MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

Yeah, unfortunately a lot of problems with image retention developed months later and many people were denied replacements because the image retention wasn't severe enough.

That really is awful. I went through three of the previous generation 13" models. I checked them right away, and luckily the image retention was apprent right from the start. The "geniuses" did give me a hard time, so eventually I just said F it and returned the 3rd one to wait for a refresh. God I hope my 13" arriving tomorrow doesn't have IR.

It looks like they're at least using a different iteration for the new model. Its unfortunate that they're still pushing out defective units. I can understand some IR units going out, but a gradient from left to right is simply unacceptable. My 3rd display had that problem and it looked absolutely terrible. There is hope. My 4th display is the SJA2 and it's perfect: no ghosting, gradients or yellow.

At least someone has one without issues, that's good to know I was starting to wonder if all the machines had these issues. That at least gives me some hope.

I'm off to the Apple Store in the next hour to get a replacement, I'll update once I return. As I mentioned earlier I intend to check it in the shop as I'm sick and tired of going in and out of town....hopefully I can walk away with one that looks as it should!!

The SJA2 displays are not all fault free unfortunately.

This Macbook Pro 15 Retina (bought Jan 2013) with SJA1 developed bad image persistence. Took it back to the genius bar, and the display was replaced with an SJA2 about 3 weeks ago.

Now, this SJA2 is not displaying image persistence yet, it did have a yellow tint which was corrected using a display calibrator (Xrite i1Display calibration hardware).

But... this new SJA2 has a non uniform gradient colour shift going from top left corner to bottom right corner. Top left is slightly pinker, and bottom left is slightly yellower. The SJA2 also has horizontal banding luminosity shifts from darker to lighter in horizontal "waves". It is noticeable on a solid grey or light coloured background colour. No hardware calibration is going to fix a non-uniform display.

Running a display uniformity report with the i1Display calibrator shows luminosity shifts of up to 20% on different parts of the screen.

So taking it back to the genius bar tomorrow... it's a pain having to travel back to the store several times, but this thing cost over £3K so it will keep going back until fixed.

Hi tkxdev,

Would you mind posting the results of the terminal command so that we all know which Samsung Screen part you have.

have a samsung display in it, no tints, no other issues.

I may be wrong but it looks like there is a new part for the Samsung Screen in the recent rMBP refresh. Thanks.

Okay so I went to the Apple Store and said I wanted a replacement which they did. Opened it up in the store, quickly set up an account and still the same problem. Handed it back, said I wanted another one which they did...BUT...they said they are running out of this model so wouldn't be able to offer another until a new delivery came in. I said I would take it home and if the problem still persists I would leave it for a week to see if by chance the gradient went away...they mentioned the glue story!

Got it home, quickly set up an account and BOOM, there it is! Still the same issue. On another note I checked 2 machines on display and they also had the same problems.

What I would like to say is that the problem is very mild in comparison to the older models. You do have to look closely to see it but it's definitely there. I'm not suggesting that someone who has the new model has not got the issue but I've now checked 5 machines and all have suffered with it. If you have a new model and think it's not there it may be because the last models were so bad it was incredibly easy to spot but this one is vastly improved.

I find the easiest way to check is either create a white blank canvas in Photoshop and then drag the canvas over to the right and then slowly drag it back to the left and when you look closely you'll see a curtain effect where the left is suddenly not as white as the right. You can do the same with your email as well, drag it from the right to the left and you should notice it.

As I said it's so much better than the last models and the colour of the display is decent, not like that horrible yellow that was supposed to be white! Apple have clearly done something but it's still not 100%.

I'm not sure what to do now as I love the performance of these machines. Depending on how it goes in the next week I may take it back again but I've kind of got to the stage where I'm sick and tired of going backwards and forwards and not only that but it seems to be taking up a big chunk of my life so I may just accept that's how the screens are!

I took my Retina into the Apple store and was offered a screen replacement due to my IR. Another issue that I have noticed is that the LED backlighting produces a faint but audible hissing sound when the brightness is turned down very low (1-3 notches). Does anyone else's Retina exhibit this problem? I spoke to Apple customer relations about receiving a new replacement Retina but they said that they would have to replace the screen at least once before they would think about a complete replacement. My IR has gotten to the point where its driving me crazy. I have attached a photo showing the IR that occured while writing this post.
