iPhone 4 doesn't ring, only vibrates, but speakers work.

My iPhone 4 (AT&T) suddenly won't ring when someone calls or I get a text, it only vibrates. The speakers play music fine, and I can have phone conversations and hear/speak to the other person fine. Also, the alarm clock sounds The mute switch doesn't seem jammed or anything, but when I switch it off, it doesn't show the picture of the bell with the line through it while vibrating to let me know its off. Also, the volume buttons get no response when pressed. Any ideas?

iPhone 4, iOS 5.1.1

Turn AssistiveTouch on, you should see a white circle on upper left corner, tap it to see a pop up of four icons. Tap the device icon, another screen appears where you seen an bell that you can unmute/mute. That fixes mine every time. Don't know why it mutes itself here even though nowhere else on my phone shows the phone to be on mute!

Hope that helps,

I had this issue as well but I figured out how to fix this issue by just reading previous responds, here's a way how I got mines to work .....

1. Go to Settings > Sounds > Ringer and Alerts

2. Turn off the "Change with Buttons"

3. Lower all the volume

4. After the above has been made ... turn up the volume using the buttons on the side of the phone. [Once doing it, you should start hearing your default ringtone]

5. Once you've started to hear your default ringtone just continue turning up the volume all the way

6. Finally turn on back the "Change with Buttons"

Now you can start hearing your lock sounds, dial-pad tone, etc.

Turned out, this was exactly the issue with my iPhone 4 !! As you say, "...why it mutes itself here ..."? I have no idea either.

I had completely given up on my phone, having replaced the whole speaker unit to no avail! Was going to dump it and get another phone - one that doesn't ring is not a lot of use, is it!

I didn't even know these settings were there! So there's no way I've been in there inadvertently and muted my phone.

Thank you so much for bothering to write up your solution!

I seem to be having this same issue, and sadly none of the above fixes did it. I have sound, I can play the ringtones in settings, it just has to do with incoming text, calls. It also says that the keyboard clicks are turned on and I don't hear them. Does this sound like a hardware issue to you? The apple store is a bit of a drive, do you think it's worth it? This is an older phone that a friend let me have after my phone was stolen. When she stopped using it, all was well with it. Now that I've activated it to me....it doesn't ring and the volume buttons don't do anything even though they are enabled in settings. It's a mystery. Any ideas?

HoustonianK -> excellent job and thanks for posting this.

GF has an iPhone and after an update we got bit by that 'do not disturb' feature (which whoever came up with the idea of labeling that 'feature' with a microscopic, dim, cresent moon should have their legs removed and beaten to death with them). Spent 3 hours waiting for a Genius to tell us the above (even the kid that scheduled the appointment couldn't see the moon). The phone worked for about 2 weeks and now she comes home telling me its broken again... and the moon is not there.

CLEARLY Apple has some broken code here... this is not the way this should operate. It would also be nice if after they find a problem like this they send everyone a text message to let people know if they are having an issue where they can go to find some basic troublshooting steps.. I guess that level of support is gone now.

iPhone 4 doesn't ring, only vibrates, but speakers work.
