how can i make a soft return with pages shift enter does not work!

I find that a lot of small changes has happened in Mountain Lion. Makes it confusing and also difficult to give an good answer when not knowing which system Pages is on.

Thanks oldroydc! That worked for me! I was stuck in Evernote on 10.8.4. I couldn't figure out how to get a line break without incrementing to the next number in a numbered list. Control+return did the trick. It should be Shift though. This should be filed as a bug/feature request.

Shift-Enter or Shift-Return didn't insert a soft-break into the cell at the cursor-point with a numbers spreadsheet. I discovered that I needed to go to "Inspector" and then select the "Table" icon (3rd from left at top of inspector). At the bottom of the displayed Inspector's panel there is a tick-box against the text "Return key moves to next cell". This by default on my computer seems to be always selected. Unchecking that tick-box resulted in Shift-Enter placing a soft-break in the text in the selected cell at the cursor-point.

I was referring to Numbers spreadsheet, not pages. Since receiving your question I looked at Pages 09 version 4.3 and shift-enter creates a line-break both on a normal page and in a table-cell. It also works the same in the latest release of Pages v5.0.1.

I think the confusion was mine because I had been reading some discussions about numbers and then later clicked on your contribution to reply without noting that you were referring not to Numbers but to Pages.

In word processing soft returns are inserted automatically by the word processor as part of its word wrap capability. Whenever too little room remains on the current line for the next word, the word processor inserts a soft return. The position of soft returns automatically changes, however, if you change the length of a line by adding or deleting words, or if you change the margins.

A hard return, on the other hand, always stays in the same place unless you explicitly delete it. Whenever you press the Return or Enter key, the word processor inserts a hard return and begins a new paragraph. Pressing shift-enter or shift-return inserts a line-break without beginning a new paragraph.
