Updated Thunderbolt, crashed machine

Did update, said restart, got grey screen with error message to restart but did this repeatedly to no avail. Had weird message in upper left hand corner of screen. Finally called Apple. They are having me reinstall lion. We'll see if that work.

Has anyone else had this proble? If so, what worked for you?

Found a link to getting iMac going using the Lion recovery feature (see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718). I followed this process, Lion was downloaded again in about 45 mins, it installed itself and now runs fine. All my data is still intact, including Parallels and my virtual machines. I am not going to run the updating process for a day or two!

Good luck to all. This mistake is not like Apple - I only switched from Microsoft to Apple about 18 months ago and so far my experience has been very good. I have to confess though, the ability to do Lion recovery over the internet was pretty impressive - Windows can't do anything like that!

I installed the update because it came up in the automatic updates system that Mac OSX runs on my iMac. That probably means that Apple wrongly tagged this update as applying to a wider population of Macs than the intended audience. I will say that my iMac includes a Thunderbolt port so it may be that the same adapter could be used with that port?

I also posted the same problem in another Category, and recieved the following very useful post in reply:

Yes. Many are having this issue and it's from Apple's Thunderbolt Update which was released yesterday to support Apple's new Thunderbolt adaptors. Here is information on how to fix this issue: http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-57451440-263/thunderbolt-update-plaguing-ma cbook-pros-with-kernel-panics/

It was very thankfully recieved from:

I had the exact same problem myself today at work - on my 27" iMac (2011 model).

The update failed and told me to reboot. Cue a kernel panic every time I tried to boot into OS X. Disk Repair was unable to repair my drive and I had to wait three solid hours while my iMac was completely restored from my last backup (which was, thankfully, only 45 min old).

I think Apple may have pulled the update, because after I got back up and running, the Thunderbolt update was missing from the list of available updates. I've no way to confirm this, however.
