Kernel Panic on 2012 MacBook Pro

I recently purchased a mid-2012 MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2.3 GHz, non-retina) and I have been receiving Kernel Panic error messages. The screen goes black with white text in multiple languages warning me to shut down my computer and the computer freezes.

I have called Apple customer service multiple times. We tried multiple things, including wipe the hard drive and reinstall OS X Lion, but I still get Kernel Panics.

One thing I did notice in the "send to Apple" report is that it mentions Google Chrome. It seems whenever I do get a Kernel Panic I am using Chrome.

So, my question is, has anyone else gotten a Kernel Panic who owns the new MacBook Pro?

Here are the applications I have installed (besides the default Apple ones):

  • Coda 2
  • Final Cut Pro X
  • Twitter
  • Google Chrome

Right now, as suggested by the second Apple associate, I uninstalled Google Chrome, to see if that was the cause. She says that it could be related to that or from a software update (which I doubt considering I have yet to install any updates since I reinstalled Lion).

Anyone else have the same issue? Thank you for your help.

I have had the occasional kernel panics and the situation where it seems to reset (like a logout and login) and switched over to fixing the graphics to use discrete and using Safari only. This seemed to fix the issues.

Interesting observation is that whilst I have been on holidays (last week), I have been running on Bootcamp (windows 7) continuously for gaming and the steam sales. Windows 7 has not missed a beat and no BSOD's so definately points to software as the issue. I have not rebooted at all in last week and Windows 7 happily sleeps and responds perfectly fine.

If there was a hardware issue, as some have pointed out could be, I would expect Windows to go bananas and fail all the time.

An update:

I actually called the Apple Store back that had my comp and told the manager that I had the Bar Exam coming up and did not think reinstalling the OS was going to solve anything, and that normally I would be ok with taking my chances but this is probably the only 3 day period in my life that I will absolutely NEED to feel like I can rely on my computer. The urgency combined with the ongoing problems and terrible customer service I experienced while my computer was at the Apple Store led to them giving me a new MacBook Pro (the list of issues is long but basically they didn't have any notes from the first software reinstall which is the only reason they bothered with trying that again, then I was told yesterday that software wasn't the problem and that a hard disk was on order, and finally today I was told that they don't know what is wrong with the computer).

Anyway, now that I have a new MacBook Pro and I am reading this thread, does it make sense not to install Flash at all on this computer until after the Bar? What precautions would you guys take to avoid a KP (assuming the problem is relatively universal with the mid '12 MBPs) for the next 2 weeks?

Again, thanks.

Obviously. But reading this thread, you'd think Chrome was the only possible reason why the new MBP would crash. When this many people are having KP with brand new computers, Apple obviously screwed up.

My KP happend sometime after I stopped using it; so I can't be that specific. Before I walked away I was watching netflix in Safari. I believe netflix uses Microsoft Silverlight; so that may have the same issues as Flash. I did find a Safari update that I didn't get an auto-notification for. I'm hoping this fixes the problem.

Who's running Windows 7 on their new MBPs? Does the same issue occurr with that?

If everyone's new MBP works fine running Windows, then we can only assume that its an Apple software problem that will be fixed soon?

May never be fixed if you don't upgrade to Mountain Lion. Apple is known for leaving older OS users is the dust.

Come now, let's not be so skeptical eh 😉

Lion is on version 10.7.4 at the moment, right? So there's most likely at least a 10.7.5 and 10.7.6 coming later.

Doubtful as the newer models was supposed to be released with ML pre installed but ML wasn't ready. Everyone knew Apple was coming out with a newer MBP/A versions and the sales for the 2011 models had dropped off. So they released the computer without the intended OS to go along with it. That is why they are giving ML away for all that bought the new models. The only time they give away the OS is IF you bought a Mac that came with an older OS AFTER the new OS came out. Not any computer before the OS came out.

If you were to buy a 2011 model today it would not include the free upgrade to ML.
