Retina Macbook Pro LCD Mura (White Spot)

I just got my brand new retina screen Macbook Pro today and after a few hours of use, I noticed a light spot in the mid-lower left side of the screen. It's a cloudy light spot also known as mura. ***** that this innovative new screen on the expensive as heck MBP retina has this issue. I'll have to see what can be done about it at the Apple store, but I don't want to be without my new laptop (which I need for work) for over a month.

Anyone else with a new MBP retina seeing the same issues?

I've already got my screen replaced. it just took Apple 1 week to replace my faulty screen. The customer service was awesome. I just went straight to the service counter and explained my problem to the technician. He looked at my screen and asked me whether have i ever spilled water onto my macbook. of course i say never. After conforming that the problem was a factory defect, he said to me that it would took them 2 weeks to get it done. Surprisingly, I received a message from Apple to pick my laptop up just a week after. GOOD JOB APPLE. ANOTHER SATISFIED CUSTOMER. and I think my screen is better than the old one in terms of colour saturation. nevertheless, i notice that my new screen is having screen retention issue but it's not a problem as long as you enable the screen saver.

I can confirm that after a visit to Apple (Sydney) to explain the issue, they have said they will be replacing the screen for me. It should take 3-5 working days.

My Macbook is in immaculate condition, and the chap at Apple couldn't see any external defects at all and didn't question me on water damage etc (not that it has anyway).

I am taking it in tomorrow for the repair.

I figure I should throw my experience into the mix. I just picked up my rMBP today. 13" Late 2013. I took it in 7 days ago, but it was finished within 5. I was two days inside of the 1 year warranty expiration and it was fortunately covered. Unlike the $700 I see quoted in earlier posts, mine was quoted at 100 labor and 180 parts. So, they either have the repair process more optimized or the parts have gotten cheaper.

Either way, I'm glad I was just inside of warranty and the new display is working fine. Hopefully, it won't happen again.

I bought a used macbook pro about a week ago. The person I bought it from did not know or did not tell me that the computer had this screen problem and obviously I did not notice it. The spot was very small but still noticeable. The good thing is that the computer was still under warranty so I was able to take it in for service. I made my appointment on a Thursday and took it in on Friday. They told me that it would take anywhere from 3 to 5 days. Today is Saturday and it is ready for pickup, which means that it only took a day.

I have a mid 2014 MacBook Pro Retina 13", which was purchased in March 2015. In June 2015, I noticed a single bright spot mura located about 1.5" above the F7 key. I called Apple Support and reported the screen defect. Apple Support was excellent and only wanted to confirm that the defect was not dead pixels (dead pixels may be indicated by their geometric/square shaped pattern). Apple Support told me to go to my local Apple Store and have a Genius inspect and assess the mura. I made a Genius appointment and brought my MacBook in. The Genius had no problem confirming the mura and said that it was a manufacturer defect that is covered under the Apple warranty. The Genius stated that they would send my MacBook to their "Depot" in Houston, TX for display replacement. I gave my MacBook to the Apple Store on a Wednesday afternoon, and it was returned that Friday. So, Apple shipped my MacBook overnight to Houston by FedEx, the display replaced the next day, and then returned via FedEx the same day of the repair. Super fast and excellent service. I was worried that the Depot repair would scratch or sloppily repair my MacBook, as it is in pristine condition. But my MacBook was returned in equally pristine condition with a new display assembly (the complete display replaced as it is a singular, bonded part).

For those MacBook owners who are curious which screen I had, and what was the replacement, I used the Color Sync app to find out the display information. The defective screen was model "0000A018" and the manufacturer was "00000610". The replacement display was also a model "0000A018" model, and also manufactured by "00000610". The manufacture date code for the replacement is "CCD71000", but I can't seem to find the actual date translation through a Google search. I did remember that the manufacturer date code for the defective screen was different than the replacement, but I did not write it down. My research of manufacturer codes and model #s did not confirm if the screen was made by Samsung or LG. Anyway, the screen looks perfect right now, with no muras detected. As a side note, I take great care of my MacBook to ensure that it is always protected (in a case), and handled carefully. Some online forums stated that Apple Geniuses have told other MacBook Pro Retina owners that their particular muras were caused by pressure on the display (either by pressure on the aluminum exterior, or on the screen). I can say 100% that my mura was not caused by external pressure, nor excessive heat. And from my experience reporting the problem to Apple Support and the Apple Store Genius, I think Apple is conceding that display muras may actually be manufacturer defects, rather than caused by owner mishandling.

So in conclusion, if anyone finds out that their retina display has a mura/muras, Apple should replace the display without question as long as it's in the 1 year warranty period, or 3 year Apple Care period. I'm not sure if Apple would replace the screen out of the warranty period, though. But I think if your MacBook is out of the warranty period, and you have a Genius take a look, they would recommend a "Depot repair". A Depot repair can only be initiated by an Apple Genius, or an AASP, and is a flat rate repair. The flat rate is $280 and will not only replace your display, but will repair and/or replace any parts needed. You may receive a new logic board, keyboard, battery, etc., if the Depot repair technician determines that your MacBook needs it to return it to refurbished condition. According to some other Apple forums, a Depot repair might restore your MacBook to a certified Apple Refurbished condition.

I still have 8 months left on my standard Apple 1 year warranty and will keep an eye out for any new display defects, or any defects on my MacBook. I will update this post if anything turns up. Still don't know if I will buy Apple Care. I never bought it before, and had iMacs, MacBooks, iPhones, iPods, Base Stations, and Express Base Stations since 2006 with no problems. Actually, my late 2008 MacBook had a dead display pixel, which I noticed around 16 months from the purchase date. Even though it was out of the warranty period, I brought it into the SoHo NYC Apple Store and had a Genius look at it. The Genius had the display replaced, via the Depot, with no questions asked. Turn around time was also just around 36 hours, between drop off time and return. Awesome Apple service.

This is a late replay, but I hope that you had your display replaced. Apple will definitely replace it, especially if you are within your warranty period. Don't listen to the Genius. Just call into Apple Support and report the issue. They should easily determine that the issue is a manufacturer defect and have you return to your Apple Store for display replacement.

I have had my MacBook Pro Retina for exactly 1 year now. I have just noticed last night that I have a little white spot that appears in the lower right corner of my screen. I can only see the white spot on white background pages. I am freaking out and I have no idea how this could happen! I have been so careful with this mac since I purchased it. Unfortunately, my 1 year warranty has expired, but from what I read this is a manufacturer issues and so shouldn't it be replaced by Apple regardless of having warranty or not? Can anyone fill me in on what I should do or what may happen given my situation?

Thanks!

Just contact Apple Support to ensure they document your issue, then they can help schedule you for an appointment with a Genius at your nearest Apple Store. The Genius will probably take a quick look at your display and confirm that the issue is a hardware defect (display "mura"). I am confident that Apple will take care of you and have the display replaced as (1) it is a hardware defect that has been well documented and (2) you have just one year of ownership which, even though it is just outside of the standard warranty period, Apple typically will make things right for their customers. If you are not near or convenient to an Apple Store, then the Apple Support rep should be able to have you ship your Macbook to the repair "depot" for a quick (2-3 day turnaround time) display replacement.

As you can see from my post, I noticed a single, dead pixel on my late 2008 MacBook several months outside of the warranty period. I simply brought it in to my local Apple Store, a Genius looked at it for about 1 minute, then said they would have the display replaced immediately. Super easy and no hassle. Apple's customer service is fantastic. And just last month I noticed the display "mura" issue on my 3 month old mid 2014 MacBook Pro Retina. Since I was well within the warranty period, I knew that Apple would replace my display without question. Anyway, you shouldn't have to worry. I'm sure that Apple will take care of you.

I have a late 2013 MacBook Pro 13" retina. I bought it in November 2013 and within a few months I started getting tiny little cracks in the upper right hand corner of the display. It had never been dropped or hit. I treat all my technology/electronics with great care. In October of 2014 I finally took it into the Apple Store to have them check it out. They were great and replaced the entire display clam shell, free of charge.

A few months later, probably in January of 2015 a mura appeared two inches from the bottom of the display and four inches from the right side. At first I thought it was a little grease smudge or fingerprint on the display. I cleaned it and forgot about it. I left it plugged into a dock for several months and the mura was out of site and out of mind. The last couple months I've started using the computer out of the dock a lot more and the mura drives me crazy. I finally took it in today to the Apple Store and went through the history of the computer, and how they had already replaced the display once.

Unfortunately, no compassion this time. I just got lectured on warranties and how they work in the world of cars. I feel like when you pay a couple grand for a little laptop, a manufacturing defect should be repaired regardless of warranty. The only option the "genius" gave me was paying $450 to have it replaced.

I should get a good five or six years out of this MacBook Pro and not have to replace the display every year.

I really appreciate the comments on here, so I will post my recent experience with my out-of-warranty macbook pro retina:

I also had the "mura" (though no one I spoke with at Apple knew of that name- they tend to call it "light leakage"). I have a small white spot on my Macbook Pro Retina 2012 display that was only visible on bright pages (not black).

Short story is I called once and went to the genius bar once and then a phone rep eventually got the repair approved for my out-of-warranty macbook pro retina 2012. Apple has ALWAYS been amazing for me. I have a belief that if I give them enough opportunities, they will give me what I want. I have had more than one iPhone replaced, and a bluetooth keyboard as well- all out of warranty. Their support is simply unmatched in technology as far as I'm concerned- they ALWAYS take care of me- and for that I give my loyalty (plus who wants a windoze or android 😝).

Hope it helps someone!

The same happened to me (MacBookPro11,2) bought on April, 2014.

They changed me the screen (for free) 3 TIMES!!!! And the problem came again some days ago (3 months after the last screen change). IT IS INCREDIBLE. And it is impossible to talk with no one in Apple in Spain, the support is HORRIBLE.

I use the computer for working, I NEED A WHOLE NEW COMPUTER, NOT A NEW SCREEN THAT WILL FAIL AGAIN IN 3 MONTHS.

Incredible, a 2000 euro computer failing again and again. If they don´t do something REAL and solve the problem properly, after 2 MacBook Pro, it will be the last computer I will bought to Apple.

Adrián.

PD: how many cases have to occur to Apple starts a "replacement program"?

I had my screen replaced because of screen coating issue: http://appleinsider.com/articles/15/10/17/apple-activates-quality-program-for-re tina-macbook-coatings

After only 1,5 months, a white spot appeared at my new screen. I hope the authorised serviced provider will replace the screen. They say the new screen had a warranty of 3 months. I'm off warranty and have no apple care.
