MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

A thread on MacRumors states that your screen is LG.

Hey all,

There has been a command-line method for checking the model # of the LCD in the system that has been floating around for a while, and as people have been trying it on the new Retina MacBook Pro, they've been discovering that it only ever spits out "Color LCD" as an identifier.

I've determined that if you modify the command slightly, you can get the system to give up the model number of the display. Simply replace the IODisplayEDID part of the command with \"EDID\" like so:

Code:

MacBook-Pro:~ root# ioreg -lw0 | grep \"EDID\" | sed "/[^<]*</s///" | xxd -p -r | strings -6 Color LCD LP154WT1-SJA1 DCN2253002BDMJ0AE

My guess is that all of the displays currently shipping on rMBP are the same make and model (LG Philips), but it would be interesting to see if anybody else gets different results on their system.

I would safely assume that it is LG.

Hi mate,

I tested again this time 40 minutes with full screen Mail and high brightness. Two desktops with two different backgrounds (light gray and dark gray). couldn't find anything.

I did run the command line and this is what I've got:

LSN154YL01001

People said LP = LG LSN = Samsung.

So far so good. Check the closing lid issue with Xcode open and chrome with safari. I plugged keyboard and turned Caps Lock on. After closing lid, after 15 sec the light went to off. Guess it went to sleep. (If I'm not mistaken)

Hopefully Week 30 is a batch safe if we don't see any defective one here.

Hi all. My rMBP is scheduled to arrive today but apparently DHL got delayed and i think they will deliver it to me tomorrow. I would like to ask if there is any change of setting required to prevent the screen from turning off after some time, in order to test the retentivity issue? One more question, how do i check the make of the LCD? Seems quite complicated to me, it would be good if someone can explain it to me in detail. Thanks in advance.

I do remember some people (Mac Rumor) went to some madness and just returning their machine (MBA) to get one made by Samsung (I think it was SSD I can't remember).

But at the end if we trust Apple, we should give them a benefit of a doubt that they will give us good stuff. I hope yours as well be without any problem. Mine is too soon to say it's the perfect one. At least for now the defective LCD is out of the list. Lets give it some time.

I'll keep you guys posted if I find out something.

That sounds very promising... I'm really happy for you. It's getting really hard to get a Mac as Apple designed these days. I got a MBA 11 inch a few weeks ago and it had a sharp but dull screen, got a replacement and it has a bright but washed out display, and so now I'm dealing with someone higher up at Apple Care. I actually don't care if my LCD is samsung, lg, or whomever.. i just care that it's colorful, bright, and sharp. It does seem tho that Samsung is the screen of choice... my 13 inch MBA has a samsung and the screen is beautiful.

After running the terminal command mentioned earlier, it looks like my faulty screen is LP154WT1-SJA1 - so like everyone else with issues, LG.

FYI - I took my custom-to-order MBPR to the Apple store, and while they COULD just repair the screen, they urged me to call Apple Care and ask for a replacement instead since mine is less than a week old (currently Apple Stores aren't equipped to replace made-to-order MBPRs).

For anyone else who ordered a customized MBPR from Apple.com - the number is 1-800-MY-APPLE.

I'm calling now.

Apparently (from what I was told), because I ordered a customized system, I have to call and ask for replacement (the Apple Store is capable of ordering a replacement SCREEN and doing that repair)... but the Genius said that if it were him, he'd call and get a brand new one instead (they can't provide custom built replacements in-store... yet).

Now the frustrating thing is that I'm on the phone with Apple Care right now and they're giving me a hard time about replacing it (they are insisting I take it BACK to the Apple store to be "serviced"), and all this is despite the fact that the Genius at the Apple Store just convinced me to call and ask for a full replacement instead.

*sigh* I'm starting to get really mad, actually.

Update:

Got off the phone. Eventually Apple Care sent me on to Customer Service and they're expediting me a replacement that should arrive later this week. I'm glad they did the right thing - the only reason I'm remotely comfortable being an Apple early adopter is the fact that they ultimately haven't let me down when I've had quirky hardware problems. That doesn't mean I haven't gotten the occassional unhelpful Genius (*cough* Brea *cough*), but it always turns out well in the end. And that level of service is why I keep buying Apple.

I'm guessing people with Samsung screens aren't going to go looking for this thread... since, you know, they aren't having problems. :-)

Fun fact: LG was also the responsible party when some of the first batches of iPad 2 screens had light bleeding problems. With this track record, I wouldn't be surprised if LG was also responsible for the intermittent screen discoloration problems when the iPhone 4S launched. It seems pretty clear that LG's production and quality control processes just aren't cutting it.

But still, I'd like to see this confirmed too... if the folks with no problems are sporting Samsung screens.

Hi folks,

I've got the Samsung one like I said before. I ran the test for 30 and 40 minutes. Didn't see anything. It's week 30.

I don't even have the other issues like graphic glitches or KP and I've installed almost everything that could be a problem.

Well this is it. But I have sth else that makes no sense 😀

We'll see what happens after few hrs with ML
