Macbook air vs Macbook Pro

I'm an 8th grader who does powerpoints, word documents, web browsing and light gaming, light movie editing, some ichat and some apps. Should I get a macbook air or macbook pro? If i get the macbook air it is no more than 128gb and 8gb of ram. And if I get the macbook pro it will be no more than 500gb and 8 gb of ram. Which one is more suitable for me? I need it to last 4-5 years. Is 128 gb enough?

I have no idea. Seriously. All I know is I like it better then what ever computer I have ever own. Perhaps you are not ready quite yet to graduate to Mac. Hey, take your time. Nothing wrong with what you have. Don't buy one just because all your friends have one. Read some of these threads here, you sound more intelligent then most posting here that are in their twenty's and even thirties'. And that point is, they bought an Apple base on 'hype'. Had no idea what they where buying, they just have to be cool and hip and have the latest gadget. And when they discovered it would not make their breakfast for them or do their laundry they come back on here complaining about stuff that is more user error then anything else, or outright negligence that causes damage.

Other people are wrong. The Pro is not better, at least not in being faster or able to run stuff better. It's better if you want to upgrade later, or if you have limited funds and want a larger HD. But if you get a Pro and an Air with the same specs, the Air is actually the faster and better one.

Look. You are going to be using this computer, not anyone else. You tell everyone who's pushing you to buy one over the other that you have to buy the computer that you will love working on. If you get what they want you to get, you'll be unhappy, and not work well with or on that computer. The computer is your friend, your buddy, your helper, your partner--and you're going to be using it, likely, every day of for the next four to five years! Every. Day. You have to love it. This is why no one else's opinion matters. Just yours. It's not going to be their computer that they're going to be using every day. It's going to be yours.

If you love the Pro, get it. If you love the Air, get it. You can work around any issues (extra storage, for example), but a year from now, you can't--you can't--be working on a computer muttering under your breath, "I hate this thing, I wish I hadn't listened to my friends and family, I wish I'd done what I wanted and gotten the other one...."

If there was that huge a difference between getting the Pro or the Air--if one was a treasure and the other trash, we would most certainly be telling you which was obviously the better laptop and would serve you better. The fact is, there is not that huge a difference. Not enough that you should ignore your gut reaction and desire and get what others want you to get rather than what you want to get. Get the one you want.

Totally agree with this. I got my MBA 2012 and sold my MBP 2010 not because I don't like MBP or MBA is better. Your lifestyle is I think the basis for the right choice. However I did read a lot of comparison reviews and came across a video where MBP and MBA is compared next to each other in opening files and program as well as screen resolution and MBA was faster and has a better resolution. Carrying my MBA felt half of the weight of carrying MBP was lifted. (Literally).

There are some points from the review which helped me decide. What you said about upgrading the MBP in the future appeared in most of the reviews. However in 1-2 years newer computers will be available.

@ Chelseafan456 compare benifits of having SSD vs. HD.

Chelsea, I'm a web developer and I just ordered a 13" Air with 8GB's of memory with 256GB SSD and the i7 processor. To me, the lightness of the Air was more significant than the extra processing power of the MacBook Pro. Plus, the Air will feel faster than the Pro because of the SSD. Go for the Air and get the 8GB's of memory. 4 won't be enough in a couple of years. And it won't be enough now if you want to make movies. I don't need more storage. My old 15" MacBook Pro had a 200GB drive and 150GB was free. I have a 27" iMac for storing photos and videos. Go for the Air and get an external drive for storage.

But if I get an external drive doesn't it defeat the purpose of the Air? In that case it's better for me to get the 11" Air with 256gb and 8gb of ram. And I don't download pictures and videos. I watch and see them online. Family photos or whatever else goes on my old 2001 toshiba. I also don't keep too much Itunes stuff. I listen to music on spotify, and the games I'll be playing will probably be MW3 and FIFA 12 and Fifa 13 when it comes out. I've used 80gb on my HP now but that's also because of Windows crap.

Okay, Chelsea, that's the last time you get to ask the "which is faster?" question 😁 Look. If you've got two computers and you run exactly the same program on both, play the same game, or whatever, and one is twenty minutes slower than the other, then you can say, "That one is too slow, I want the faster one."

But we're talking about processors and such where, if one machine has one such processor and the other the other one, the difference, in most cases, will likely be a few seconds. We're talking about needing a good stopwatch to tell the difference. Especially if all other things (like RAM) are equal. I promise that whatever version of the Air (or Pro) that you get, with whatever processor, it will be screaming fast compared to your old HP. And in most cases, the speed you see will have more to do with SSD (if you get the Air), with those 8gb RAM and, very likely, with the Apple OS (vs. Microsoft) which is so integrated that programs can run very smoothly and you don't have to wait for things like a virus check.

I promise, whichever computer you get, it will be plenty fast. And I promise that if you get the "slower" (cheaper) processor you won't even realize that it's slower. Okay?

Now I understand that this is a big decision. And I know you're worried and nervous and don' t want to make a mistake on this, but you've not only got all the answers you need to make an informed decision, but you, yourself, know what you want. Commit to it, get it, and when it comes, enjoy it! Life's too short to spend it dithering 😉 Go for it. And remember, if you don't like what you get, you can send it back any time before day 14. You're not selling your soul. You're just buying a computer. 😀
