I created a group - it's now called "untitled group" On My Mac in Address Book - I have tried everything and the Rename Group under Edit is greyed out. I am selecting the untitled group - I even tried it with a named group on iCloud but still greyed out = the entries are there and fine, it's only 51 items, but I can't rename the group at all.

This isn't Lion - it is El Capitan. Apple Support couldn't figure it out either. I finally added names to the "untitled" group and then used the rename group command. what a work-around for a bug.

Take a look in the upper, right corner of the page.
If you have an issue in El Capitan, you should ask in that forum. Even though the app appears the same, it may not work the same from one OS to the others.
I can't remember exactly when, but sometime after Lion, Apple changed the metadata store format in AddressBook, and re-indexing doesn't seem to help as it did before.
This is clearly a bug. I have tried every which way to create a new group and it can't be done. APPLE PLEASE FIX THIS!

Apple isn't going to fix anything in Lion, but then, nothing was broken.
Highlight it and on the menubar, Addressbook > Edit > rename group
I did highlight the name of the group and go to the Edit and Rename Group is greyed out.
In that case it must be a "smart group" rather than group. Right click the smart group and select Edit. The name will be in the dialog where you can change it.
Tried that --- I imported a group, made a Group from Selection [On my Mac] and tried to rename it and still no Rename option -I can create a Vcard and send email but not rename it
I also am having trouble deleting untitled groups that were earlier failures at creating groups===haven't figured out how to delete the bad groups = and I guess until I rename the good one, I don't want to do a deletion
It sounds like your indexes are corrupt. Follow the steps I listed here: After Lion upgrade, my addressbook does not work++
Note that after I posted that, I found that there is an index file (AddressBook-v22.abcddb) in each of the "Sources." So, if you are using iCloud, there will be an index in the subfolder inside Sources. If removing the main one doesn't solve it, try removing the ones inside the Sources subfolders, too.
If that is the problem, then you will be able to edit the name of the group by the methods others have posted.
