iPhoto folders vs albums

Some iPhoto tutorials show how to first create a folders, and then create albums in these folders.

Why do you need folders. Can you simply create albums of photos??

You don't need to create folders. Folders are just a way to group albums and keep the album list in the sidebar a bit shorter.

That is you get this: instead of this:

User uploaded file User uploaded file

It's just an organizational tool. Some use it to duplicate the folder hierachy they used to have on their PCs:

User uploaded file

You're absolutely right. Just needed to work with it some to get clarity. The confusion comes because in file-land everything is file folder structured. There are no albums. In Apple-photos land the same folder structure exists except the images are dumped into albums and then tied to appropriate folders. Once that became clear, it's the same logical structure.

I take that back - sort of. I thought I had it figured out.

I take many pictures when I travel and need to put them in a logical structure when I return.

So for example I often travel to Budapest; there I visit a lot of places.

In iPhoto I created a folder called Places. Now I want a place to put my Budapest pictures by year and under each year I want to put pictures of the museum, the opera house, the gardens etc. etc. I want all these to be logically structured and indented properly.

I can't seem to do it. Can anyone help me here?

Create a Folder called Budapest

Create a folder called 2010, drag it to the Budapest folder

Budapest -> 2010

Create an Album called 'Museum', add the photos you want to it. Drag that to the 2012 folder

So, Budapest -> 2010 -> Museum

Or another way:

Keyword or use the locations feature to identify all the Budapest photos.

Keyword all the Museum photos

Keyword all the Opera House snaps

Then

File -> New Smart Album

Location ->is -> Budapest

Date Range is 2010

Keyword is museum

The best thing about this is a different (and additional) Smart Album without the date range will get all the Museum snaps and you can see how it changes over the years.
