2012 Macbook Pro with retina display won't recognize my External Hard drive.

I have 2 Macbook Pro's, a 2009 and this brand new one I got today. My external hard drive is a 1 TB clickfree. It has worked for months on my old Mac but when I plug it into my new mac it doesn't even show up in finder or disk utility. I tried the USB ports with another device and they work fine. So it isn't a hard ware issue. The cables are USB 3.0. The external hard drive model number is HD2037N3.

I have tried taking everything off (huge pain) and reformating the drive and still it doesn't recognize it!

Can someone offer me help onto how I can get my Mac to recognize it?

Hey what kind of external drive is it?? Check to make sure that your external drive is compatible with USB 3.0. Hopefully it's not an issue with the MBPR.

it is a 2 TB (sorry I said 1 before) "clickfree" external hard drive. The USB 3.0 is the cord that came with it and I have been using it for months now.

Does that HDD work on your 2009 MBP now? If so, do not change the cable (presumably USB2) and attach it to the new MBP.

Yes the External hard drive has always worked on my 2009 mbp. The cable is usb 3.0 but I can't simply swap it out because the end that connects to the hdd is special, thinner and wide.

I am having this exact same issue. I have a WD Passport that will work on my 2007 macbook (almost 5 years old) when I plug into my MBP Retina that I just purchased, nothing shows up. I have even tried leaving the hard drive in the USB for 2 hours, and still: nothing. If anyone can help, that would be so wonderful!

I just read someone's post and they said that they had to go through the finder to locate their drive and click on an option for it to show up on the desktop. Can you confirm this? Also is Mac OSX updated?

You mean finder preferences, I read that too, it is enabled and yes I updated my OSX as soon as I booted it up.

Really?! I'm still waiting for my MacBook pro retina to come in the mail and after all the money we spent it shouldn't have any problems such as this. Hope we don't have to wait to long for apple to address this issue and send out an update! Sorry I couldn't help much, but if you find a solution please share it.

I have tried another friend's HD (toshiba brand) and it works just fine.

I am going to go to to Apple Store tomorrow and see if my hard drive works on any of the display computers, and if it does, then I know something must be wrong my mine.

Well really that is good to know, that if in a crunch I can buy another brand and use it for the extra space.. Then again for the amount these cost this shouldn't be a day 1 issue.

Yes try it on the retina display MBP and see if it works, I know my HDD works on my 2009 MBP perfectly.

There have been a number of reports here about USB 3 drives not working with USB 3 ports. Only one user that I have seen has had a solution - offered by an Apple 'genius' - and that was a replacement of the power supply. I don't think that is everyone's solution, however. I'd make an appointment with your local Apple Store and take in your new MBP and you drive and see if they can offer a fix.

BTW - does the drive show up when you invoke a System Report? Some have and some haven't.

No it does not. It doesn't show anything is being used in the USB 3.0 ports. It also doesn't show up in disk utility or anywhere else. Yet when I plug in my usb for my iphone in either port it works fine. I also just tried my printer to the usb port and it worked fine also.

I'm afraid that there is a problem with Apple's USB 3 port - most may not have problems but there have been may reported here.

Also someone should check to see if the issue is on the new MacBook airs and non retina display pro's. Do you have to retina display setting to "best"? Do you think it has something to do with that since a lot of power is being used for the resolution of the screen?
