Is your main account an old MobileMe or dot mac account?

Or if not, what is the part after the @ sign?

LostAccount,

Hi, thanks for your continued help. The program is still behaving erratically, but today is working. Horray!

Good that we can eliminate the VPN which I switch off when I am using mail.

There is something wrong with my Onetel (TalkTalk unfortunately) account. I phoned up on Thurday to check the password. All they can do is to change it, so I did. It still did not work. The woman I was speaking to in the Philippines tried to log on to my account. She could not. She said I wiuld get a call from a 2nd level in 24 hours. As you might guess, I did not. I will chase them.

I have looked in the activity window to see a thread, all I see is this sort of stuff . . . .

I dont think I have a large item that has got 'stuck'.

The troublesome account - Onetel is a POP account and I believe for outgoing mail I put mail.onetel.com because this used to work. I know normally it is smtp.orange.fr which I use for Orange which works.

I can synchronise Orange and Gmail. It does not offer me the ability to synchronise Onetel.

Sorry this is long. Can you send private messages on this forum? Regards,........Sirtopher.

Firstly, your fine removing personal information, you should always do that…remaining anonymous is a right as far as I am concerned 🙂

I appreciate the log but I am afraid I can't provide something concrete.

Here is what I would do - READ FIRST please.

1) Wait for their phone call, confirm all the e-mail settings on paper for future reference as per the table on http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1277. Once you have those settings carefully confirm they are correct as per Mail>Preferences>Accounts. This is the most favorable because we know Mail, the application, is not the issue because we've proven that by confirming two other e-mail accounts work without issue.

--- Please use the steps below with caution because I don't want you to lose e-mails. I would rather recommend carefully checking your onetel account settings for incoming, outgoing e-mail servers, the username, the password, ports etc. (step 1)

If you are feeling tenacious you can try the steps below, I tried step 2 and 5 exclusively and there was no issue. Everything came back.

2) Alternatively,

- Quit Mail (important that you quit Mail and wait for it to Quit - small white dot under the Mail icon will disappear to confirm it quits)

- From the Finder's Go menu choose "Go to Folder…" and type ~/Library

- move the following folders to the desktop "Mail" and "Mail Downloads" to the desktop, make sure these folders do not stay in the Library folder

I did all of step 2 on my own mac before recommending this to you and it works fine after putting the .

3) Launch Mail - Mail will appear to have opened for the first time. Your emails are still in the "Mail" and "Mail Downloads" folder but they are not visible to the Mail application because you moved them to the desktop.

4) Add only the onetel email account to the Mail application and test it. Can you send an e-mail to yourself from this newly added account? If In addition have all your emails downloaded?

5) After testing, put things back the way they were.

- Quit Mail

- Move the "Mail" and "Mail Downloads" folder back to ~/Library (replace the Mail folder that wants to get replaced because it was created as a result of adding the account (step 4)

Thanks again for your continued help.

I have printed out the link you gave me. It is very good and helpful. I will be sure to get all the data from Onetel. Unfortunately, that will have to wait till Monday when they start answering the phone again.

If I can get Onetel going with 2nd level that will be great. If not I understand steps 2 to 5 and will try that, thanks for being the tester. I have time machine running so if anything goes wrong I can restore Mail from the Time Capsule.

Thanks again,...........Sirtopher. 🙂

Hi, one thing I should have recommended is to quite simple and effective. It's safe too, it could help you figure things out before you call Apple or onetel.

Create a new user account on your mac and setup the affected e-mail account there.

If it works in that user account, it should tell you that onetel e-mail settings are incorrect in your main user account.

Hope this helps further.

Hi LostAccount,

I am going to give up. I can send and receive emails using Gmail and Orange, and I can recieve emails with Onetel, but I cant send with Onetel. O2 doesent work at all.

I have tried to chase Ontel (TalkTalk) 2nd level support - so far no response. I had a long session with O2 support and he wanted to use Orange for sending O2 emails - O2 sometimes use relay.o2broadband.co.uk (in place of smtp.o2.co.uk). He wanted the Orange version of the relay. Orange could not help.

I expect when I return to UK, O2 will work again because I will be on O2 broadband.

Thanks for all your help. Best wishes,...........Sirtopher.

Hello Sirtopher

I understand your frustration and apologize that you are struggling with an issue that may have some thing to do with the location or with your outgoing e-mail settings.

When you do return to the UK and the issue still appears unresolved you should perhaps contact the respective e-mail providers.

I know you understand that I tried to help, but I just want to politely remind you that I provided as many relevant Apple support articles as I could and hope they prove useful when dialoguing with your ESP(s)

Please don't hesitate to come back to me. At least now, I understand that the issue is with the outgoing e-mail server component.

Thank you for being so cordial.

Bonsoir LostAccount,

You could not have been more helpful. I dont understand how this process works. Can I do anything more to recompense for all your good work?

I have clicked on helpful in many cases, but I can say it is solved yet.

The links you sent to the articles have been very useful. I used them when contacting the ISPs. ➕

I will be back in the UK in September. Late in the month I will have another go with Onetel and O2.

It is remotely possible that Onetel 2nd level will phone me. It it produces any results I will let you know.

Tell me what you need. If I can help I will. Amicalement,...........Sirtopher. 🙂

You have been most gracious in your reply. I am not here for points. I don't really look at them. I enjoy helping other people whenever possible, when I have time. Please don't feel obliged to thank me 🙂

I would certainly not want you to consider this as resolved because it is not. Furthermore, marking an unsolved issue as the opposite will point other users down the wrong path.

Again, you are most welcome to contact me here if needed.

If you do have phone support with AppleCare or your Mac is less than 90 days old, they can help you with e-mail issue over the phone but there is no guarantee they can solve it as some of the components of e-mail are mitigated by the Internet connection, the ESPs equipment and service being fully operational for your e-mail account, the incoming and outgoing e-mail settings being correct (Apple can't verify those, only online using the ESPs own web site perhaps and if documented there), etc, so AppleCare may in some circumstances have to refer folks to the ESP for gathering e-mail settings as a bare minimum with the offer that you call AppleCare so they can guide you on where those settings are entered.

We know your Mail applications work, as testimony to the two unaffected e-mail accounts, also the issue is reproducible on another test user account, we are likely facing incorrect e-mail settings or some other issue due to location, the latter of which is a little strange but there we have it…

Feel free to post back, I will remember you! 🙂

Problem now solved for Onetel. After repeated phone calls to customer support which produced nothing. I sent an email to the CEO Charles Dunstone dunstoc@cpwplc.com I had to repeat the problem again for the nth time, but the man who phoned me in France fixed it in 5 minutes.

The problem was not being able to send emails with Onetel. The solution was -

1. Set the outgoing server to smtp.orange.fr This is my ISP or broadband supplier in France.

2. Use default ports 25, 465, and 587.

3. No authenticaltion, or no password or SSL (secure Socket Layer)

It worked. Horray!

I cant send emails
