Notes wont sync between Iphone and Mac on Mountain Lion

Anyone with a dev seed know if the 10.8.2 update fixes the Notes IMAP problem. I didn't see it in the list of fixes.

Notes worked for me before 10.8.2 two exchange accounts,

now ... craps out from the start with this level error.. that isn't resolved deleting and readding your account.

Mountain Lion has cool stuff.. but it is pile of (#&(*# when it comes to exchange synchronization. with exchange sync.. you don't need the iCloud.

Still not working after 10.8.2 using IMAP account with path prefix...

Agree - 10.8.2 does not fix notes syncing between iphone accoutn and icloud account.

Come on Apple, fix this...

I finally was able to find a way to copy my "on my iphone" notes perfectly onto my "icloud" notes using gmail.

so you'll need a gmail account. But it is simple, works and quite fast

With help from sildani and his suggestions, I was able to locate my notes.mbox file (~/Library/Mail/V2/Mailboxes/Notes.mbox).

To make sure I had everything off my phone, I used another computer running snow leopard to sync my newest notes off my phone with Mail, then extract the up2date notes.mbox folder.

However, I wasn't able to just drop the notes.mbox into notes as sildani suggests, that doesnt work (not for me anyway). What i did was import it into the native Mail app on my macbook pro (runing mountain lion). They all appear. Then, I created a new folder in Gmail and transfered them all into that folder on my Gmail (i have Gmail IMAPed to my Mail app). Once the transfer complete, I went onto gmail.com to access my email on the web. The "notes" folder in gmail is hidden on the Mail app, so you have to go on the browser to transfer them into your Gmail notes folder. transfer them

OK, so now they are all there. You can now go into settings/mail,contacts&calendars, select your gmail and choose to sync notes. Once you do, all the notes will appear in the notes app, with the proper dates and everything.

Finally, just select them all, and drag them into your iCloud notes. VOILA!!!

you can then delete them off your gmail and unsync if you like. Also, once they all get in sync with your phone, you can individually delete all of them off your "on my iphone" (NOT OFF iCLOUD!!) and then in settings/notes on your phone, set default acount to iCloud

Just tested the IMAP prefix problem with 10.8.2 this morning ... No change !!

Thank you all for the feedback, I now know that it is not my fault the IMAP "INBOX" prefix does not help.

Luckily, I have control over the IMAP server (cyrus, in this case). Even if you don't, you may ask your admin to follow the recipe below. Now I have both Mail using the "normal" (INBOX.MyFolders) hierarchy, with Notes.app still able to read the notes in INBOX.Notes, thanks to cyrus' "altnamespace" option.

On your mail server, do the following:

1. In /etc/cyrus.conf, add the following line in the "SERVICES {" section (I added it between the "imap" and "imaps" lines, but the order does not matter)
   # Hack for Apple Notes.app: Provide alternate namespace on port 144
   imapalternate cmd="imapd -U 30 -C /etc/imapd-altnamespace.conf" listen="144" prefork=0 maxchild=100
2. Create a copy of /etc/imapd.conf and call it /etc/imapd-altnamespace.conf; in the copy, change "altnamespace: no" to "altnamespace: yes" (or add "altnamespace: yes" to the new file, if there is no altnamespace option in the original file)
   [As I do want to reapply this change automatically after every change to imapd.conf, I created the following shell script ("imapd2alternate.sh") to do this for me:

   sed 's/^altnamespace: *no.*/altnamespace: yes/' < imapd.conf > imapd-altnamespace.conf
   diff imapd.conf imapd-altnamespace.conf
   ]
3. Restart your cyrus processes; on Ubuntu Linux, this is done using "service cyrus-imapd restart", on other operating systems, this will vary
4. If necessary, make sure, port 144 is not in use by anything else and your firewall (if any) allows access to it

That's it for the server. Now, it provides the following

• On port 143 (standard IMAP port), it has the folders as
  • INBOX
  • INBOX.Deleted Messages
  • INBOX.My Folder
  • INBOX.Notes
  • …
• On port 144 (our new port), it shows the same information with different names:
  • INBOX
  • Deleted Messages (note the lack of the "INBOX." prefix here and below!)
  • My Folder
  • Notes
  • …

The latter is what Notes.app requires, as it ignores any configuration information trying to educate Notes.app.

On your Mountain Lion (10.8.2), go to System Preferences->Mail, Contacts & Calendars and create a new Mail account bound to port 144, enabled for Notes only. Unfortunately, Apple tries to be helpful and prevents you from having the same username on the same server twice, so this requires quite some ugly trickery.

So if you do not need Mail.app to continue having the INBOX prefix, the easiest is to change the port number of the existing account to 144 (keep the "SSL" option ticked) and just enable the use of this account in Notes.

Otherwise, make sure, the same mail server is reachable under a different alias and use that to create another mail account for port 144, the disable its use for Mail and enable its use for Notes.

That worked. I had to cut and paste old notes. Luckily didn't have a boatload.

Same here. If there wouldn't be the option to configure the imap path prefix and it wouldn't work in iOS one could get the impression that Apple wants to force people to use iCloud. Come on Apple, this should be trivial to fix.

(And no, switching to iCloud or using a different IMAP server or configuring my IMAP server differently is not possible in my case.)

i wass having the same problem after upgrading to iOS 6 and ML, since i used "On My Mac(devices)" notes and synced them by iTunes before upgrading, then I was stuck with each device having their own version of notes, ntes disappeared from my Mac all together.

Having search through internet, I figured there is no easy way to get them back my cloud accounts, be it google or iCloud. So I just found another computer with Lion, in my case, I didn't have another computer so I just installed parallel demo, and install Lion on it, then just sync my iPhone's Notes with the newly installed OS, and finally dragged all the "On My Mac" notes to iCloud by using Mail.app. I think this is the easiest way, especially if you have access to another Mac with Lion or Snow Leopard, all you need is create another account and use it to sync Notes once.

Tested again after the "10.8.2 additionnal update" --> No change 👿

Yep. This has got to be the most frustrating thing that has marred an otherwise fantastic experience. I converted over from windows about a month ago and I think my MBA is the best computer I've ever messed with but this notes/mail icloud thing has really been bugging me. It works on my ipad and iphone but I can't add an icloud email address to the mail app and notes cannot be enabled. When I go to the console I get "10/11/12 11:21:14.155 AM com.apple.NotesMigratorService[306]: Could not find or create an iCloud accout'

This is very frustrating indeed.

This is the type of "crappy monopolistic behavior" that will probably make me stop buying Apple products very soon.

Apple introduced iCloud and now is forcing everyone to use it to sync stuff like notes. Was that easy to allow iTunes to do it as well like in the past? Seriously?

Note to guys at Apple: With all the respect (because most of you are just making what have been told to) go f**** yourselfs over.

By a lot of reasons starting with privacy and ending in coporate/government policies it's actually impossible for professional user to use your **** s*** cloud services.

I bet with all of you guys that Apple won't fix this IMAP issue. And yes I tried to set the inbox path and it's still not working... but on my iPhone (iOS 5) it is working and correctly sending the notes to the server...
