MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

I just got off the phone with Apple Care - They are sending me a replacement unit for my custom build. Should be here in a bit over a week.

The rep did mention that they are monitoring issues with the displays - they did not mention that the issues had to do with ghosting, which is interesting. I pointed them to this thread and they put me on hold for a while (about 5 minutes) and got back on the phone and issued me a new MBP. No cross shipping or anything, straight replacement.

Hopefully the new one that comes in will have a samsung display.

Were you within the 14 day Return period or are you out of it?

By analyzing this last update of faulty or perfect display stats, it's pretty clear where we're headed. So far NO faulty Samsungs and besides weeks 27 and 28, all weeks have multiple faulty LG displays.

This is the update so far:

LG week unknown (8x)

LG week 23 (2x)

LG week 24 (2x)

LG week 26 (4x)

LG week 29 (2x)

LG week 30 (2x)

LG week 31 (2x)

LG week 32 (3x)

LG week 33 (2x)

Unknown week 24

LG week unknown

LG week 26 (3x)

LG week 29

LG week 33 (2x)

Samsung week unknown (2x)

Samsung week 30 (2x)

Samsung week 32

Samsung week 33 (2x)

Find out your build week: http://www.appleserialnumberinfo.com/Desktop/index.php Put the serial in the top left corner bar

Find out your display manufacturer: Open Terminal, copy & paste:

ioreg -lw0 | grep \"EDID\" | sed "/[^<]*</s///" | xxd -p -r | strings -6

and then press Enter. If the result starts with LP it's an LG, if it starts with LSN it's a Samsung.

I received my rMBP yesterday, so yeah, within the 14 day return... but I also bought AppleCare-

I also just want to point out that being nice goes a long way. Don't abuse the tech on the phone. They didn't build the machine or QA it. Be calm, nice, chat a bit and hopefully everyone will be understanding and you will get a replacement shipped out.

Now, I can't really say how calm I'll be if I have to keep doing this, but for now - it worked out.

@orangeApple77

i hope you are joking...

if i use a pc, especially with ide like a Xcode, but also anotoher type of use (write text, read text, surfing web etc), i keep the window open also for some hours.. So 20-30 min are nothing!

i understand if the problem appear after 2 day but no in some hours and absolutely no in 30 mins.

i noticed IR issuse only in my iPad 2, rMbp with LG screen (for now, i wait for replacement) and in some pcs at work, but that stay open every day, all day with only one program, and after some year this can happen, but no in a new screen after 20-30 mins...

I did say that I totally agree that it shouldn't occur. I have had Apple force a defective iMac on me for like 9 months and had to haul it in 5 times. My real point is that they will get less and less willing to comply as this progresses. You will even wonder if it's in your head. I am the problem here? Maybe I'm defective? Someone pointed it out earlier in this thread. "Let's see if we can fix your problem", "I am sorry our product doesn't meet your expectations". (that it not be defective? yes that is my expectation) That is classic Apple Senior advisor talk and it was my nightmare for like 9 months. Anyone else who has experienced this knows what I mean.

My real point was that if you tell them you left if for thirty minutes they will likely act like you are the problem and be less helpful. I was just trying to advise what not to say to get the best service. Obviously, a screen is meant to display things and any retention at all should not occur. That's why it is so crazy that Apple doesn't properly recognize the problem and we are left trying to explain something so obvious.

and you should complain if that is you case. there should be no retention. it's also frustrating to see this issue of display and ad models using superior screens and then shipping with low quality screens. of course apple reserves the right to do this.

Just got my rMBP two days ago. No luck! Just change wallpaper to solid grey and open some white background windows for 10 mins. It is there! Even i had closed the lid and repower on. It is still there! I can not bear this ^%#@.

Going to return it and wait to see when will apple solve this.

Can you please tell us manufacturer and week build?

Maybe 3 hours but 30 minutes it's so obvious for a professional people who paid that much money for a professional machine. Even 3 hours not something that I can accept. But yes sounds crazy if you say that you left your monitor for 3 hours without any movement. (Still a problem and if I found out somehow I will change it anyway)

I think we(Customers) should be more worried about ourselves than themselves(Apple). We are already done our job and that was paying the money. Now they should their job.

Stand up for what you deserve. Not more not less. Now it's your choice. I say don't even care about what you hear and what you see and do the right thing even if you have to call the entire Cupertino.

Best of luck.

Hello all,

I'm in the Apple Store in Montreal and I just dropped my rMBP with my faulty LG screen (week 23) for repairs (already in the count I think).

So I'm hoping for a Samsung too...

FYI I just tested two random rMBP on display at the Store, and lo and behold:

Week 23 with LG: ghosting after 5 minutes using dark grey background and some windowed apps

Week 23 with Samsung: zero issues after 15 minutes, same test...

Both are stock configs btw

Those darned LG screens grrrr...
