URL now requires .com to take me to a site

I have noticed in the last week or so that when I type in the just the name of a company or web site into the Safari url line, I am now taken to a search page and not to the company in question. The URL line now requires a .com or whatever to actually go to the site.

What's up with that?

How do I fix this incredibly annoying problem? Current version of Safari.

Thanks.

This is the only accurate response here. Safari autocompleted URLs under the assumption they started with http://www. and ended with .com. It's not a history or autocomplete thing. You could also make Firefox do that (and maybe still can - don't know, don't use it) by tweaking some hidden settings.

I really miss this. It was a productivity benefit of Safari and super nice to have in daily life. In fact, I put up with Safari being slower than Chrome for this reason alone. Now, Safari runs faster for me than Chrome does, but it lost this nice feature.

I'm guessing it's tough to do with omnibars since you can't tell if the person means to search for the term or go to the URL. There must be some clever way to solve for this.

Apple - PLEASE bring it back! Maybe make it an optional preference or something?

There is a Go To Site option that appears when you begin typing a URL into the new Smart Search Bar; it's second or third from the bottom of the suggestions that appear below the URL you are typing. Click on that or use the arrow keys to reach it and press Return to reproduce the behavior from Safari 5 and earlier (where it will append the http://www. and .com/). It would be great if Apple would supply a keyboard shortcut for that option, but for now this is what we've got.

Oka, so after 1-1/2 months of not having the aptly-described "auto-try" feature, which automatically and transparently would append "www." and ".com" to anything you typed into the old version's URL field, I finally got fed up enough with it to search for a solution. I now realize there isn't one.

Whoever said that the new "omnisearch" field is a solution looking for a problem was right. I'm not sure what the problem was with the old location and search fields being separate.

JamesonTivo correctly describes what is possible now, but there really should be a keyboard shortcut for this.

This change is making me consider other browsers, which is a bummer because I would like to see support for Safari grow.
