panic(cpu 0 caller 0xffffff800064ba7b): "Unable to find driver for this platform: \"ACPI\"

I was recently installing updates on my MacBook Pro and during the installation process it came up with, "An unexpected error occurred, none of the updates were installed," and I was given the option of restarting my computer. I pressed restart and let it sit for a while, after approximately five minutes of nothing happening to restart the computer I turned it off at the power button. Upon turning it on again in the middle of the screen it came up with "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power Button until it turns off, then press the power button again. I've done this numerous times and I have encountered the same outcome each time. On the left hand side of the screen is as follows:

panic(cpu 0 caller 0xffffff800064ba7b): "Unable to find driver for this platform: \"ACPI'.\n"@/SourceCache/xnu/xnu-1699.26.8/iokit/Kernel/IOPlatformExpert.cpp:15 04

Hello Lieu Ann Yow,

I had the same mac like u, with OS X 10.6.8, as basic IOS.

When i got some troubles after installed lion , and some updates, am going to reinstall the lion through the option disk, when the mac start up. ( hold "alt" when rebooting)

I think, the easy way, is download a new copy of lion through the mac app store; to install the good version of 10.7.4 of lion, then I think all should be fine with your app.

PS: The solution that you told, is not mine, I found it here.

PS2: You need to download directly lion from app store with a good wifi signal, and any credentials (ID and PWD) which had been used to buy lion, before.

Hello Gkadjo,

Will do as you recommended. However, I have two questions which hope you can advice

a) Do the applications work fine after you reinstall the OS Lion?

b) When I installed the OS Lion previously, I purchased it online. If I am going to download a new copy of Lion through Apps Store, do I have to purchase again (assuming I am using the same Apple ID & PWD)?

Hi Lieu Ann Yow,

a) Do the applications work fine after you reinstall the OS Lion?

>> YES; lion, shall reinstall only the files system, so all app will work fine

b) When I installed the OS Lion previously, I purchased it online. If I am going to download a new copy of Lion through Apps Store, do I have to purchase again (assuming I am using the same Apple ID & PWD)?

>> NO, Os lion will be dowloaded for free, if you have any apple ID which bought lion

Hi Gkadjo,

Have to trouble you again. Currently I am on OS 10.6.8 after reinstalling from recovery CD following the crash cauesd by the thunderbolt update.

Based on your advice, I should go to Apple Apps Store to download the OS Lion 10.7.4 in order for my applications to work again. However, I discovered that the pre-requisite to install OS Lion 10.7.4 is the current systerm OS must be running Lion 10.7, in which my current system doesn't meet the requirement.

I tried to search on the web for OS Lion 10.7 which I think is the only version I can upgrade my current OS 10.6.8 but couldn't find any.

Kindly advice

I have this exact problem, but when I press "Command" + "r" nothing happens. But when I press shift at startup the "Unable to find driver for this platform" screen takes longer to pop up. But it still pop ups. Though when I press the option key at startup, the Macintosh HD icon pops up, but when I press it it again returns to the "Unable to find driver for this platform" screen.

Any other suggestions to solve this issue?

I have a 2010 MacBook Pro.

I had this same error /problem, and I initially thought it was a software problem from all the apple forums, but learned that in MY CASE it was in fact the hard drive cable, which was coming slightly loose upon moving the laptop... this happened after installing a new hard drive (memory upgrade). If you have this issue or continue having this issue, make sure that all your mounting screws are in your hard drive (especially after a hd replacement) and that your hard drive cable is not loose. Even if it becomes slightly loose upon moving, your computer will go back to a grey screen upon startup. A small amount of tape securing cable to hard drive seemed to fix the issue I was having (you must make sure there will be no loosening of the cable with movement, etc), but you may opt for a new hard drive cable. You can try saving any data on the drive, but then you must reinstall the hard drive and reinstall MacOS after using command +R and erasing the disk... same as before mentioned.
