agree with changing Metadata to Info. Even if that's what iPhoto uses. Metadata is an industry standard, across a wide variety of applications. That doesn't seem to be a very good idea.

Although, I can see that you will now be able to easily move up to Level 6, simply by explaining these new terminology changes.
