Where did RSS go in Safari 6???

Where the heck is the RSS reader!?!?! It was the best all round RSS reader! I DEPEND on it for thousands of feeds that I have to keep track of every day!

AND WHY wasn't there somekind of warning? Or a suggestion for an alternative? Or at least a good extension/option!?

FIX THIS ASAP PLEASE! People like me DEPEND on features like these, you CANNOT just take them away without warning when you force a software update like this!

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.7), 10GB RAM - ATI Radeon HD 5870

Why is it that people who recommend Vienna fail to understand a simple and plain fact that everyone else is complaining about: we don't want a separate RSS reader that interacts with Safari, we want the simple, integrated functionality that Safari had before it was stupidly and arrogantly ripped out by Apple?

Because some of us know how to let go of something and move on? Apple killed off the floppy disk. Apple has been killing off optical disks in new models, now Apple has killed off RSS in Safari and Mail. It's over. They didn't change their minds on the rest, and I doubt they will with this.

But it turned out not to be a bad thing after all. Using a separate RSS reader is like using a separate application for mail and web. This is as simple, if not more so. Now I see I have new posts in my feeds by looking at the menu bar. Cool! Even if I don't have Safari running. Safari didn't do that.

I didn't come here to complain, but to see how others felt. What I found was a very nice RSS reader. Safari was my introduction to RSS. I never tried it any other way. So now Apple forced me to use something better.

ha... just noticed there's an RSS icon at the top of these discussions so you can "follow the feed" of this topic... real funny Apple. 😠

That did not go unnoticed by me either. 😐 Apple had quite a number of RSS feeds that came with Safari.

Things like this always made me think that Mr J was having a bad day and got p!ssed about something. I liked that about him. 😁 That emotion made things happen. Lets hope Mr C carries on in the same insane(ly good) fashion. But sometimes we ended up with this situation. In the end it was always better. Apple does not seem to take breaking things lightly. There's always some reason behind it.

The non floppy drive original iMac created a cottage industry making blue and white USB drives and devices. Even my clothes iron and can opener at the time was blue and white! Apple makes big impacts like that. So what are they trying to introduce us to? They do have a "we know better than you" attitude at times.

It might also have been a last minute technical issue, or preparation for a new widget. I think it's to make 3rd party devs write RSS reads that will interface with the Notification Center. That's my gut feeling, and was the moment Safari told me to look in the App Store.

Still, this annoyed the heck out of me for about an hour. I look for other solutions, like using the Quickstyle extension for Safari to create on the fly CSS settings for sites that Safari 6 sent to Times font h3ll. Annoying, but Safari 6 is fast!

I noticed that the Webkit browser http://webkit.org

packs 10.6, 10.7, and 10.8 versions into one package. When you download it on a 10.8 machine, there's no RSS, the same build on 10.7 or 10.6 shows you RSS. Maybe some enterpising developer could find us a work around?

On a side note. I have unsubscribed to ALL email notifications from discussions.apple.com but i'm STILL getting notification emails. I flipped all those radio buttons to "No" but my in box fills up everytime someone replys to a thread. Could some one help me or direct me to some help, please ?

marcus.sg - That sounds very strange that the same build would show RSS feeds in 10.6 and 10.7 but not in 10.8 :-O

When you read this topic there is a link which says "Stop email notifications" in the top right corner. Did you click it? 🙂 I have to warn you though, they are censuring this thread heavily so if you want to read all posts you have to stay on with the e-mail notifications...

Yep, they can try to cover it up by deleting opinions, but that won't stop me from openly saying no to Apple. I'm tired of them doing away with things I use every day, because I don't fit the 80% demographic. Apple was famously known for 'Think Differently", now it's "think like everyone else" because it generates more money.

I am using RSS feed in Safari on those of my machines which (happily?) can not or will not be upgraded to Lion or Mountain Lion.

RSS feed support is much more natural (does this ring a bell to Apple users ?) as feeds refer usually to Web pages. Using an other application or even some Notification center does complicate things.

BTW the 80-20% rule is probably the most stupid argument to be used here. Applied litterally, Apple (computers) should close as it does not represent (or at least not always has represented) a 20% share of the market.

Many times in the past has Apple take steps back to restore functionnalities to their products. Hope this will be the case also for RSS feeds in Safari (and why not a return of the Websharing preference at the same time !)

I've read a heap of stuff on this topic and the only plausible explanation for the removal is that the reader does strip out ads and therefore hinders the Great Ponzi Scheme that would have us all spend until we drop. Somewhere it was recommended that I switch to Vienna but my Mac refuses to install Vienna because my security preferences only allow the installation of downloads from the Mac store and from approved developers. The security preferences are set by the operating system and cannot be altered. There seems to be no doubt that Apple has agreed to make it harder for its customers to avoid advertising. Is the blocking of software at the whim of Apple constitute unreasonable use of its power? I would have thought so, and I would think that a challenge to this abuse of power would have to succeed. On that basis it's the government we should be lobbying, not Apple. Does anyone have any suggestions as to alternatives to Vienna? I suppose as soon as someone comes up with one it, too, will be blocked.

Just to reiterate:

It used to be that creativity came before money at Apple... Create “Insanely Great” products and the money will follow (and justify). for the past few years though, Apple seems to have become a greedy money grubbing corporation like any of the worst of them (like they really need more?).

I've been a dedicated Apple user since the early 90's without flintching... now I'm losing my appetite and am revolted by the thought of what these new directions mean for "The Most Valuable Company on the Planet."

The Bozos are in change again... but this time there will be no Jobs to the rescue.

What ads? None of the websites I use RSS for have ads. And RSS reads like Vienna show you the actual website the RSS feed is from, so there are the ads. I use an ad blocker anyway.

Don't forget to tweet that using your advanced operating system with new Share button. 😐

I don't use Twitter. But the rest of the OS is much better than Snowleopard or Lion. It's faster for one thing.

And there's nothing wrong with the share button. I often used the email the page feature in the past, and now it's in the share button. I might actualy use it for Facebook too.

One small change, i.e., having to use another RSS reader, doesn't take away everything else I do on my Mac. In fact it's just a miniscule part. And nothing has really changed. I still see the feeds I want when I'm taking time to read stuff on line.

Change happens. You can resist it and get frustrated, or figure out a way to use it. Maybe Apple will bring RSS feeds back. Maybe they wont. At this point it doesn't matter to me because I can still view my feeds.

The rest of the stuff I do, which is work related, and even fun related, works better on Mountain Lion. Just having Safari render pages this fast is reason enough for the upgrade IMO.

Where did RSS go in Safari 6???
