How do you Message to a European iPhone number?

Have a friend in Germany with an iPhone. When I put his phone new in the address field, the send button does not become active.

iPad 2, iOS 5.1.1

Messages is the application that sends both iMessages (which don't use the carrier's SMS system) and regular text messages.


There have been issues with the iMessage/Facetime servers since sometime yesterday afternoon. This could be related.

Go to Settings>Messages>Show Subject Field and make sure it's set to off. That one's probably not the problem but it's worth a shot.


Also, have you ever successfully sent an international text before? Is your account properly provisioned? U.S providers tend to default to restrictions on international dialing to keep people from accidentally running up huge bills.
