iTunes says there is an update 10.6.3 but when I click to update nothing happens? My screen blinks once and then nothng...
With that one, try updating using an iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64Setup.exe) downloaded from the Apple website:
http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Does that go through any better for you?
I have the same problem. If i do that will it delete the stuff on my current itunes? I have some music that isn't from itunes, will it delete it? Or does it just update it? Thanks.
I have the same problem, and I downloaded it from the link b noir recommended, but I'm afraid to install for fear of losing my original itunes content...same concern as roxygrl812. I started the installation process, but it seemed like it was installing a whole NEW itunes, therefore scaring me into thinking that I'll lose all I already have on my itunes, instead of just updating the software. Please help, I'm afraid to take any further action. Thanks, if anyone can help. And would I need to uninstall the other?
Under normal circumstances, an update using an installer from the Apple Website doesn't touch your content.
If you'd still like to do something different (for whatever reason), you could perhaps try doing a "Run as Administrator" with your Apple Software Update.
Quit Apple Software Update first if you've got it open.
In Computer (or My Computer, on XP) open your C Drive or whichever drive you have your program files installed on.
If you've got a 32-bit Windows, open the "Program files" folder.
If you've got a 64-bit Windows, open the "Program files (x86)" folder.
Open the "Apple Software Update" folder.
Right-click on the "SoftwareUpdate.exe" file and select "Run as Administrator", as per the following screenshot:
Does ASU show you the iTunes update now?
Hi b Noir;
I've seen your many helpful posts on this issue in several other threads and must give you a huge collective thanks for your selflessness in attempting to address & assist the plethora of users having this ASU problem. The reason I chose to raise the ASU.lnk file to administrative privilege rather than the SoftwareUpdate.exe file was that(at least on my system) the "Run as Administrator" tick box was alrady checked under the properties/compatibility tab for the SoftwareUpdate.exe file. Right clicking on the software update.exe file and choosing run as administrator was not successful. This is what gave me the initial idea to look at the shortcut (ASU.lnk) file and raise that to administrative privilege. You would think that since the SU.exe file has administrative privilege already, and the ASU.lnk shotrtcut simply points to the SU.exe file; none of this would be necessary anyway. This whole situation has me completely baffled and, again, at this point I can only surmise the issue lies at Apple's end. Thanks again for your help and your willingness to provide assistance throughout this forum.
There are a bunch of other threads reporting this same problem, e.g. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4045017?start=0&tstart=0
Hello, B NOIR. I took those same steps as above. When the Apple Software update window pops up, and it says it's checking for updates, nothing appears. No updates are listed for me to click and install. I just tried to run the installer you originally recommended, but part way through, I received a notice: that it was 'interrupted', that my system has not been modified, and that I should try a later time. This is really weird. I have a new iPad 2 that I need to sync with my computer with the latest iTunes, it says, so I'm afraid to start the setup process with it without the latest software. I have a Dell with Windows Vista, a few years old, but I minimally use it. It has always notified me of updates from itunes, and now this...I guess I should call apple support. 😟 Thank you for all your help thus far.
Hello, please read my newest reply to B NOIR. Do you also have these problems, or been able to resolve it? Thanks
To LoveAlien;
If the new iPad 2 you have has iOS 5 on it already, you, technically don't have to sync it with itunes to set it up. All ipads with iOS after 5.0 can be set up and can get iOS updates over-the-air. Unfortunately, if your iPad came with iOS 4.3 or you are trying to get the new iOS 6 Beta, you will need to sync with itunes(and for the iOS 6 Beta update, with itunes 10.6.3). If you are trying to sync with itunes to transfer songs and have iOS 5 or above, you can subscribe to itunes match(costs $20 per year I think) through the itunes version you currently have running. All the other material you have (apps, notes, iBooks, etc.. except for audiobooks and movies) should automatically sync up with you new iPad once you set it up under your Apple ID; as long as you have the option to auto sync your material across devices set up correctly in itunes and on the iPad 2.
Good news, the ASU seems to be working again(starting today for me and for the past few days I've seen positive reports from other places on planet earth). I've only been able to see this on my computer at work(running Win 7 32) but it definitely IS working as it should. It loads, starts the appropriate green bar search progress, and then finds anything on my computer that needs to be either updated or installed - I know this because I do not have Safari installed on my work computer and it is now 10 for 10 in loading and finding and telling me that I should download and install Safari 5.1.7(everything else on my work computer from Apple is already installed and fully updated). Hopefully, when I get home, I will find that my desktop and laptop are also working as they should. It appears it was a problem from Apple's end this entire time. As others have speculated in other similar threads; Apple most likely "fixed" this on their end about 3 days ago, but has been slowly dispersing the "fix" throughout their worldwide update servers. Some people were lucky enough to have the servers in their neck of the woods fixed earlier then others. Hopefully, as Apple finally matriculates the fix to ALL their update servers, everyone will be back up and running smoothly with their Apple Software Updater. If the ASU on your machine is still wonky, just hold out for a bit longer; It should be up and working any day now.
I've done that myself, but the ASU doesn't list ANY updates, even though the iTunes player insists there is. What now?
Heck, I can't even DL the full iTunes client atm. The http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/ DL page is broken and is not loading up all of its assets. *sigh*

When I went home on Saturday 6/30/12, I found that both my Desktop(Windows 7 64bit) and my laptop(Windows Vista 32bit) were back up with the Apple Software Updater and running perfectly. So in my neck of the woods(Eastern Pennsylvania in the USA), everything seems to have been "fixed" by Apple. I know how frustrating it is waiting but it should, hopefully, be up and running for everyone quite soon. For Roshomon1950, you may want to contact Apple Support directly via phone or email and see if they can assist you further.
I don't know what is going on now. It was working perfectly for 4 days. Now it's back to doing the same old dysfunctional idiocy. Apple BETTER get its act together or make an announcement that they are having an issue. This is absolutely intolerable!!!!! it looks like a Windows Tablet or Google tablet for me in the future.
