MacBook Pro slow shutdown

I've been having slow shut downs on my MacBook Pro for a couple of years now, have just upgraded to the new MacBook Pro with Retina Display and still have slow shut down issues. It's not too major, but can take about 15 seconds to shut down.

Years ago I have a 13 Inch White MacBook and shutdown on that was pretty much instant, a second if that, even after 3 and a half years use and an almost full hard drive. I upgraded in 2010 to a 15 Inch MacBook Pro and thats when it all started, took around 15 seconds to shut down. I always use Migration Assistant when setting up my new Mac's and again did the same a few weeks ago when upgrading to my latest MBPr. My sister has recently had a MacBook Air and this shuts down instantly, so was wondering if there may be something causing my slow shut downs?

It may not be the end of the world but from having pretty much instant shut downs on all my previous Mac's going back 12 years to all of a sudden a couple of years ago having extended shut down times on the latest machine it seems a bit strange. I read somewhere about using Disk Utility to repair permissions which I've done but that hasn't changed anything. Anything else I can try?

I turned off all iCloud sync options. I turned iCloud off completely. Shut down is still 20 secs+. Thanks for something to try.

Just a little more info as far as my MacBook Pro goes.

  • When I "Removed All Web Site" data the first time the shutdown was immediate, but it only worked once. Never again.
  • When I turned off all iCloud sync options the shutdown was immediate, but only one time (and all sync options are still off). Wouldn't work again
  • Just for the heck of it I then "Removed All Web Site" data and shut down was immediate, but just once.

This is a really strange issue.

Thanks for the suggestion and I'll try it, too, when I have a chance. The only thing that I've found that works reliably is clearing the various caches and running the various maintenance scripts. (I used Onyx for that.) I didn't take the time to isolate which one was "fixing" the long shut-down time, but it could well be caused by web cache being shared to iCloud -- bookmarks and such are part of iCloud's sharing feature.
