Macbook Pro Retina runs hot while lid is closed and fans working at full speed

When i open the lid and check the activity monitor a different process runs at 100% everytime. After I open the lid the process goes back to normal, the mbp cools down and fans slow down. It only started happening after few days of use.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

If I remember correctly, in my case the problem was an external monitor that I connected to the HDMI port. The monitor used to work fine with a Windows laptop, but if I kept it in the MacBook while it was sleeping (the monitor was sleeping too), it caused the Mac to overheat. When I disconnected the monitor, the problem disappeared.

Coming home from lunch today, I noticed that my Retina MacBook Pro's Apple logo was lit up with the lid closed. The MBP was very hot and the fans were running. It should have been asleep. I always just close the lid to put the computer to sleep.

Opening the lid, the computer was locked up. I couldn't move the cursor and the keys had no effect. I had to restart by holding down the power button.

Another time, a few days ago, the MBP locked up while running Safari. The computer became non responsive and I had to reboot via the power button.

Both times I was running Safari, Mail, and iTunes in separate desktops. My MBP is up to date running Mountain Lion.

Curious.

I FIXED MY ISSUE. Well, at least it hasn't happened in a few weeks 😉

The most important thing I did was turn off "wake for network access" in system prefs. That killed a million console messages - more importantly my MBP-Retina actually goes into full hibernation. Someone mentioned that the automatic date/time sync was always pinging and causing wake ups.

Then I went throug the console and found everything that pinged and determined if it was something I needed. I've got lots of leftover junk from previous software. Then I figured out how to delete them all. I had a license manager from some old software that kept looking for a licese server, MLB.com's ultracast thingy was always on even though I quit using mlb.tv, etc...

I'm having similar problems. I close the lid on the computer and assume it goes to sleep. No external way to tell. However, I come back an hour later and open the lid and it doesn't start back up. Turns out that it actually crashed or something because it requires a full power up and upon logging back in all of the apps I had open are all closed and not saved.

Its like I close the lid and the power button gets held down to do a hard reset.

I've turned off the network wake settings so will see if that has any effect.

Ok, I was about to go to bed and figured I'd test this out more tomorrow. I debated whether I wanted to shut down, put to sleep or just close the lid before I went to bed. I opted to click the apple icon and select to go to sleep while leaving my display open.

The system immediately turned off the screen and went to sleep. I turned around to turn the light off and about 10 seconds later the system just turned itself back on and brought me to the encryption login form (using full disk encryption) . The only way it gets here is through a hard reset or shut down, so putting the system to sleep crashed it.

I had the chrome browser opened when I put it to sleep and I have hundreds of messages about the same time about the Chrome Helper: failed to lookup bootstrapper during domain extension errors. Not sure if its related but possible I guess.

Any ideas?

I posted some time back about having this problem too. Since then I applied the patch, and upgraded to Mountain Lion, as well as turning off "wake for network access" etc. Since applying the patch I have not had any recurrence of the problem. (Although I am much more likely now to do a complete shutdown when I won't need the machine for a while, and stuffing it in a bag.) So, for me at least, the patch and Mountain Lion seem to have solved the issue.

I posted this a month ago - haven't had a single reoccurance yet:

Hello,

I did EFI update which came out yesterday as well along with major mountain lion update. today morning I was heading to work, Kept my laptop to sleep and came to office and it was piping hot!! and when I clicked power button it turned on. So how was it even getting hot whilst it was asleep unless it went soo hot it turned itself off . Apple should fix this ASAP.
