My New iPad's screen is flickering after 30min of usage

My New iPad's screen is flickering after 30min of usage and needs to reboot to work properly. Is it a SW or HW problem? Anyone got this same issue?

Hi,

This is the same problem I faced when I played Be-Jeweled Blitz game & it started going off & restarting automatically. In previous days it got fixed by hardbooting. Slowly the problem turned vicious & then I have to restore the original setting through iTunes & finally now it doesnot sync with iTunes & the Apple Stores says now it is hardware problem & require half of the purchase cost of iPad to replace this!!!!! Unfortunately I never approached authorised dealer & try to resolve it by my own thinking that this is Apple!!!! And today I am with an Non-Functioning iPad!!!

Furhter the discussion in this forum is not considered as that you had the problem in past days & you really tried to resolve it, during this if you lose time & out of warranty - you will be considered as defaulter & charged!!!!

Hence I would suggest pls visit the Apple Store & ask for a New Replacement Immmediately or you will also be one of the defeated customer by Apple & believe me No One from Apple Listens for any thing & your Genuinity!!!!

I'm having a screen issue as well but, instead of flickering, a full 1/3rd of my screen on the right side when held in portrait or 1/3rd of the bottom when held in landscape mode gradually gets noticeably darker. This is with the new iPad. I was looking through recent posts to see if anyone else has been having screen issues when I ran across this posting. When I read that the issue seems to be caused by, or possibly related to, playing CSR Racing, I took immediate notice as I just started playing CSR.

When I last played, the screen darkened in that 1/3rd area. I closed everything down and rebooted a few minutes later. The only program I opened was Safari and, within seconds, the screen darkened again. I don't have any idea if the flickering and this darkening I'm experiencing is related, but I have a feeling the problem is going to spread among new iPad users, sorry to say.

I plan on visiting the Apple store next week to look into this more deeply.

Thanks for the reply! I made a test yesterday and found out the flickering starts after playing CSR Racing for a while. I did a reboot and start reading magazines in Zinio for a couple of hours without a single issue, then did some emailing, RSS reading, etc and the flickering was completely gone! I’ll continue testing the iPad’s behavior tonight to see how it goes. I'm thinking it's a sofware related problem 'cause this won't happen while playing Infinity Blade or other graphics intensive apps.

That certainly isn't normal behavior, and nobody here can determine with certainty if it's a hardware or software issue. However, if the problem goes away with a reboot, it would indicate that it might be the software. Maybe a clean install of the iOS with a restore of your backup might help.

But ... If the iPad is that "new", I would contact an Apple Genius at an Apple Store and let them have a look - or take it back to the store where you bought it - and return it for another iPad.

I have the new ipad 3 i had the same problem occurred to me twice after playing the CSR racing game for a while.....reeboting solves the problem. Both the times i played CSR racing for a long time. But to be on a safer side i called up apple support they said Screen should not be flickering and i should restore the ipad to new. If the flickering happens again i should send it in for a repair.

I never experienced such flickering playing other games its only CSR racing. I am not sure if its a hardware or a software issue.

The primary usage of my iPad is to read (magazines, books, rss, etc), emailing, and watch videos, so when the problem started I immediately noticed that the only app I installed recently was the CSR Racing, so now I have uninstalled it and the problem is gone.

I can’t say for sure if it’s solely an app problem because the root of this issue can be traced as further as an A5X defective graphic chip to the Operative System itself. Why I mention the OS? It’s because the screen will continue to flicker even when you’ve closed the game (the app is not longer using the graphic chip). So it seems the OS itself becomes unstable.

Maybe iOS 6 will handle this better. Who knows!

I wish I had known all this before I downloaded that game today. I'm not looking forward to restoring the the iPad to new or having to send it anywhere. I downloaded and was playing CSR for a while today. The screen started flickering after a while. I closed the app and shut all the rest of the apps down. The screen still flickered as I swiped from page to page in the home screen. #scary

I googled the issue and came up with this thread.

I powered the iPad off, waited a few seconds, then powered it back on. No flickering. I'll not be playing CSR Racing on my iPad again. I did like the game untill the conflicts with my iPad began. #toleratenorivalry

I tweeted @CSRRacing and @NMGames about it...hoping that they will examine the issue...since it seems to be clear that the CSR Racing game/app was the catalyst for this event.

My hope is that their software has not permanently affected my hardware.

I'm also waiting to see if the issue resurfaces...I'll be syncing my iPad tonight JIC.

Thank you all for sharing your experiences.

Hello Alex,

I play CSR racing a lot. It went fine for first 2-3 days on my new iPad 3 but then on 4th day after I finished playing and opened twitter the screen started flickering. I reboot the device and everything started working normally. It happened again on the very same day. I thought it was the game. Today when it started flickering again, I closed every opened application manually and locked the screen for 2 minutes. After I unlocked it everything went smoothly. I uninstalled the CSR racing and everything is running fine since last 3 hrs.

I play the CSR on my iPhone4 as well but haven't faced any problem so far.

It's the CSR racing I think.

I hope it helps.

Thanks,

Shaan

Just kill the CSR Racing from running in background after you have finished playing it.

How to kill bacground app?

Double hit home button and you will see the list of recently used apps.

Now tap and hold on any of those apps unitill you see red circle at the top of all icons

Hit that red circle to kill this app from running in background.

This will save a bit of battery life as well.

This helped me to solve flickering iPad display problem after playing this game, I gues it should help most of you as well.

Enjoy the game! 🙂

UPDATE!

I experienced a little flickering and had a darkening of the screen on the right side AND also play CSR Racing. I made an appointment with an Apple Genius yesterday, a really bright and knowledgeable young woman. She was familiar with the flickering but had never seen the screen darkening on one side. She believed it was hardware related and doubted very much if any app could cause it. After backing everything up on iCloud, she restored the original iOS AND flashed the firmware. I had to reinstall everything from scratch since if I used my backup, and the problem occured again, there was no way of proving whether the problem is harware or software related due to corruption. So far the problems have not reoccured. And, I am continuing to play CSR!

This incident is now on record (and I have a copy). Should it happen again, I was told the iPad would be replaced, no problem.

Just thought you guys should know.
