'Magic' mouse does not scroll

This so-called 'magic' mouse came with my iMac. It simply does not work; I've followed every piece of advice & guidance - have gone into the settings & ticked all the relevant functions - but the 'scroll' function does not exist. I roll my finger down the mouse, exactly as in the guidance illustrations - and absolutely nothing happens. All this does is bring up a scroll bar on the right-hand side, so I then have to move over & use the scroll bar - something I've not had to do for years with my Windows PC & wireless mouse with a wheel. Is this seriously how this mouse is meant to work? I.e. it simply activates a 1990's style scroll bar?! If so I think this is a bit of a cheek; Macs are not cheap; they could at least have supplied it with a proper functioning mouse. Especially given that it also comes with tiny stunted keypad with some crucial functions missing. I will now have to replace both of these - at additional expense!

If this helps anyone, I was just having a similar problem and found a simple solution that worked like a charm on another board. My issue was that my Magic Mouse used to work just fine. Suddenly, tonight it decided not scroll within windows at all. (So, no scrolling within Finder window, iTunes iPod Manager window, etc.) Yet, it would scroll on Safari web pages like nothing was wrong. I followed another poster's advice from a different board and voila! So, I am hoping that maybe it would help clear up the issue for you as well. *fingers crossed* Here goes:

"Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J. When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Select Preferences/com.apple.driver.AppleHIDMouse.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.

Log out/in and test. If it works okay, delete the plist(s) from the desktop.

If the same, return the .plist(s) to where you got them from, overwriting the newer ones."

(Thanks to Eric Root! magic mouse doesn't scroll in finder windows )
