Aperture and iPhoto can't connect to Photostream

I think it's happened since maybe the most recent OSX upgrade, but now I seem unable to connect to Photostream with either iPhoto or Aperture on my MacBook Air. Oddly, with the same software and settings, my old MacBook Pro 17" has no trouble connecting. What could be the issue? Whenever I try to enable Photostream, I get the "connecting..." dialog for a few seconds, then "Aperture (or iPhoto) is unable to connect to Photostream."

Well, I went ahead and followed the instructions with the chmod instruction on the Shared folder. Fortunately, all H... didn't break loose. However, after the change, I restarted the machine and iPhoto, and when I tried again to connect to Photo Stream, I got the same old result. Any other ideas? Thanks for pursuing this issue so diligently!

Well, I found this by doing a Google search of "unable to connect to photostream". I know in general if applications get stuck, it's worth trying deleting the preferences files. Maybe that's what this article is suggesting - I didn't check my own finder to see what files he's specifically addressing. But the concept seems reasonable to me. See what you think:

Update: I just looked at my own setup and his action (delete those files) still seems reasonable. Note the article misspells "preferences".

I actually wiped my computer's hard (solid-state) disk, installed a new copy of Lion, imported my old libraries from my Time Machine backup, and now? Rather than waiting for a few seconds, iPhoto simply unchecks its own Photostream box when I check it. The Photostream box stays checked in System Preferences too. So then I went to Aperture, and when I checked Photostream, it said I couldn't do that because iPhoto was already using Photostream. If I did check the box, Aperture would take over Photostream from iPhoto. So I did, and thus Aperture picked up Photostream. Half good, half bad? Weird situation, methinks.

Well, I felt it was important to start with a new copy of OSX, so I didn't restore the machine from the Time Machine backup, but after the new OS was installed, I imported my apps and data using Migratiion Assistant. I've trashed the Preferences files more than once in this arduous trek of mine, so not sure of the benefit of doing it again?

Thank you for asking this question and for the discussion. The same thing is happening to me with Aperture and Photostream, but I am traveling and not able to sit for hours trying to sort it out. I have spent two days in Phoenix and two days in Boise at the Apple genius bars, but they could not find the problem.

I'm so sorry I did not follow my own rule (Do NOT upgrade to a new systerm but wait until a new computer can be bought) and I upgraded my MacBook to Lion OS because of the change to iCloud. I bought Aperture at the same time. So many little things just don't work. Please, if any of you discover a fix to this problem, share it in this or another discussion. Thanks.

Thank you for posting on this thread. I have just started having the same problem with Iphoto and Photostream. Everything was working perfectly but has suddenly stopped. By restarting Icloud on my Iphone4 and Ipad2 "Iphoto cannot connect to photostream".

Sometimes it goes as far as showing the post it pads which are the precursor to Photostream opening up but then it stops. This is really frustrating - I have scoured the internet for a solution but canot find one! I was wondering if you had managed to find a solution yet?

I am running mountain lion 10.8.1 and Iphoto 9.3.2.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

PS I am new to the world of Mac and so apologise if I am being dumb!
