New MBP Retina Magsafe Disconnecting ALL THE TIME!

Quick History: I have a 2008 Macbook Pro, a 2011 Macbook Air and now I've got the brand new, 2012 15" Retina Display MBP... meaning I've used each of the three types of Magsafe Connectors for extended periods of time.

Problem: After a week or so of use, I've noticed that the newly re-designed Magsafe connection on the MBP Retina seems to unattach itself ALL THE TIME. I'm talking about 3-4 times per session when I'm sitting on the sofa or sitting in a chair. The slightest tension of the cord pulls the connection out of alignment or rips the magsafe completely out. Also, it seems to be more difficult to re-attach, i.e. I can't just grab it and fumble it along the corner edge of the laptop to have it magically re-attach itself. I frequently have to look at the connection to get it to line up perfectly and re-attach.

From an engineering perspective it's easy to see why as it's thinner and longer, meaning it takes greater precision/accuracy to lock it in place, and the angle of incident for a disconnect is easier to breach. To be perfectly honest, I don't see an engineering advantage to this new change... just complete devastation when it comes to use.

In summary, I'm wholly displeased with the new Magsafe connection and feel as though it's a HUGE step back in the evolution of it's design. I truly don't see an upside to this new design, which honestly baffles me. It's almost as if they forgot to test the function of this new connection and included it haphazardly (which I know isn't true, it just seems that way).

Anyone else feeling my pain?

I have to chime in with my general frusteration on the issue being described here also. I've owned various versions of macbook airs for years now. I really like the latest version - i bought a 13" - except for the magsafe power supply. it disconnects way too easily. The most annoying situation is when i want to sit the laptop on my lap and the slightest pressure from your leg on the connector disconnects. depending on what i'm running on my laptop at that particular time, this may or may not be a problem - gaming means a dead battery in an hour if i don't notice it...word processing no biggie. in the end, it's just super annoying to have to check it or see my screen dim when it disconnects and then glance over to see it's disconnected and have to adjust my sitting position to have it reconnect. the L shaped adpaters worked just fine. hopefully apple will go back to that. for now...i'm running on battery more often than not. bleh!

Remember that the magnet is in the computer is all cases, as it would not be a good idea to have a magnet at the end of a wire that could be waved around to cause problems all over the place.

It is possible to have a MacBook with a "sample defect" of having a magnet that is too weak. Check with the guys at the Genius Bar to be sure. Your appointment is free, in warranty or out.

I agree, the new design is lousy for lap use, but ok for dekstop. Eveytime I put the laptop on my lap it lifts the magsafe and pops it off.

It also pops off if I put the Macbook down on a soft surface such as sofa or duvet.

The original T-magsafe was perfect but had weak strain releif so would break the wires, the second L-one was stronger but awful to use in every way.

I was pleased to see a return to the T-shape magsafe, but as the laptop is so thin, the rectangle of the connector so large and the point of contact so narrow, there is too much leverage to pop it off.

I'm glad to hear (unfortunatly) that others are having the same issues. Since everyone here has already stated every complaint possible 😝 I'd just like to propose that maybe if Apple desined new connectors that are L-shaped like the previous MS, but the same thickness, etc. to fit the thin design of the new MBP Retina. This would obviously simply remove the frustatng aspects of the T-style connector and incorporate the best of both worlds (no pun intended for those of who who mistakenly recognize that phrase).

-Just my two cents anyway...so take it with a grain of salt.

Yes I agree the OLD L-Shaped MS didn't disconnect easily (to the point that it was bad), but also think about it this way: The OLD L-Shaped MS was thicker and thus had a larger magnet which in turn required a greater amount of force to "yank" out if someone triped over it. HOWEVER, the new MBP Retina has a SMALLER magnet connector space COMPARED to the ORGINAL MBP magnet connector place. That is why I said they should make a L-Shaped MS connector with a smaller magnet (by smaller magnet, I mean the magnet size of the new MBP Retina), which would theoretically mean it takes less of a tug to come out if someone trips over it. And because the MS charger design I suggested has a L-Shape rather then a T-Shape, this would solve the problem that the charger comes out at even the slightest angle change ( for example if your sitting on a sofa or bed and it tugs a little at an angle, or if the laptop is placed on a table and the wire hanging off the table is tugged a little when you reposition the mac ), because the T-Shape pretrudes out of the MBP Retina at a 90 degree angle (which is BAD) and the L-Shaped one stays close to the MBP, and its design doesn't allow it to be accidently be pulled out at the slightest angle change above or below 90 degrees.

I like that the new connecter seems to leave the ports around it a little clearer, you had a directional companant to the last version. But like others, though I've adjusted to it, I do think it disconnects a little too easy. I would suggest thisis the sort of thing we should put in the Apple suggestion box. Its not bad, but just a little to easy to come out. The last one would come out easy enough if you tripped on the cord or it caught, never sent the thing flying but you could move the computer around easier without having to worry about it disconnecting.

I just want to put my two cents in, even though this thread is several months old. I've been an Apple user since 1985, and I have owned every laptop that uses the MagSafe adapter.

I just bought a brand new MacBook Pro 15 inch with Retina Display. The magnetic connection is LOUSY. It continues falling off, and like other folks here have mentioned, if you are sitting on the couch or in a chair, the slightest movement and POP it falls off. I have NEVER had another Apple product (with MagSafe) do this. This one is definitely weaker than all others in the past. I don't think there is a way to repair this---it's built-in and we will just have to live with it, unfortunately.
