panic(cpu 0 caller 0xffffff800064ba7b): "Unable to find driver for this platform: \"ACPI\"

I was recently installing updates on my MacBook Pro and during the installation process it came up with, "An unexpected error occurred, none of the updates were installed," and I was given the option of restarting my computer. I pressed restart and let it sit for a while, after approximately five minutes of nothing happening to restart the computer I turned it off at the power button. Upon turning it on again in the middle of the screen it came up with "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power Button until it turns off, then press the power button again. I've done this numerous times and I have encountered the same outcome each time. On the left hand side of the screen is as follows:

panic(cpu 0 caller 0xffffff800064ba7b): "Unable to find driver for this platform: \"ACPI'.\n"@/SourceCache/xnu/xnu-1699.26.8/iokit/Kernel/IOPlatformExpert.cpp:15 04

Can somebody tell me what has happened as I have absolutely no idea what it is or how to fix it.

Hello,

This fix is working for me.I'm currently running the updates but all my files, photos, music and applications are all there. Stupid T'bold update!

1) Hold in command-r while rebooting (or from cold start) to boot to the recovery partition.

2) Chose re-install mac osx

3) Enter appleID credentials

4) After the re-install is complete (may take a while depending on your intenet connection etc) all your files, preferences, and software will be there, you shouldn't lose anything.

5) DO NOT reattempt the Thunderbolt update. You can update the iPhoto and other updates that Software Update finds...just DO NOT check the Thunderbolt one or you will be at step one again.

I was in the same boat. Here's the least painful way to fix it based on the post by @mdoghri (thanks for the tip).

1. Download the Lion 10.7.4 Combo Update from here

http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1524

2. Burn this to a DVD or copy to some other external device like a USB drive

3. Hold down OPTION key while booting your mac. Lion has a recovery disk built in. Select it to boot into it.

4. Open the Terminal Utilities->Terminal

5. Type in df -h and press enter. Note the mount points and drives. One of them will be the disk that you put the Combo Update.dmg file on.

6. Mount the .dmg file by typing

hdiutil attach /Volumes/DVD-OR-EXTERNAL-DRIVE-WHERE-DMG-IS/MacOSXUpdCombo10.7.4.dmg

NOTE: You will see some checksums checks etc. The disk will get mounted and at the end it will show the mount point.

7. Type in

/Volumes/Internal\ HDD/usr/sbin/installer -pkg /Volumes/Mac\ OS\ X\ 10.7.4\ Combined\ UpdatePAckageName.pkg -target /Volumes/Internal\ HDD

NOTE: You will replace the values with whatever the DMG file was mounted on and at the end - most likely you will have /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD (this is your main drive).

IMPORTANT: Do not forget that you can use the TAB key to auto-complete the file/path names. So just type the first few letters and hit TAB to auto-complete. If it doesn't auto-complete - hit the TAB again in sequence to list possible options since there is more then one.

8. BE PATIENT. The update will take a while, but at the end it will say that update was successful.

9. Quit Terminal and go back to the main utilities screen where you can simply choose to close the window and it will ask you for the boot drive. Select your main disk drive and it should boot normally.

Hope this helps someone.

P.S. And people say Microsoft is bad. Imagine the number of drivers and third party devices they have to support for Windows. Apple has their own hardware and still manage to create a screwup like this - Sigh!

I faced the same problem after the initial update. I adopted BWGS's recommendation to chose to Reinstall Mac OS X. The Mac OS X Lion screen appears, and I chosed 'Continue'. The next pop-up says 'To download and restore Mac OS X, your computer's eligibility will be verified with Apple.', Again I chosed 'Continue'. The next screen shows 'Could not find installation information for this machine. Contact AppleCare.' with the OK button. When I click at the OK button, it returns to the Mac OS X Utilities menu. I am using a MacBook Pro 15" and I do not have a Time Machine Backup.

Can someone kindly advise. Thanks.
