Just a quick note, I found this solution worked for me after I tryied the Gutenprint options and they didn't work out. Hope it helps.

Thanks for posting, Jack. Experiencing same problem: Epson Workforce 610 worked fine on wireless Ethernet for months, then stopped working around March. Deleting driver and re-creating works for a short time, then more of those failures you noted.

The file you reference, Jack, is no longer on that server. Could you ftp it to me? I will give you the FTP details if you are willing to send it up to me. I still hope you have it. The files jump from really old stuff to 5.2.9 now.

I tried 5.2.9 but all it did was print out blank paper forever until I cancelled the print in the mac queue and the windows queue. It doesn't matter where I attempted to print from, the result was the same - shooting out blank pages to my printer on my print server (I have a router).

I have an Epson Stylus Photo R300 - they have drivers but they don't work. I think they screwed up stuff in 5.2.9 and took theh good stuff off the download site.

By the way, the reason the printer stopped working was because of an apple update for printers. My computer worked fine (printing) since I bought it last December. I got notification there were updates and one of them was a printer update. I applied both updates and that's when the printer stopped working. Some ding dong or a group of ding dongs at apple screwed up printing.. They should be terminated for such sloppy coding. Apple is getting worse and worse with their software. No way will I update to mountain lion. They have hired a lot of Indians to do the coding now for the bottom line, I worked for 20 years on mainframes and had nothing but trouble with vendors represented by Indians. Keep them out of our software. They are going to ruin very important programs needed by people and the goverenment if they are not cut off from writing our code to save money. Indians are dangereous (Indians = people from India)

Thank you so much; I spent 3-4hours trying to solve the rastertoescpII problem that showed up a week or so ago. Your link to "...gimp-print.sourceforge..." worked fine for me. The latest version for gutenprint was 5.2.9 The download and install went easily and your clear directions for what to do in System Preferences was so helpful. My only difference was that when I selected "driver" in the dialogue box I couldn't find anywhere to select the appropriate guenprint driver. Apparently I didn't need to.

I'm using OX 10.6.8 and the Epson WF600.

The files listed on the http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/MacOSX.php page are adjusted by version number when a new version comes out. That web page is meant to make the standard sourceforge.net project page more user friendly. All the current and past releases can still be found at http://sourceforge.net/projects/gimp-print/files/. I am not aware of any changes made in the SP R300 driver. It should be exactly the same driver in Gutenprint 5.2.7, 5.2.8-pre1, 5.2.8, and 5.2.9 and probably before v 5.2.7. I don't know exactly when the druver for that particular printer was added.

Given the description of your problems, I would suggest that you first reset the printing system and re-add your printers. That may resolve your issues.

I finally fixed it. First I updated the locate database so every file name on my boot drive could be searched. This is far superior to spotlight searches.

I then did a locate 'EPSON Sylus Photo R300.gz' from a terminal in super user mode. (a search command with a ton more powere than spotlight)

I noted each location (there were 3) where that string popped up.

I navigated in find to each location and did a rm with the -R option to delete the three directories mac had stored the R300 in.(rm is the remove command and the -R option tells if what you are deleting is a directory, delete the directory and every directory and fle under it).

I reran the origianl install for the Guttenberg drivers (including the R300 drivers).

I attempted to print from my mac mini to my windows print server.

TOUCHDOWN!!!!

Thank you all for your help, especially Jack who hit the nail on the head to remove existing apple R300 drivers before attempting the gutenberg driver install.

Aarrgh. Today, we tried to print a PDF file and our Mac running 10.6.8 ran into this error on our Epson NX430. Then like a dummy, I tried to print it from another Mac, running 10.7.4. Got the error. Then nothing else would print, not even a TextEdit file. We had not run any Apple updates at all for months - when I went into Software Update, I saw all the updates that had piled up - and yet our printer worked fine until today, and I guess something about that PDF file caused the issue.

Did what Jack Skeen did, with Epson tier 1 and 2 support for over an hour - reset the printing system in Print & Scan; deleted the /Library/Printers/Epson folder, the /Library/Caches/Epson folder, and an Epson Printer plist file in /Library/Preferences; and one time loaded a fresh DMG drivers file from Epson, and another time allowed OS X to find the drivers from Apple. Repaired permissions, rebooted, emptied Trash, etc.

The Epson reps were polite but reading from a script, and what the tier 2 guy had me do was essentially the same as what the tier 1 guy had me do. Tier 1 had me download from Epson, and tier 2 had me download via OS X when it detected the printer. Oddly, even though I clearly explained about the rastertoescpII error or whatever this is, they did not act like they had heard it, till I was almost finished trying and the tier 2 guy indicated it was in their records.

Anyhoo, the point is, if this helps you, I finally turned off wireless on the printer, connected via USB, and everything works fine, including the original "bad" PDF file.

Thanks Jack. This worked for my MacBook Pro 10.6.8, using Epson CX6600. Nothing changed between June and Septemeber except software update. Error led to the "rasteroescpll". Never had wi-fi printing, but USB connection did not working either unless I could get it to run a test page off another (PC) laptop first (strange...). Had already tried reseting and re-installing/updating printer/driver w/o success. The gimp-print worked for me, and was easy to install with your directions. Thanks again.

I experienced the same issue when trying to print a PDF and then couldn't print anything. I bought this imac in April and had left the computer name empty. I used flavrdesign's solution of naming my computer and viola! Thank you!

Easy solution worked right away on epson help for my 2400...Go to sytem preferences to sharing and name your printer. go to apple preferences and name the printer. badda bing. worked! I suggest you go to epson help though and follow for your printer. I may have left a step out but it took 2 minutes. whew. I dont want to buy a new printer just now.

Thankyou, thankyou, thankyou tried several workarounds and this worked first time 🙂 🙂 🙂 First time an Aplle update has cocked up my work for ages, hope this isn't going to become a regular feature of their updates.

I updated my Mac to 10.9 and then when I wanted to print I got an error message 'Filter failed' . My Mac wasn't named. Having read this post, I named it and then added a printer without sharing. It asked if I really wanted to add the same printer. I agreed and it named itself as Epson Printer R300 2.

Then when I pushed Command + P, it said it needed to repair permissions, asking for my permission to self correct, which I granted--because I'm at its mercy.

It worked!
