MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

I did the IR test for the second time and I see really a very very slight image retention. Here is the result.

Ghost persistence time: 01:50
Used gray tone: 90

Used pattern: Chessboard
Result code: T13000T2150P1G5aB100I0

I am really afraid if this gets worth after a while. I bought the machine three days before and I am still in the 14 days return time frame.

Possibly will get worse. When I didnt notice anything wrong with mine until about 2-3 weeks in. Now IR lasts around 5:30 mins using the test app. I started using my laptop on the 12th of July...so roughly 1 month and half.

Im so angry! going to try and keep calm when I go see a "genius" soon! 😠😠😠😠😠😠

It is likely to get worse. Please keep us updated as your rMBP ages and let us know if you see increased image retention.

I agree. My replacement unit has an LG screen, but no IR as of now. I will be sure to let you guys know if it shows up with time. If it does, I'm going right back to the apple store. The guys at my store were very helpful - I was definitely not expecting them to give me a new computer.

As for the Samsung vs LG screen in terms of quality - there isn't that great of a difference. I had them side-by-side and while the difference was preceivable, it was by no means dramatic. I'd be perfectly happy with either screen if IR wasn't an issue.

So am I still the only one who's been told to wait for Apple to figure out a software/frimware/driver fix? After repeated phone calls for 3 days in a row, I'm still told to wait. They won't replace.

By the looks of things, it seems replacing is a lottery indeed.

I was wondering if the Apple vs. Samsung lawsuit has had any effects on the supply of Samsung screens.

Anyone else who's been told to wait- please let us know.

I was told to wait for a firmware fix. I chose to return for a refund instead since they wouldn't replace the screen (and I was within the return period). I'm glad I returned because if I had done the screen replacement I probably would have gotten an LG and would have been past the return period and stuck.

well, here is an example of unacceptable daily use in the life of a non-photographer, non-videographer, yet pretty important to me.

Being reasonable and pointing out what the issue actually is and how it is likely to actually affect people is not 'naysaying'. It's being realistic.

Realistic is that we spent 2200+ for this laptop and it's screen is more pathetic than my 1650x1050, 6 year old dell display. That I let it set for 30+ minutes without any IR.

Stop being a fanboy, I love apple but they screwed up here. This laptop is great but hugely flawed.

Anyway, mine is setting at home but I won't be able to test it out until tomorrow, or maybe later due to this **** hurricane.

i add these characteristics seen on my terminal :

Color LCD

LP154WT1-SJA1

DCN22931LA6DMJ0AU

so it is an LG display built in: Week 6 (February) or week 33 (August), no IR till now (after 1 week of everyday normal use- browsing, video editing, watching movies, etc.)

Is there any other guy out there with similar code of display or all LG displays have the same code? Trying to figure out if all LG displays are the same or if they 've change sth after the first feedback of problematic displays..

I thought for sure that the guy at the genius bar was going to give me a problem (considering I bought the computer over a month ago). I showed him the IR (left mail open for 2min then switched to a grey screen. He immediately said that should not happen and it is unacceptable that it is. He then said that he would normally have the screen repaired, but he wouldn't want his month old computer to be repaired. So they gave me a new computer. LG screen, but no IR (as of now).

Forgot to mention, they used a thunderbolt cable to transfer all of my data to the new computer. It took 6min to transfer 112gb - gotta love thunderbolt and SSD drives!

Received my computer last monday. Been using it all day and everyday as much as I can. Least amount of use is 2 hours most is 6. Ill use it more when im back from vacation but at this point ive tried everything I can think of and atm this is probably the best LG screen ive heard of and can think of. I would love to keep this, but im also worried issues might crop up.

LG Screen

Week 33

T11459T2013P1G5aB60I0

Keep on using it, if issues do crop up its still under warranty. At times this thread seems to have some heated back and forth on this topic. Good thing is people are discussing this a bit more in depth.

How do you know what screen it is?

Open Terminal (Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal) and paste this string, then press enter:

ioreg -lw0 | grep \"EDID\" | sed "/[^<]*</s///" | xxd -p -r | strings -6

If the result starts with LP***** it's LG, if it stars with LSN***** it's a Samsung. Good luck!

I'm not being a fanboy. 'Hugely flawed' is, I think, an overstatement; but this is just my opinion, obviously.

It never ceases to amaze me how defensive people get when they are hysterical and others won't join in their hysteria. It's like a personal insult to them that anyone would try to have a level head about this issue.
