iPhone 4 on iOS 5.1.1 Using 3G Data on WiFi networks

Hi everyone!

I have an iPhone 4 and it has been using from 10MB to 100MB of my data plan while I'm on a WiFi network. This usually happens at night or when my iPhone is on standby and is killing my 200MB plan. I am almost always on a WiFi network and the most data usage seems to be around 12AM - 6AM. I have just picked up on this when I was out of state and needed to have my 3G on to get good reception (data roaming was off). Before then I usually never had my cellular network on and never had much of a problem. Now i have come home to an AT&T M-Cell. I cannot connect to the M-Cell unless I'm on 3G.

I have read many forums that all say that you need to turn off your data while I'm on a WiFi network. However this is just a work around and not a solution to what is actually using so much data. Has anyone found a better solution or has found an app that will keep a log of what is taking up so much of my data plan?

Try turning cellular data off overnight when your iPhone is connected to a power source. If your cellular statement says that there was data usage during this time, then you will know that the statement is not reporting the actual time of usage.

Others have done this and reported that it doesn't work. The time is reported as soon as the phone connects to the network. The only way to actually find out is to write down (or do a screen shot) of the Usage screen in the evening and again in the morning.

Let me further explain my post. There have been posts in this forum that indicate that at least 1 carrier claims that the late night/early data useage listed on their statements are actually rollup usage for the day that are posted to the accounts at late/night early hours. So, if you turn off cellular data and your carrier statment shows a data charge posted during the time cellular data was off, that may indicate that the carrier's claim is true. If on the other hand, the high data useage is posted after you turn your cellular data back on, that could indicate that something is actually sending data over celluar data.

Well, I am noting about 6 MB of data (send and receive) between midnight and 6am when I check it with the Dataman app around 6am. I found another app called "Onavo" that supposedly gives you a graph of data by app, along with use of a proxy for download...not sure how accurate it is. But I turned the proxy off and Onavo is reporting a huge amount of data usage that it is labeling as "iOS."

Not sure what that means.

iCloud is completely turned off and disabled.

Perhaps push alerts?

Well, I thought I had it figured out, but last night during the hours which I am not awake, between 11:00pm and 4:00am, the phone sent and received a total of 16MB of data via cellular while it was plugged in to AC power with Apple's cable/adapter with a WiFi signal available.

This was logged by the data monitoring software installed on the phone, but still don't know what exactly is using it.

It did not send 16MB at once, but all throughout the night it was sending and receiving data ranging from 6k - 16k coming and going....all night.

According to my usage posted online in my ATT account, the total of 16MB was timestamped for 11:25pm, but it actually occured from 11:00 through about 4:00am according to the phone log.

Now if I could just figure out what the heck was using that data.

I have an iphone 4S and my girlfriend has an iphone 4, we have all the exact same settings and both have onavo installed. My 4S uses on average 40MB of data which onavo labels as iOS but on my girlfriends phone 4 with all the same settings (for instance push notifications turned off and icloud over cellular setting off etc) her phone uses an average of 1GB of iOS specific data per month?

What exactly does iOS data usage refer to? and how can one limit its usage?

I have access to the phone and I can't even figure it out....the phone doesn't tell you much of anything. I'm almost resorting to seeing if any jailbreak apps will give me what I want. Dataman Pro was the only app that would help discern which app was using the data, but Apple took it out of the app store....

Arvetus, thanks for posting on this. I've been trying to figure this out myself for a few months now. It wasn't a problem until recently - maybe July? I currently live overseas and they only let me do pre-paid internet, so I buy 100MB and it usually lasts me 15 days or more. As of July or maybe August, all my data is used in less than 2 days. My wife has the exact same phone (iphone 4s) and hers lasts 15+ days. She uses it more than I do!

I'm wondering if there was an update back in July or something that changed our phones as many seem to have reported the problem then.

Has anyone tried completely restoring their phone? I would but my mac is out of space and I can't afford an external hard drive right now.

Though may not be the best option but I turn off cellular data and turn it on only when I need it. I have wifi at home and work where my iphone is used heavy data use. I also get free wifi from my cable service provider and i turn on the cellular data only if I need them.

I faced similar issue of what others have faced but very extreme. I called AT&T customer service and they informed me that my phone used 215 MB around 1 AM in one night (phone was at home plugged in to power and connected to WIFI). I 'm not heavy data user and have only 200 MB data plan.

Good luck to all to resolve the mystery of the data usage.
