Downloading apps stuck on waiting...

For the past few days I've been unable to download any apps from the App Store on my iOS devices, including the iPad and iPhone. I click "install", it asks for my password, it goes back to the home screen and the icon pops up and it says "waiting…" underneath, and then nothing ever happens. It's just stuck on waiting forever. It's basically what you would expect would happen if the store was down or my internet was down, except neither is the case.

I called Apple support and the only thing they had to offer was to do a factory reset on both my iPad and iPhone. I'd rather not do that because it's a pain. Plus, how can it be a hardware problem when it's happening on BOTH of my devices? It sounds like a problem with my account on their end, but they had no idea.

Has this happened anybody else? Anybody have any ideas?

For the record, I can still download apps onto my computer in iTunes and then sync those apps to my devices, I just can't download apps directly from my devices. Very strange.

Thanks for any help you guys can offer! =)

I fixed it from another post: go into iTunes -> more -> downloads and look for stuck downloads there. It's non-obvious, but it's also not difficult. Delete all the downloads in progress in iTunes and then try downloading apps again.

I guess if you have one download stuck anywhere, it screws up all downloads everywhere.

Anyway, worked for me. Whew.

I'm amazed at the fact that apple requires people to go use iTunes in order to delete pending downloads. I have iOS 7 on my iphone 5 and I am completely unable to delete a pending multi-gig movie download. Pretty ridiculous. Just to show how much they care about support, you will also find it funny that if you run spell check on your posting to this community, the words iTunes, iOS, iPhone, etc... are not even in the spelling dictionary. LOL!

Alright people, I may have found a solution to this irritating problem. Though gimmicky, it worked for me after trying everything else mentioned short of resetting to factory, which we all know ***** all ur personal files to some dark place never to be seen again! Tom Meade1 got me on the right track with going to the app store=>purchased. This is where it was funky, as mentioned by dapne chin, the apps stuck in installing mode are not respondent to anything besides taking you to the apps purchase page in the store. After getting further irritated I just happened to click on one of my apps in the cloud and my password screen came up. As soon as I clicked cancel another pop-up came up saying something about one of my apps stuck in waiting mode not being able to update at this time, the message I have been longing for for 5 freaking days!!! As soon as I hit ok, I noticed that the four apps stuck where no longer greyed out saying installing. Went back to the home screen and UREAKAH!!!!! Hope this helps someone, because apple is clueless when it comes to this problem! Big ups to Tom Meade1 for getting me on the right path! WARNING: The lesson here is update one app at a time to avoid this catastrophe, why they even have the update all button when it is prone to problems is beyond me. LOVE APPLE, HATE UPDATE ALL!

this is not phone or OS problem . its only your router DNS transfer function problem

I have resolved the problem by myself. I just figured out that the problem due to the DNS transfer function in my router. If I set the iPhone 4S to use the DNS server as 192.168.1.1 which is also the ip address of my router it will have the problem until I set the DNS to some common DNS service, such as 8.8.8.8 from Google. I think it is the problem of compatibiliy between the iOS and the router.

GOTO SETTINGS>>WI-FI>>click on informatio button(i) of your network>> change DNS to 8.8.8.8>> return

all the best........🙂🙂

My solution just stumped me. I was "stuck" on the icons being grayed out and "waiting" on iOS 7.0.4. So what i realized was that I was using my comuter on WiFI connected to my router which then had my itunes media library stored on a NAS drive. Once I hard wired my mac to my network, and then disabled wi-fi on my mac. I went into iTuens pref's and to Advanced Preferences and reset my Itunes Media folder to the corret shared drive. See what was happening was that the system is looking for the files/apps which are stored in the library and the library was unavlaible or it was on a wifi network that wasn't fast enough to susatin all of them being installed.. Trust me I watied about 20 hours for it to complete, with no resoltuion. once I did this fix it then loaded up in a few minutes.. I have over 418 apps on my iPHone 64gb 5s... so that was the fix.. re-map your itunes prefs to your itunes media library and you'll re-sync it.

Just turn the phone off, shut the phone off for a minute or so, restart it.

Mess around with it, and just look for other advices.

Iphone5c and IOS7 download or whatever was driving me impatient with the waiting apps.

I did listen to an advice, go to App Store -Update then purchased. Find the paused apps and press each twice tap and wait. It works but it did not work with all apps waiting. Just 80 percent of them.

My son downloaded 8 free games at once.

I had no more options then called Sprint. Turning phone off solves most problems. Ok :)

If have kids just download what you need then on restrictions turn off in app purchases n installing apps.

Many thanks Subhash, this worked for me (setting DNS to 8.8.8.8). I am using Airtel broadband in India, with the Indian iTunes store. iOS 7.1.1.

I had tried re-setting my iPad many times (including the 2 button version), but the stalled apps were all saying "Waiting" even after doing that.

I had noticed that when trying to update the apps in the Updates screen of App Store, the download wasn't even starting - I would immediately get the msg about not being able to download at this time, with the "Done" / "Retry" buttons.

This to me sounds like something was preventing the download connection being created in the first place, which would fit with a DNS issue.

I've just been through the stalled apps one by one in App Store (there were 39), downloading them individually by tapping on the circle with the square inside. Not one of them failed after changing the DNS setting to 8.8.8.8 (which incidentally I had already been using on my Macbook for a long time because I find Airtel's DNS to be flakey).

I also went into Settings earlier and turned off permission to update apps in the background (Settings > General > Restrictions > Background App Refresh: Don't Allow Changes). Doing this on its own didn't help earlier, but I'm going to leave it switched off, so I can manage the updates myself. I don't have this iPad synced with a computer.

Thanks again - this had been annoying me for months!!
