Where is the 17" new macbook Pro

Nice analogy! I feel the same - I mean the retina display is good, and yes you can get a resolution to match the current 17" on the 15" screen, but at the end of the day it's screen size I need. Whether its 3" thick or 1" or weighs 1lb or 5lbs, I don't really care, but Apple it seems do think we care. It makes a difference on iPhone because you need to hold it up to your face and fit it in your pocket, but with a MacBook, I just want it to be portable. If they can get retina onto a 17" screen (and at a reasonable price), wonderful, but if no retina, I don't really care. My concern is better gfx and the Ivy Bridge processor not making it to a 17" MacBook when both the 13" and 15" both received these upgrades without SSD as standard or retina. I use mine with Logic Pro and on a 17" screen you have to lean in to see what's there. Would hate to think what it's like on a 15". Seems the 17" market isn't a money maker for them anymore.

I too will miss the 17" MBP. I've been a MBP 17" since the original G5 17". I tried the 15" at the Apple store and cranked up the resolution to 1920X1200 which made the text almost unreadable.

Please Apple reconsider and bring back the 17".

Yes Richard, physical real estate. The current resolution is fine for office work, gaming, video and still images. Re those comments about the higher resolution of the new 15" - why have a higher resolution that makes text difficult to read. And yes we need more connectivity not less. On the question of DVD/BR, ditch it use an external device on the odd occasion you need one. Fill up the space with connection options, and or a secondary battery. Maybe a more powerful video card!

Does Apple not get the concept that users want/need connectivity, excellent battery life, a decent display not necessarily the uberness of a retina display (maybe as an option build) and I concur with you re sveltness Richard, I'm a fuly grown adult I am quite capable of carrying a few extra grams in my bag - no more fuctionally starved anorexic machines please Apple.

If the 1920 x 1200 resolution of the Retina display in the MBP 15" is Apple's answer to MBP 17" users' prayers for an upgrade, then Apple could certainly lend credence to this implicit recommendation by producing a controlled study that proves that a Retina display with a 15" diagonal operating at a resolution of 1920 x 1200 is easier on eyes of all ages than the display on the present MBP 17". There are some factors that might actually support that hypothesis -- crisper print, less screen glare (according to Apple), less head movement required from wearers of reading glasses (incl. bifocals, Varilux, etc.) -- but only a serious study can prove it.

The Retina display on my new iPhone 4S is nothing short of a revelation in comparison to that of my old iPhone 3GS.

The 17' inch is now extinct. Apple got ridd of it because they felt that it didn't go along with their product line with the launch of the 15' inch Retina display macbook pro.

And the Retina display isn't so good. Its kinda slow when it comes to video and stuff like that but its great for video games.

No sadly i disagree. When i first saw 1900x1200 readable on the 15 my jaw dropped a foot at how awesome and amazing that sight actually was, but after the tinkering was done, when doing actual usage.. my eyes were watering from the strain, and my head was down a few inches from the screen.

Good for emergencies (like web browsing on an iphone) is probably all i would qualify it for 😟

So the 15" supports 2880 by 1800 pixels (Retina); scaled resolutions: 1920 by 1200, 1680 by 1050, 1280 by 800, and 1024 by 640 pixels. Well assuming one decided to hook up a BR player (remember we have no drive now) and watch a movie at max res of1920x1080 - my existing 17" encompasses this already. I often play movies on my existing 17" when I travel, but now I have to pre-rip them etc.

So presumably the Retina display is to allow still images from a high end digital camera say the Canon EOS 5D Mark III - 5760 × 3840 pixels, hmmm ok that doesn't work.

So the 15" offers a 5.18mp display that is greater than any movie I would like to watch, on a smaller screen, and is underpowered for high-end DSLR cameras - brilliant.

As for publishing, we step down from being able to work on 2 A4 pages side by side to a shrunken version - gee thanks for that.

As for the SDXC card slot - sigh, check the Disadvantages section at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ExFAT.

I will never buy this stupid 'upgrade'.

On my MBP 17" model 6,1 I see only two other resolutions besides 1920 x 1200: 1600 x 1200 (stretched) and 1600 x 1200. Does yours have 1920 x 1080, or are you playing your movies at the default resolution 1920 x 1200? If the latter, why wouldn't you expect that to work on the MBP 15" with Retina Display (ignoring, of course, the lack of a CD/DVD reader/writer)? I'm also not sure I understand your example of 5760 x 3840 pixel photos.

To clarify: If the Retina display operating in scaled resolution mode of 1920 x 1200 displays everything that the MBP 17" does exactly the way it does, only smaller, that's one thing. And if there are some things that it cannot display or displays differently than the MBP 17" does, that's another.

I've just read the a report about the Retina screen by somebody who bought the MBP 15" with Retina Display. He says that only very few apps have been modified to take advantage of the display, and that those that haven't been look worse than on a normal MBP 15".

Yes Richard, the same only smaller is exactly what im saying, thus whats the point. Your BR wont look any better as it already maxed under existing 17" resolution and even with a very average camera your stills will look no better. And yes exactly what you friend says very few apps will make use of it so whats the point. Ill strip my 17", put in a Corsair Force GT 240G SSD, max the ram and not waste any money on a shiny, smaller, essentially no better laptop. Maybe Apple will see the error of its ways and bring back a 17" that more useful for the end user, not simply bring out a shiny new mini version that offers the user nothing. Im playing an MMO at the moment, no resolutions greater than the existing 17" so even in gaming its wasted, and I definitely dont want to play on a smaller screen!

I agree. I'm soooo bummed about the 17". I need and love the extra real estate for work. 15" is too small for real work and ya, who's going to carry around an extra display? I'm also bummed about no optical drive. I like to watch DVDs when traveling or even just at home. I don't have TV and enjoy using my 17" to watch a movie without having to stream or download it. Apple has a God complex, for sure. Forcing us to use what they create because they discontinue what we love and have counted on as tools in our trade.

I too have been using the 17'' for quite some time now. I started on the 15'' unibody, but it was way too small for the work I do. The 17'' is great! And, it still has the expresscard slot, which I still use from time to time. I think it's weird for them to just drop it completely. I get that they want sell 15'' with a apple display, but I can't take an apple display with me on an airplane or a car ride, now can I? The 17'' MBP is smaller then any other 17'' laptop on the market, I don't need it any smaller. This whole thing stinks. Why hasn't anyone from apple commented on this?

Just so people know, you can still buy the latest/last 17"MBP, model 8,3 released late (Oct) 2011, from Apple. Look in the Refurbished section in the Apple store(lower left column under Special Deals). They have the same warranty as a new one and look like new with new power supply. I believe that various other stores still have new ones. Prices vary so shop around for the spec you want. I agree with many others and hope they will reconsider and release a new 17"model in the future, it may be a relatively small seller but has its uses.

EVERYONE fill out the FEEDBACK FORM and let them know you want it back! Let them know how much you need the real estate, how many you refer to the line, how many you've sold for them, how we're their original core user, etc. LET THEM KNOW THEY MUST BRING BACK THE 17" MBP.

Feedback registered. Good to see complaints are not one of the menu options. I listed it as a Bug. Afterall the decision is certainly bugged.
