MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

It's so faint that I can only see it if I look closely on a solid medium to light gray color. It doesn't bother me since I don't notice it during regular usage. The ghosting did bother me. I'm on my third laptop, so I believe Apple has held up their end of the bargain by being helpful while I go through the in store return process and eventually getting me a not-quite-perfect but still nice display on an otherwise awesome machine.

I should also mention that my previous PC laptops had WAY worse backlighting inconsistency. I never noticed it being bad on my old Macbook Pro, but it could be just the same as this one for all I know.

While Apple customer service is still top notch, albiet not as consistant person to person, the fact is that sales are way up and they are relying on to many vendors to source all these parts. I got a new MacBook Air a few weeks ago and sat it down next to my 13 in 11 month old MBA and wow, what a difference. My 13 inch had a wonderful colorful screen and my 11 inch has a dull yellowish screen. Replacement on the way. I ran this command on both machines and it looked like my 13 inch had a Samsung and my 11 inch, who knows what...

ioreg -lw0 | grep IODisplayEDID | sed "/[^<]*</s///" | xxd -p -r | strings -6

Would be interesting to see owners of rMBPs to run this command and see which manufacturers are making the bad displays.

This thread somewhat the idea of getting a rMBP for me right now. I want one, but look what I'm going through just to get a MBA? I buy Apple products because they are supposed to be high quality, but instead it looks like a lottery process now.

At least we still have Apple Care... they will always make things right and the customer happy.

It's always a lottery, with any company. You have a better chance of winning with Apple. I've been a long time PC user, and I'm making the leap of faith and switching to OS X very soon when I buy a MBP. There are a lot of things that convinced me to switch. AppleCare is one of them. They will make sure you are satisfied even if it takes a one or even two replacements. Quality control is extremely difficult. No one can get it exactly right. This is more evident in the PC industry, but in the PC industry you have to seriously fight for companies to uphold their warranty and provide an exorbitant amount of evidence. Apple is awesome because I can drive 5 minutes to my Apple retail store, show them the problem in person, and walk out with a solution.

Switched in 2000, never looked back and yes... Apple Care and Support is second to none. They will do whatever it takes to get it right. Thats why i stay with them, but it's getting to be a little extreme lately. I have had a lot of Apple buys go wrong, even my girlfriend noticed, and she never notices the coming and goings of my devices. Really hope Apple can figure out how to help their vendors increase their QC so they can get some more uniformity across their new products.

As far as the LCD command, it's very possible that something is different with the Reinta display.

I don't think anyone can say that. It seemed that it was a bad batch and like the way that all people came here to report the issue and say they have a same problem, now they are starting to leave this topic like it doesn't happen anymore.

I guess the replacements were good and the new ones don't have this issue anymore. We can say it was a bad batch but nobody can say that officially.

I didn't see any one with this problem after week 26 (i mean in here).

Best of luck.

The issue is still happening. I don't think Apple's fixed this problem yet. My first rmbp had a very noticeable cosmetic imperfection on the palm rest, my replacement arrived on July 16.

Checking with terminal, it says my LCD is a LG/Sharp. After leaving a page on for 15 minutes and closing it, the white areas on the pages is very noticeable against the dark grey background. This is making me paranoid about getting another replacement cause I'm not sure the next is one will be any better.

Just left the genius bar and they ran a screen test and they said they need to order me a replacement screen. I asked about getting a new laptop but because I have had it over a month, they are going to just replace the screen. I actually like that idea better so I don't need to de-authorize all my software and migrate all my crap again.

My build was June, week 24 and I ordered it online.

Hopefully, this does the trick. I actually debated whether or not this screen persistance bothered me enough to take it in. I only notice it when I am trying to make it happen and probably would never see it in my day to day routine. I figured I would see what apple had to say and in glad the screen is getting replace in the end. Something in their test flagged that it needed to be replaced so there you go.

Cheers!

I just noticed this problem on my own MacBook Retina.

If it affects all current Retina screens, then I highly doubt it's a problem Apple will be able to fix until the next generation of screens, but I'm able to quickly resolve it by putting up a white screen at full brightness for just a few seconds (15-20 seconds).

This is definitely not something you'd expect from the most high-end laptop in the world, but I'm not going to let it spoil anything for me. It only occurs when a static high-contrast image is on screen for an extended period, and it can be quickly and easily "flushed" by just putting up a white screen for a few seconds. *shrug* It *****, but it's livable.

Still, if anyone knows if there are absolutely screens (by mfr or batch) that don't have the problem, then I'll definitely trade my Mac in for a replacement.

I would keep bringing it back... it's not acceptable and we are not beta testers. My hopes are pinned on ML and bad batch theroy, I think that 10.8's new graphic capabilities will allow the rMBP to work as Apple designed. As soon as this thread is dead, I'll buy the rMBP. As I write this, I'm waiting for DHL to arrive with my replacement MBA 11 inch, since the one they shipped me has a yellow tinted warm display. The Apple display woes continue on various fronts ...
