MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

Finally!! after 54 days of waiting for 2.7/16/768 it arrived with a Samsung display and no IR whatsoever:

Color LCD

LSN154YL01001

DLM230400KTF49HBP

And this was the first order!

When I was picking it up another guy just refused his custom build just because it had an LG display even if the reseller tested it with us for 15 minutes with the checkered pattern and there was no IR on the LG panel. He said that after reading this thread he didn't trust an LG panel anymore and that he did not want to wait for a replacement. So he got his money back! bye-bye Apple for another customer.

Seriously if mine had an LG display I've done the same money back thing and buy another brand.

Good luck for everybody out there!

My first rMBP (LG screen) developed some pretty bad IR, to the point where it was noticable after 5 - 10 minutes on the ML space wallpaper.

I got a replacement from the apple store which is also an LG, tested it the first day and couldn't see any IR, but now after about 3 days I can see very faint IR on the gray background. I'm pretty upset that two screens have had this issue so far. I'm not sure whether or not to try to get another replacement from apple or to just wait it out and see if they come out with a fix/recall.

So my worst fears have been confirmed and I am just about to call Apple to arrange my return and full refund! After 4-5 days of having an apparently IR free LG screen (albeit with a yellow tint which in itself I was not happy about) I have just tested it again and I now have IR after a 10 minute checkerboard test. I honestly believe it is only going to continue to worsen, so there is no way I am keeping this now.

I will ask when I phone about the whole situation, see if they have any updates and whether I can request a samsung screen, but more than likely I will just be waiting a few months now to see what Apple do about this MESS. What a disappointment - I waited to buy my first mac since Christmas, and now this major let down. Not what I expected from Apple. Will post back with any useful info I acquire.

What's really disappointing is that on this new display I probably would never have noticed the IR unless I was specifically looking for it. It's definitely visible on my replacement machine too, albeit showing up after a longer period of time ~30 minutes.

I could live with the current level of IR, but I'm afraid it will get worse in time, after my 14 days are up. I really don't want to play retina roulette and keep asking for replacements until I get a samsung though, that seems pretty ridiculous.

Has anyone here had success requesting a replacement with a samsung display specifically? If so, what did you say/how did you go about it?

Aug 21, 2012 12:01 PM in response to mittense

Yep. After 7 days with a seemingly LG display, I too can confirm that it's there and it seems to get worse even. I will have to return this one again and most likely ask for my money back. I've had 5 rMBP and ever single one of them had either dead pixels or dust or scratches and IR. Most had all of the issues mentioned. I'm an Apple supporter, but this is just sad. At this price point this is insane.

Just got off the phone to Apple to arrange my return. They said there was no way to request a samsung - it would be pot luck, so I decided to just return it rather than play the replacement "lottery". But a few other people have recently said that they have been promised a samsung replacement... I will be interested to hear what happens with these. I've just had enough of this now - I really feel for those of you on your 4th, even 5th LG replacements.

Well I just got off the phone with someone from Corporate Executive Relations and I was told that my LG screen that gets IR in 5 minutes is within specification. I tried to tell him that I had seen the Samsung display and it did not experience these problems and he still told me that even if i sent it in for repair that they would not change the display since it is within specification. He suggested that I purchase the extended AppleCare just incase it became worse to the point were it is out of specification later on.

Well my first replacement arrives tomorrow. If this has the same problem (or those some of you have had with dust or dead pixels etc), I will return it and ask for a refund.

I am seeing far too many here getting multiple bad replacements, I am not willing to waste my time if Apple can't even be bothered to do a bit of extra inspection on replacements before they are shipped out to ensure the issue raised is not repeated.

Sad, I thought Aplle rated quality above everything (and was how they justified their high prices compared to similar specced competing products)

What a joke! This is complete BS. I am getting more and more angry about this. How is it fair that some people are getting samsung screens, and the rest of us have to go throw all this crap. Don't get me wrong, I'm pleased for those who have managed to win the "lottery" and get the screen they deserve, but this lack of QC and consistency is simply shocking. APPLE SORT THIS MESS OUT!!!

Aug 21, 2012 12:20 PM in response to dpweiland

What country are you in ? This seems a different response to that many of us have had (I am uk and it took all of 5 minutes for them to agree and arrange a replacement)

Worrying that Apple may be about to start to defend a sub-standard performance.

Definately means making your decision within the 14 Day, no questions, return period more critical, as they have to accept it back no matter what in that period.

But could mean if it is after 14 days, even your AppleCare would be no use to rectify it :(, even though you have a product that performs noticeably worse than the same product supplied to others for the same price.

I'm in the US. Unfortunately I was outside of the 14 day period when I noticed the issue. The first time I talked to someone I had no issue sending it in for a repair but they only changed the logic board. I called again and sent it in a second time and after holding it for 3 days they decided they were not going to do anything and shipped it back.

Hi Emcelly, Just a heads up that even if you buy a MacBook Pro or Air, you have the chance of ending up with an LG, Samsung, or AUO LCD. Unfortunately, the AUO has a very yellow and dull display, while the washed out colors and low contrast seem to be standard on the LG. I own another MacBook Air with a Samsung screen and frankly, its very hard to go from the Samsung down to the LG. I'm about to get my 4th MBA (3rd replacement)...hopefully it has a Samsung screen. Good Luck

I have a problem with people generalizing conditions related to a particular vendor panels as all inclusive, meaning every panel is defective. I have a LG panel which has excellent color, high contrast/blacks, high brightness, no yellowing, no stuck/dead pixals, and unless tested in a certain way, not decernable IR. Your statement about washed out colors and low contrast being true of LG displays doesn't fly.

Aug 21, 2012 12:52 PM in response to johns1

For the record, my LG display also has great colors, no yellowness, no dead pixels, great contrast, etc. The *only* deficiency in my display is the image retention, and for my uses, it's fairly minor. But I will still ask for a replacement eventually (after giving Apple some time to sort this out) because I don't believe this level of image retention is normal or should be accepted.
