Macbook Pro no audio in ??
I notice there is no microphone in socket on the new Macbook Pro Retina.
I need to record voiceovers via a mic for FCP, how will I do this now ?

This kind of thing is why Apple will eventually lose market share. The people that kept Apple afloat during the tough times are being completely ignored.
Remember what happened to BlackBerry? You guys are headed that way......
Is this stereo or mono only, though?
Apple made a big mistake on this one. Save a few bucks and take out the line-in jack?? Now force people to buy third party audio interfaces they will be calling tech support for. When you get the third party interfaces to work, most will have delay/latency problems recording.
...And get rid of out of the box Garageband support for using an electric guitar...genious.
I hope there is an update soon.
I've MBP w/Retina 13"... confirm it has Digital Out, I managed to connect it to my Denon CEOL Piccolo digital in port (with Belkin's Digital Optical Audio Cable).
I use and sell these http://www.rationalacoustics.com/store/audio-i-o/rational-acoustics-smaarti-o.ht ml
I also recomend the Roland Octa Capture, and the MOTU 8pre.
For the guitar player the first one should do nicely.
There are cheaper alternatives. You get what you pay for. I never would have recorded voice overs through a mic jack on the side of the computer. I know of no professional mic that would even adapt into that without issues. I record numerous VOs nearly every show using the Smaart I-O or the MOTU 8pre and a Shure SM58S (switched). A better choice would be the EV RE20, or a Nuemann U87, for example. The RE20 is a great VO mic.
I agree Baracus11. Apple, stupid decision.
BTW, nice marketing job proaudioguy
It might be if you had any way to contact me to make a purchase or if i made something from you buying those from them. But alas you can't find me, none of my real info is here, and if you buy something there it doesn't benefit me in any way. Also I only make 10% gross on them so if i sold 10 per day i would break even with my regular job. I only sell about 3-4 per year.

Hi,
how come you say Apple has dropped Line IN support on the Macbook Pro Retina? Profiler says it has a combo connector and apple website [1] says it is compatible with iphone headset
Hi ctoph,
Those are two separate things. They kept the combo connector (compatible with iPhone headset) but removed Line In support. :-\ I have to dig out my 2009 MBP if I want to do Line-In recording now.
How about this connector?
I'll let y'all know in a couple days.
k.A.U., it still won't be stereo input, but may be ok for mic-specific purposes.
Don't buy the Retina MBP then? I you can afford that, then surely you can splash out $40 for a cheap audio interface on ebay?
And besides, the way you mentioned you record I bound to yield poor results. You're connecting an instrument level source to a line-level input of a laptop sound card. You'd obtain much better sounding recordings, even with a entry level interface such as the Apogee Jam, or Presonus Audiobox 22.
For a lower cost, you could get the Logitech USB to 3.5mm audio adapter. It connects to your Mac with USB and provides both an audio input and an output, and for $20(£12.26): http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-3-5mm-Audio-Adapter-version/dp/B00FH1KTFI/ref=sr_ 1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1411137887&sr=8-5&keywords=Logitech+USB+to+3.5mm
I agree. I use my 2010 MBP to record audio from a soundboard using standard stereo RCA cables from the board and a 2-to-stereo-1 adapter going into the MBP. Capture it using AudioHijack Pro. After discovering that the new MBP's have dropped audio-in, I'm having to seriously reconsider upgrading to the new MBP.
A USB adapter costs $7 on Amazon. Thanks for complaining.
Folks,
The original poster has asked a valid question that I would also like to know the answer to. There are literally tons of cheap USB headset adapters (I just mistakenly bought one myself) that have a MONO MIC IN, and STEREO HEADPHONE OUT - this is electrically no different from the headset port on the side of the MBP and are a waste of time and money.
Pretty sure what we're looking for is something with a STEREO LINE-LEVEL IN (not mono microphone-level) and STEREO LINE-LEVEL OUT (not headset-level). If you try to pipe something line-level into these mic-level input devices, not only will they merge L+R together, but the signal level is way too high and it clips - not exactly the desired result if you're trying to digitize anything from an external tape deck, turntable (with preamp), or other audio device.
Would appreciate anyone's input on how to get what we're both looking for.
