Nike+ temporarily unavailable

I have tried uploading my Nike+ data for the past 2 weeks, only to be hit with the message " Itunes could not connect to Nike+. The Nike+website is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later." Yet if I go to the site manually it is up and running.

Can anyone suggest a solution so I can update my data?

Actually, I sent the XML files and a spreadsheet (XLS) with the information about the runs. I figured the XML files might help them identify the underlying problem. I'm not sure which one they used for manually adding the runs. I'm sure plain text in an email would work just as well.

Initially I just emailed Nike+ from their website.

I got an automated response almost immediately confirming that they recieved my message. A few days later I got a message from an actual person with instructions on how to extract the XML files. I've been emailing this person directly since then. You can probably skip a lot of the back and forth because you already know what needs to be done.

I don't want to list his email address here because that employee might get bombarded with requests directly. It would be better to go through the main help portal so the work load gets spread around. That way everyone will get a response in a reasonable amount of time.

Hi Nick

Managed to resolve this myself, after reading a few of the posts on here I decided to Restore the iPod nano. Then set up a 20 second run & it uploaded. Quickly copied my backed up runs onto the iPod & relaunched iTunes, all uploaded.

Emailed & messaged Nike on twitter to say I've resolved it & how I'm not impressed with the calibre of their support!

christof,

How does one back up run data from the iPod before restoring it? I'm having the same trouble. I called Apple support only to be put on hold for 15 minutes and then hung up on (twice). They make no mention of being aware of the problem, and despite taking my e-mail and phone number in the event that we get cut off, I have not heard from them.

Nike at least has responded, though not with a solution yet. They also didn't seem to be aware that this was a widespread problem across the Nike+ community.

I was getting the same error. Tried a number of things and now the Nike+ sync is working again. Here is what I did, not sure, but I think you could possibly skip to the last step.

  1. Backup the Nano workout files.
    1. Enable the nanno as a disc on the main "summary" page.
    2. In Terminal (or similar command line) goto the device and copy the "latest" and "synced" folders that have all the XML files to your computer.
    3. Location: "Device->Trainer->Workouts->Empeds" Then under there will be pedometer & some other folder, the latest & synced folders will be there.
  2. Perform a Restore on the Nano.
  3. Do a short walk and run from the Nike+ app.
  4. Plug the Nano in and Sync it, uploading the data to Nike+
  5. Copy back the XML files from the "latest" and "synced" folders to the appropriate place on the nano.

At this point the Nike+ sync started failing again.

  6. Delete the 0 size files from the "latest" folder on the Nano.

At this point the Nike+ sync started working.

I really think that just skipping to the point of deleting any 0-sized XML files from the "latest" folder on the Nano would resolve the issue, I'd recommend trying that first.

Best of luck!

Hi ProZach99,

Thanks for the tip. I think I am getting somewhere. But before I pull the trigger just want to be sure.

1. Backup the Nano workout files. I managed to copy these files out from /Device/Trainer/Workouts/Empeds/pedometer

- 2012-02-22 16;15;01.xml

- lastWorkout.xml

- preferences.xml

- settings.plist

Is that all I need? OR do I need to copy the entire Emped folder?

Look forward to your guidance.

cheers,

Skloke,

It wont hurt to back it all up just in case.

But, after backing up I'd recommend just going in and removing all 0-byte sized workout files (the ones with the dates) from the nano. I think that's all that really needs to be done.

The preferences/settings/lastworkout files seem to auto-generate and can be re-created, you just dont want to loose your past workouts (any XML files with a date for the filename and some data in the file).

Best of luck,

Zach

I found out that if you have chosen another language than english you're going to have a problem with the <calories> tag. The iPod nano then stores the number of calories and the word for calories inside the tag. This is probably validated at Nike+ as a numeric value and that's why the error message appear.

The solution for now is to edit your latest runs and remove the space and the word for calories in your language and leave only the actual value. You should now be able to synchronize in iTunes.

Preferable you select english as language for your future runs util a fix is done.

Hope this helps!

Cheers

I started having this same problem with my iPod Nano 6th generation a few months ago.

I just realised/recognised that under Workout History in iTunes that after all this time it is still telling my that I have "17" gym workouts waiting to be sent to Nike+. I have done way more than 17 workouts and expected that if there was an issue with uploading my workouts that the number of workouts should have increased by now. Today however, when I connected up my Nano I could actually see iTunes uploading my workouts. I decided to log on to Nike+ (hadn't bothered doing so prior as I thought there'd be no point if my workouts weren't being uploaded) and I discovered that pretty much all my workouts had in fact been uploaded, except for one month where there is quite a number of them missing. I assume that the 17 workouts stuck on my Nano are the ones from that month.

So even though I'm getting the "Nike+ website is temporarily unavailable" alert, my workouts are still being uploaded.

The 17 that are stuck on my Nano may be due to a corrupt XML file. My Nano completely locked up/froze during a workout on a treadmill which I believe was where the problem started. It was frozen on the NIke+ screen. I had to hard reset it to get the Nano to work again.

Thanks to the info from the previous posts I may be able to figure out what the problem is and correct the corrupt data or simply delete the corrupt files if I can't fix it. I'll post back when I get the chance to do that.

First up, let me say thanks to ProZach99 for his post on September 9. That helped me resolve my issue. And I can confirm that all you need to do is delete the offending file. 🙂

My Nano was already set to Enable Disk Use however I couldn't see the folders on the Nano via Mac OSX, so I bootcamped over to Windows 7. Using Explorer, without making any system tweaks, all the Nano folders and files were visible.

I located the "latest" folder: x:\iPod_Control\Device\Trainer\Workouts\Empeds\NewUser\latest

This is where the 17 unsent files were. I opened the first file and found that it had an error saying "empty file", and sure enough it was empty, void of workout data. Actually the following is what the file said when opened in Safari:

This page contains the following errors:

error on line 1 at column 1: Document is empty

error on line 1 at column 1: Encoding error

Below is a rendering of the page up to the first error.

There was nothing under the line saying "Below is a rendering".

Anyway, I then clicked on all other 16 files and found that they were all actually okay, they all contained workout data. So it appears that the one corrupt file was somehow holding back the other 16.

I created a folder on my Nano called Corrupt and moved the empty file there. I could have simply deleted it but decided to hang onto it for future reference.

So this one empty file which was void of the required data in order for it to be sent to Nike+ successfully was producing the spurious alert that the Nike+ website was unavailable, instead of stating something more accurately along the lines of "file empty/corrupt, cannot be sent" or "file contains invalid address" or "file cannot be sent to Nike+, please check file".

I'd say this corrupt file was the result of the Nano freezing up. The Technogym treadmill created an empty file ready for populating with data after my run but because the Nano locked up, possibly at some point during the workout, the treadmill was unable to store the workout data into that file leaving an empty file.

So there you have it. If anyone else gets the "The Nike+ website is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later." alert then its most likely that you have and empty/corrupt file on your iPod sitting under the 'latest' folder. Again, big thanks to ProZach99 for pointing this out.

In short, simply find the offending file, move it elsewhere or simply delete it, re synch your iPod in iTunes and any unsent workouts should get sent to Nike+. And you shouldnt see that alert any more. It's as easy as that. No need to do a backup and restore on your device.

🙂

Off topic:

Under the ....\NewUser\synched folder you will find all your previous workouts too. Not that you would ever really need them however if such a situation arose where say all your workouts are somehow wiped out from the Nike+ website, you can simply copy the files into the 'latest' folder, synch your device and all your workouts should be re uploaded. Well in theory anyway. It may or may not work. There may be other files that need to be tweaked in order for that to happen.
