MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

Censorship? Seriously dude? If Apple WAS censoring this discussion do you think it would have gone over 100 pages, much less 600+? brdeveloper was suggesting a class action lawsuit, do you really thing Apple will (or should) allow their boards to be used to organize a suit agains them? Get real.

You want to talk and complain about the issue, do it here, looks like those are being allowed. You want to organize a lawsuit, poll or petition? Go somewhere else. Those are against the ToU and Apple has shown they will pull those.

Enjoy.

They have censored other stuff too. Blanket statement. And pull the wool over your eyes off. Just their very stating it's a non issue is a censorship of the truth. But keep the rose colored lenses on.

There are varying degrees of censorship as opposed to your black or white viewpoint. I'm merely saying they frequently exercise the right to remove material from the thread. I get confused by who is defending apple here or the consumer sometimes. I'm for the consumer as I don't have billions in my account. I work hard for my money, and want my money's worth. And when I have all my software in a particular OS, it's not too much to ask to get at least the same level of quality as the computer I am replacing.

I understand Apple pulls the plug if someone wants to kick start a lawsuit here.

Anyway I do not think the entire thread will hurt Apple in any way.

My brother his fiancee just bought a new iPad mini even though I tried to convince them - by pointing them to the Mac Rumors discussions - to look elsewhere. Sure the Apple employee in the store claimed there is zero proof that IR has ever happened to any of the iPad minis and no one has ever returned one because of that.

My brother is happy with his 13" MBPr late 2013 (he assured me there is no IR or yellow tint except for the occasional keyboard freeze). I am even responsible that he has turned to an Apple convert coning from Windows cos the MBPr was gift from me back in November 2013.

Not every screen has an issue that apple sells. I had the 2012 mid 15'' macbook pro with retina which had IR issues and apple gladly replaced it without an issue. I recently purchased the 2013 15'' retina pro and to my dismay there were dead pixels on it. Again, apple swapped it with no issues. So now on this new one I haven't seen any issues despite it being an LG screen.

It's kind of like a lottery but not every LG screen is bad, because this one certinately isn't. It should be LG's responsbility to fix it in the end.

And your replacement displays weren't yellow tinted?

I mean how can I tell? I did have a samsung screen with my last device and haven't noticed too much of a change here. If it is a slight yellow tint it doesn't bother me. My whites look white and my black look black.

You guys can be the judge

PS - does apple even sell retina's with the samsung screen now? I heard they were considering dropping them as a retina supplier a few months ago

Well it should be very easy to tell. You had a first display with image retention but I'm pretty sure that most or all of the displays with image retention have great colour. So you removed that one and got a new display. You would immedately see a difference in colour as many have reported when their image retention display was replaced. Or maybe your previous Samsung display was also yellow. Or you can compare your new display to other displays on other computers or to phones or tables. Or you could bring in your new display to an Apple store to compare with other units on display. Your posted picture is definitely yellow. It's better to have a photograph with two displays in the shot for comparison but those whites aren't white; they're yellowy white. So I don't think it's true that there are any good displays; either it has image retention or it's yellow, generally. There may be displays with neither image retention or yellowing but maybe they have stuck pixels or muras. But maybe the yellow displays don't bother you. OK. Fine. But for many who had their image retention display replaced they were disappointed with the yellow replacement.

I did check the models of all the computers I went through.

RMBP 2012 w/ image retention - LG display

RMBP 2012 w/ no image display and no issues AFAIK - Samsung display

RMBP 2013 w/ dead pixels and no image retention - LG Display

RMBP 2013 no image retention (what I have now) - LG Display

Now I can't say the second 2012 really had any issues. It had some slight bleeding around the edges but hey I'd take that over what it could have been. Now the macbook im on now, I never thought of it looking real yellow compared to my samsung screen. The colors are definetely a bit warmer but I never got that yellow vibe. I'll have to compare it.

Sure. Honestly I'm not sure if I'm a fan of the super white gamma though. Might change it to something in the middle.

First one is the original image

second is with the the white gamma adjusted (I didn't feel the actual colors needed changing)

ETA - Something odd I should probably mention is my screen model is different than most of the 2012 models giving issues. Don't know if that has anything to do with anything but thought I'd throw it out there. (LP154WT1-SJE1)

I don't understand. Gamma affects the contrast and brightness, not the colour. Your second image looks like you set the native white point to 7000 or 7500 or 9300. It still looks terrible because now your whites are blue instead of yellow. You don't want blue whites or yellow whites you want white whites which some of the rare good displays did very well and usually those displays also developed image retention.

Its unfortunate these photos I'm taking looks nothing like the actual color reproduction on the screen itself. (Can we blame the iPhone there too? 😝)

And sorry I didn't mean gamma. It was the target white spot. I agree the photo is too blue, but unfortunately that's a big overexaggeration because of the photo itself. If I set my target white spot to roughly 7500 it looks pretty solid. I haven't tried messing with target/native gamma but that might be worth a shot too. When I opened up that it strained my eyes heh.

Well I think we've established that you have one of the yellow displays. I have one too and I set my white point to 7000 so that it looks hideously blue instead of hideously yellow because that makes it less horrible. But not all the screens are like this; some of them look amazingly white just leaving it at 6500 like the first display I had.

I'm just amazed you can notice it so much. I'm a web developer/designer major and it doesn't really bother me like that. I am slightly tempted to go back and return it but probably wont because chances are it will be another LG display. With that said I think my old samsung display might of been leaning more towards the blue side even though I haven't heard anyone complain about that.
