MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

Alright guys, here goes:

So I mentioned yesterday to you that I called them. They told me yesterday that it would have to be taken to an Apple store to get it checked that there was indeed screen burn. I told them that I was still within the 14 day return policy but they still said that's all that could be done.

Today, I called them again, because I did start to notice screen burn again. They put me on hold, and after talking to a senior advisor, they gave me 2 options. 1. Do an advanced replacement over the phone. I really wanted to do this with them becuase it would save me time and hassling, but it required a credit card number, and since my dad wasn't in the house, I wasn't able to do this. So option 2. This was to take it to the store still, and they would basically schedule an advanced replacement over there. I shouldn't have to prove anything that it is occuring (becuase the screen burn comes and goes) but if they do find reasonable doubt, then I was to give them the case number of the conversation I had on the phone. Make sure you get a case number from them.

So that's my story. I'm scheduled to take it in next Friday. BTW- an advanced replacement means that they will let you use your defective one while they priority order you a new one. When the new one comes in, they will call and email you and let you know that it's in and available for pickup at the store.

A couple of pages back, I reported that my LG screen was fine, but it has now shown to be faulty with flickering and a very minor case of retention. Very dissapointed but went ahead to call 1800MYAPPLE. The rep tried to help me fix my problem with various methods such as resetting the PRAM and such. In any case, none worked, and the rep suggested for me to make an appointment with my nearest Apple Store, which I did. Unortunately, the Apple Store didn't provide an option to send me a replacement while I held on to the defective one. They gave me a choice of 2 options.

  1. Hand over the rMBP and have them purchase me a new one to have it shipped to my door.
  2. Spend another ~3k and wait to receive the new one before returning my defective one.

Neither of which I wanted to do. I cannot hand over the laptop and wait another week or two as a new one is built and shipped to me; I have work to do. I also don't have the kind of money to just purchase another expensive rMBP like that. So I called 1800MYAPPLE again, and after 2 transfers and being put on hold for a while (totaled up to be 41 mins) the Senior Advisor set up a replacement for me that will be built in priority, and shipped expidited once I ship my defective unit back. They said that once they confirm that it's on its way back to Apple, they will go ahead and send me a new replacement. I was told that this was as close as I can get to limiting the number of days I am without a machine. What other choice was there than to accept?

This morning, I checked my email, but was not able to find the label they were supposed to send me in order to ship my rMBP back to Apple, so I gave them another call, except this time, I called 1800APLCARE. During my call, I immediately provided the case # from my previous call and was immediately transfered to another Senior Advisor once the rep saw that a previous Senior helped me the day before. I told the Advisor what the problem was, and also requested for an "advanced replacement" (where I get to keep the defective unit until the replacement arrives). He put me on hold for a few minutes before transfering me to the online sales department, where someone was finally able to get an "advanced replacement" set up for me. He told me that the conditions of my rMBP were considered as "dead on arrival" and a replacement will be shipped out as soon as possible. He also mentioned that I wouldn't need to send my defective unit back until I received the new one and gave me his personal phone number in case I had any more concerns regarding my case. So now I play the waiting game, and hope my new model has no issues or defects.

If Apple refuses to do such a replacement for you, AND you are still under the 14-day return policy, then call 1800APLCARE and NOT 1800MYAPPLE. Apple Care will most likely get you a replacement in a manner that is most convenient for you or as close as possible. If you are past the 14-days, I suggest you request for one anyway, but you will most likely have to send your unit back before they send you a new one. I will update further once I receive my replacement.

Alright guys, I just confirmed that I have a LG screen using the terminal command posted earlier. My machine was manufactured week 31 (July) and I received it on July 30th. I've heard about the display burn-in issue before making my purchase online but I went ahead and got myself one anyway. In any case my screen doesn't experience any IR issues whatsoever. It has been day 2 now, but I will report back if I ever see the slightest IR on my display.

I would just like to let people know that I don't believe the problem has anything to do with the manufacturer, but rather the QC of the laptop itself. Apple has probably caught on by now and have made arrangements to fix the IR problem. Like I said before, I have a LG screen as my Retina Display, and it is absolutely gorgeous with no flaws or dead pixels. I just wanted to throw this out there so people don't need to discriminate against the brands and feel the need to return/replace/exchange their perfectly fine rMBP with one that has a specific model no. display.

Please note I'm NOT saying that you WON'T get a faulty display, but if you get a new batch, it will most likely be fine.

and I said you were wrong.

yes you can check by calling apple with your serial number on your invoice. that's what i did.

So if they tell you that you have the LG screen, what do you do? If you say you want the Samsung, will they make it happen?

If you have the money I would say just immediately order another one online and return the LG screen once you get it. If not, wait til you get the computer and call 1800APLCARE and tell them you have ghosting issues and want an "advanced replacement."

Have a week 32, 2.6/16/512 set to deliver this coming week. I tried calling Apple Support to see if it was an LG or Samsung - after a lengthy time of checking he insisted it was neither, but an Apple Cinema Display. 😉 No idea how you got them to tell you the specific manufacturer as they seem about as knowledgable as what they read on the Apple Store website.

No, he was trying to prove that he warned me. And I'm not saying that LG isn't without its flaws, I just followed up with an update to my experiences with this rMBP and the replacement process. My case has convinced me that many LG screens are faulty. I'm trying to contribute (not saying Jerbz doesn't), rather than taking someone's old post to prove how they were wrong.

Here are teh exact words I would say.

"Hi, I'm calling because this is my **th computer and everytime I keep getting an LG and it always ends up having IR issues. I would like to tell you my serial number and then get the manufacturer of the display for my Retina Macbook Pro."
