what is 15" macbook pro retina HDMI max resolution?
will it support 2560x1600 output? (im trying to connect it to 30" display)
and if it does where can i find a proper hdmi to displayport or hdmi to dvi-d cable or adapter that works for sure.

The HDMI port on the retina MBP can output at 2560x1600 max, according to HDMI specifications. The laptop can output that to HDMI while also putting out full resolution to the retina screen (2880x1800).

And maybe there is a deliberate restriction (to force user to use Thunderbolt port for better quality and evolution) ...
I have the new Mac Book Pro (Huntsville, AL Apple Store purchase), and I was told that the max output from the HDMI port is the 1080 (1920 x 1200) while the Thunderbolt port is 2880x1880.
If you plug in macbook retina to a hdmi television do you hear the audio through the television speakers?

Why do you care about HDMI for a 30" 2560x1600 display? What you need is a mini-displayport to dual link DVI adapter for a apple 30" display.
my thunderbolt ports are maxed out by video processing cards and external drives, so i'm trying to not put any more load there if i can get that resolution out of hdmi.
what i really need is a proper mac pro.

You need HDMI cable 1.3 or 1.4 to work with 2560x1600
So I recently bought a ASUS PB278Q monitor which supports 2560x1440 over HDMI 1.4.
I tried the HDMI cable that came with the monitor and was only able to get 1080P from my 15" MB Pro/retina.
I installed Windows 8 on a USB 3.0 - SSD drive, booted into from the MB and plugged the HDMI cable in to see what I would get.
The monitor was instantly recoginized and displayed the max resolution of 2560x1440.
So one can deduce that the MB hardware definitley supports it, but Apple has limited the resolution to 1080P for OSX 😟
Would using any of the resolution apps out there help force the output to 2560x1440? If not, we should petition Apple to get OSX to support this. They're marketing an HDMI 1.4 output when the software does not even support it.
Yes, this is crazy.
I got the best HDMI cable with Hight Speed, Enternet and supports a huge resolution of 4096x2160, but I can't use this on a 2013 Apple machine.
