Kernel Panic on 2012 MacBook Pro

I recently purchased a mid-2012 MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2.3 GHz, non-retina) and I have been receiving Kernel Panic error messages. The screen goes black with white text in multiple languages warning me to shut down my computer and the computer freezes.

I have called Apple customer service multiple times. We tried multiple things, including wipe the hard drive and reinstall OS X Lion, but I still get Kernel Panics.

One thing I did notice in the "send to Apple" report is that it mentions Google Chrome. It seems whenever I do get a Kernel Panic I am using Chrome.

So, my question is, has anyone else gotten a Kernel Panic who owns the new MacBook Pro?

Here are the applications I have installed (besides the default Apple ones):

  • Coda 2
  • Final Cut Pro X
  • Twitter
  • Google Chrome

Right now, as suggested by the second Apple associate, I uninstalled Google Chrome, to see if that was the cause. She says that it could be related to that or from a software update (which I doubt considering I have yet to install any updates since I reinstalled Lion).

Anyone else have the same issue? Thank you for your help.

It also says Apple is aware of the problem and is making a fix, "Planning on releasing a Patch" That is why I said if you actually read it. Not skipped over all the parts that you didn't agree with.

I'm on my Mac musiing chrome to read and reply to threads and have been for days, weeks and have not had any crashes. But then my Mac is a late 2011 model not one of the new ones.

Clinton you don't have one of the new ones, you have an older model, right? Do you use chrome? Has your Mac crashed lately?

it's good that they both are doing something to solve the problem (google kinda did it). But I don't see any reason for a company to make its OS compatible with one web browser no matter how popular is that (I'm using chrome btw). The people who wants to make apps should do it right and make it compatible. But Apple should have been straight to developers with any changes it made, new drivers, and new hardware to avoid these things. (Apple wanted to be a surprise and didn't tell anyone about it. Now it gets time to spread the word)

I don't know what Apple is going to release but the one that Google did kinda solved the problem even though it's not a final release.

The only thing that I'm little disappointed with Apple is why the world's most advanced desktop operating system broke like that over a web browser! instead of closing the broken app force users to restart the whole system! Did chrome really act like viruses or maleware! I don't think so. That's not something you call it the world's ... it should be reliable and stable.

So check your MBP 2012 before installing anything or migrate your files to make sure there is no image retention, kernel panic, etc. So you could be sure there is nothing wrong with your machine and no need to replace it. Just wait few more days maybe a week to see what Mountain Lion has for us.

Thanks for everyone here to making this problem more visible.

**(I'm sorry, I simply don't have enough time to read all 8 pages of this thread right now, so I apoligize if this has already been adressed, but....)**

It is NOT only Google Chrome.

I also just bought a Mid-2012 MBP (standard display // NOT retina display), and right out of the box had Kernel Panic Messages while using Firefox.

I very rarely use Chrome, but it is installed on my machine.

All of my reports say this, even if I wasn't actively using Firefox. It is often just running on my machine:

"BSD process name corresponding to current thread: firefox"

Message was edited by: slufter (to clarify that my MBP is NOT a retina model)

I don't remember each case, sorry. Facebook is the only site I can remember being on during a KP. (of course.. unfortunately, when am I not using FB!? : / )
I often have several tabs open on Firefox: gmail, facebook, flagstar (michigan bank site), etc... I hope that is of some help to you...

None of it will be of any help to anyone or you. It is the Mid 2012 Mac's that are the only computers having this problem. It is the Computer, Not the software installed or being used.

That is why there are 8 pages to this thread and many more threads on it.

Take it back for full refund and wait for Apple to fix the problem.

NO, I never use Chrome. It IS installed on my machine though, but the point of my original post was to share to everyone (after reading tons of comments that claim this problem is because of/or only happening with Chrome) that...

...Kernel Panics are NOT caused only by Google Chrome. That is just ONE —of at least two browsers— that cause the KP. In my situation FIREFOX causes the KP.

My other issue is that I bought this computer over 14 days ago in Michigan, and I left for Japan the next day. They deny my request for a refund because I am outside of the 14 days, even though it was impossible for me to return it. AHHH!

Some of you don't seem to understand what a kernel panic is. Google was saying the problem Chrome had with it was related to a resource leak. What you have to understand is that the 2012 MBPs have new hardware, therefore that likely means a new device driver for that new hardware. When dealing with an interaction between an application and hardware, resource problems can occur if the application is not managing it properly. It is also possible that the underlying issue can be fixed either in the device driver side, or in the application side (which is what Google did). If Chrome was having a problem with the new hardware, it does not surprise me if other applications might, as well.

In short, if you're having this problem, I still think you're far from screwed. It is most likely that Apple will issue a patch.

I got panics and with Chrome etc. The chap in the following thread gave some suggestions about graphics switiching under Lion causing an issue. Since I have fixed the graphics switching to not switch haven't had an issue since. This is to tie me over until ML is released where the graphics is fixed.

Have a look and see what you think.

cheers

Finally made the switch to a Mac in January. Bought a 15" MacBook Pro because I have the Bar Exam in late July (at the time this was months away, now it's in 10 days or so) and need a reliable computer. Out of the box it was crashing with a Kernel Panic. I took it to the Genius Bar and they reinstalled the OS (sorry I don't really know which one it was, definitely Lion but not sure if there's more info I should know like a version number) and over the next 6 weeks it crashed 4-5 times again with Kernel Panics. I brought it into the Apple Store again on Monday to get a hardware fix because I was told by the "Genius" the first time that if the software reinstall didn't help then it was a RAM or Hard Disk problem. They've had my comp since then and are putting it on release now because they reinstalled the OS and ran a 3 day stress test without recreating the KP.

I have the Bar in 10 days and obviously I am paranoid that it will crash during the Bar Exam--what advice do any of you guys have? I honestly am in way over my head with computer stuff in general (I mean, I'm 25 so I've grown up on comps and it isn't like I am clueless, just not particularly interested in them so I don't know much) and could use any advice you guys can offer on what to do.

Thanks in advance.
